As Kevin knows, I'm in for the full on crazyness.
I'm always partial to RCA inputs over XLR's and Vampire would make the most sense here. Not to expensive and very well made which is probably why everybody is using them these days.
Attenuator, probably the 3"x3", 60 step, Shallco monster.
It would be fun to compare but the older BH has more then an even chance of coming out on top in this comparison. A more thermally stable PSU and the older output stage CCS might have an performance edge. We'll see when I'll compare the BHSE, Kerry's version of the same design and the SOTA Blue Hawaii's I'm working on.
No 720p for me, I only have 80gb worth of bandwidth each month and it simply isn't enough for a full diet of HD.
Just finished watching Modern Marvels - Bread for the forth time probably.
First exposure was when I was about 12 to some Quad ESL's and the first ESP I ever tried was a Koss ESP9 which barely worked. The SR-007 was the first ESP I bought and a great leap into the unknown. Driven by a SRM-313 it had potential but I knew there was something missing so I ordered a BH from Justin. The whole madness of collecting hundreds of headphones came later...
It's a train wreck in most books. The SQ aside the build quality is a joke.
I got the price quote here so it could be cheaper in the US. The HE60 parts aren't all that expensive though, perhaps I should ask (bully) the distributor here into ordering all the parts needed to assemble a complete headphone...?
Less then that direct from Japan but not cheap at all. Since you don't need the Stax connector you could just get a SRE-750 and cut half off it and sell the end with the Stax plug and the Stax socket as well.
Sennheiser will sell you a new cable but it is far from cheap last I heard.
Indeed. I couldn't be happier with my KGSS and use it almost exclusively while being surrounded by some of the best amps there are. Tubes are nice but give me a good SS amp any day...
Waterfall plot, FR graph, distortion, sensitivity etc. They did test an old set so they aren't ideal but a 0.1% THD shows they did something right in 1957...
Well Stax are still shipping the "broken" SR-007Mk2/A...
11K for the basic version would be about right but I factored in all the fees etc. The 2508 is about 14K at the store all in.
This might belong in the Stax thread, but did you catch the newest issue of Hi-fi news? They are doing some tests on a Quad ESL as a part of their vintage roundup...
That's a strange design choice for sure since this line of TKD's are made for the Japanese broadcasting industry. A spring leaf would certainly work and it would be easy enough to fit it to the L-bracket holding the attenuator in place.
I would use the DACT if I could stand steppers but sadly I can't. I've even gone so far as to custom order a production run of 4-gang 50k pots (should get the first sample soon) and scoured the earth looking for more alternatives. Now if I could fit a 4-gang, 64 step Shallco in the T2 then I might stop looking for pots...
As for the price, a DACT should cost about the same as the TKD. I'm paying roughly 20KYen for a 4CP-2508 and a 4 gang DACT is 230$ from Justin.
Stax SRE-725 would be your best bet but it is quite a bit heavier then the stock Senn cable and you would have to find a good way to secure the cable which isn't going to be easy. The HE60 drivers are very fragile and will not survive much mechanical abuse.
