  1. I posted this in the "what are you eating?" thread. Double Gloucester cheese -- a mixture of two English cheeses, Stilton (white/blue) and Huntsman. It's delicious. I'm no food connoisseur, but I've been exploring different types of cheeses, because I kind of live next to a health/whole foods mart. What are head-case's favorite cheeses? I could make a head-case cheese platter if I get enough good suggestions.
  2. Double Gloucester: Big, juicy, very green grapes:
  3. Frederic Rzewski - The People United Will Never Be Defeated! Holy crap. For 2 reasons: (1) Amazing set of piano variations, everyone needs this. (2) This particular pressing is apparently worth $100, and I bought it for $5. Holy crap. One of the most beautiful albums I've yet heard. Many Coltrane fans don't dig it, but I find the pairing brilliant. Hartman's unique, soothing crooner vocals were recorded excellently... the decay, urgh. Sure, Coltrane is quite restrained, but it's not like he's going to go all "Giant Steps" on our asses... that'd ruin the synergy. Lots of pairings like this just don't "gel" -- like Ellington & Trane -- but John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman is an exception. (edit: sorry of the rather vague/incoherent description. tired from finals etc.) Don't tell anyone I bought it, though. This is the kind of thing other kids would literally beat me up for listening to.
  4. AT least 50 people in Kottayam district in India have reportedly lost their vision after gazing at the sun looking for an image of Virgin Mary. http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,23353498-5012895,00.html
  5. i dunno, internet adds decimals. isn't everyone a tad more pompous in cyberspace? it's like that xkcd comic. someone is wrong on the internet.
  6. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article3964693.ece Neat. It'll be just like that one Batman Beyond episode. What kind of hybrid would you want to be? I'd kill to be able to squirt blood from my eyes like that one lizard.
  7. You're overanalyzing my aimless internet rants and making some big assumptions based on my e-persona, grawk. I consider myself bored and half-arrogant, but not spoiled. I lol'd. I need to go catch up on Dinosaur Comics.
  8. FTW!!!! One of the worst chatspeak phrases ever. Whenever one of you uses it, I imagine some skinny, pale, nerdy guy with a ginger goatee letting out a high-pitched chortle as he types it, then snorting. *chortle* NES FTW!!!!!! *snort*
  9. Louisville is a cultural wasteland, but there's some good food here. Impellizeri's pizza. 1) My father was the dude's first customer. 2) Great variety of toppings. 3) Greasy, but not too greasy. 4) 6 plasma TVs. 5) They offer a 12-pound superpizza. 6) SO TASTY. 7) Friendly workers. Decent music selection. "Child In Time" can be heard often. India Palace. 1) Indian food is tasty and healthy. 2) They actually have curry that's hot enough for me. 3) Endearing typos in the menu. 4) Beautiful Indian waitresses. 5) 5 minute walk! 6) Ali Akbar Khan! Graeter's. Anyone in the Cincinnati area should have this, too. Premium ice cream, awesome chocolate malts. Qdoba. If I'm going to have fast food, I might as well get a gigantic burrito. Bombay Grill. I think this is the only south Indian restaurant in the city, and the food is to die for. Shalimar, Tumbleweed, Cheesecake Factory, Bourbon Barrel, blagh blagh. I go on long bike rides, so I know a lot of places.
  10. sansa clip -> er4p squeezebox 3 -> marantz 2270b -> boston acoustics cr75s I think I qualify. I think that considering having "only" 3 rigs "minimal" is a bit... huh? The budget speaker rig sounds more than good enough for me with everything from Brahms to Autopsy. I sort of want a giant subwoofer, though. edit: maybe i actually qualify for team "barely qualifies as an audiophile"
  11. i'm the same way. i only watch documentaries, too.
  12. I tried to read The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in 5th grade because I liked Dynasty Warriors.
  13. I'm going to work my way up the Dostoevsky ladder before attempting to read the big books again. I consider myself well-read but they're a bit much for me at the moment. For really long novels, it's especially helpful to keep a reading journal.
  14. I haven't finished a book in a while. This summer I'm going to read every Hesse novel. And get started on more Nabokov than Lolita, Pale Fire and Invitation to a Beheading. And probably re-read Pale Fire. Sorry for the late reply, but yes. I saw the film version first, however.
  15. Normally when I really get into a book I'll finish it in a few days. I haven't finished a book for a long time now... too busy with instruments/listening to music/schoolwork/blagh blagh.
  16. http://www.terrascope.co.uk/Terrastock7/Terrastock7_performers.htm I don't know many of the bands, but it's the only big festival that has been held here for many centuries, so I might as well go. Anyone going to make the trek down here? I know Beeble is.
  17. Great haul from the bookstore. Highlights are Death in Venice and a bunch of Borges. Andrew Hurley is a horrible translator. I have been comparing these James E. Irby and Norman Thomas di Giovanni translations of Borges to the Hurley ones I had before and the difference in serenity of language is astounding. Like, Harry Potter vs. The Great Gatsby.
  18. Sounds like The Residents, Charles Ives, Mr. Bungle, Roy Rogers, too. It's my ringtone now.
