  1. My sainted mother turns 78 tomorrow. I spent an hour today on the phone guiding her through the process of updating the firmware on her her AirPort (one I bought from HC's own Salty IIRC.) After a repeated error message, having her reboot the AirPort three times and her cable modem twice, we were successful. The updated decided it was automagically applied after appearing to fail repeatedly. Apple discontinued the AirPort a number of years ago at this point and didn't make a replacement. I don't know what I'm going to do when it's time for a replacement. I really appreciate the UI and bulletproof nature of the AirPorts.
  2. RIP Daniel Johnston. https://www.austinchronicle.com/daily/music/2019-09-11/austin-songwriting-genius-daniel-johnston-dead-at-58/

  7. Woke up to burst pipes (again) and a flooded basement (again). This time the water got into the wiring. The good news is I'm not dead and the house didn't burn down. The bad news is more or less everything else. I've already shop vacced up maybe 100 gallons. There's parts of the basement I can't easily get to (FML) and two outlets are dead. One is a ground fault and it won't reset its breaker. My first reaction is DON'T FUCK WITH IT. Luckily I ran a lighting business for 15 years and I have some big, fuck-off extension cords. I'm running on fumes right now, but I've got more work to do this evening. Did I say FML? FMMFL.

  9. Is this thread indexable by the goog? I've got some shit I want to say, but it's a bit too personal to have out in the open. Oh well, this has been a zero content post brought to you by Knuckledragger, LLC and Primate Lighting Industries. Stay tuned for our weekly broadcast!
  10. Phew. Just did the biggest rsync of my life: sent 5660.55G bytes received 14.84M bytes 36.49M bytes/sec total size is 6496.07G speedup is 1.15 That's not all of it, I had to restart after the first TB because I'm an idiot. Now of course I need to prune and do it again. O_o

  15. This painting "The Masterpiece" went viral recently: Of course there have been a number of 'shops: If you don't get the reference on this one, well... (A print of this painting was in one of Jeffrey Epstein's houses.) My own humble contribution:
  16. $600,000+ system. I maintain that the bigger Wilson speakers look as if they are quite irritated with the listener.
  17. I'm not sure about the choice of finish color, but I do appreciate the extra woofer.
  18. If one is under 30 and has an education that will actually lead to gainful employment, then one also has (A) student loans the size of Turkmenistan's GDP, (B) intellectual gifts earning a giant scholarship, or (C) rich AF parents. This is to say nothing of the cost of housing, transportation (the nest major economic bubble/bust is auto loans, you can quote me on this), energy, etc. As for an economic recession, Ol' Cheeto Dust is getting that warmed up as we speak. The Fed just lowered interest rates while the economy is still "booming" (generally the opposite of that is the rule) and the FDIC voted to ease regulations (also know as protections) put in place post-2008. The excrement is going to hit the ventilator, the only question is at what speed are the blades turning. Also, to be clear, I'm a Gen Xer. I expect the world to burn, and it has yet to disappoint me. ...and now some pictures: Abandoned motel in Arizona. Painted Hills, Oregon. Tuscany hills, Italy.
