  2. Yeah, but he'd probably literally punch me and declare victory. \
  3. Weakling, I find punching down patch panels and making patch cords to be incredibly easy work, just boring. Replacing or installing a jack in some awkward spot under a desk, now that sucks.
  4. Damn, I was gonna point out about using oil for PC cooling too.
  5. Ok, for removing the other type of PCB where the two solder posts are further apart, all that needs to be done is use some desoldering braid on each one, then lift it out by tilting up the side further from the driver and pulling it out at an angle like that. If you try to lift it straight up, there's a very good chance of severing one of the voice coil wires, which I discovered the hard way while experimenting with different ways of removing it. The desoldering braid works very well with this, because the side of the PCB isn't plated, just the face of it. Depending on circumstances and your technique, you may end up with a very tiny bit of solder keeping the PCB attached to the post, which can usually be dealt with by gently tilting the PCB up and down (in the same manner as if you were tilting it to remove it), and it should break loose with little effort. Do not use any significant force trying to get it loose, because it's very likely you'll end up jerking it up once it comes loose and ripping the voice coil wires off. Reassembly is a little trickier because you have to put it back in with the same angled method (while getting the wire to stay put in that channel underneath the PCB), but with a little patience it isn't too bad.

  7. Ok, so I'm working on the guide revisions for the other style PCB, and I've gone ahead and done some testing comparing the different PCBs and drivers. Both types of PCBs seem to have the same effect on the sound (surprising for AKG), which is not a notch filter or anything like that, but reduces the upper midrange and treble output by about 3-4dB. The drivers themselves do measure and sound different (the older one is better kthxbai), but not the PCBs, which I can't really see a good reason to remove them unless you're wanting more treble out of the K1000.
  8. A bunch of proprietary Tektronix transistors and IC, yay.
  9. Thanks for the heads up. I posted in the thread only to realize afterwards Tyll had already sent me a PM on HF about it this morning. Looks like we shouldn't have any problem getting good gear there.

    SHM-CD

SHM-CD just uses a different/better plastic for the disc, the encoding is exactly the same as a regular redbook CD.

  12. Holy crap Marc, I never knew Newark wasted so much material for packing... and here I thought Digikey went overboard sometimes with that paper mesh stuff.
  13. Yeah, just the original 13 episode series. There's a playstation game and a short manga in one of the artbooks, but no other episodes.
  14. Serial Experiments: Lain R2 DVD boxset, because just having three Lain boxsets isn't enough. Also bought some books from the same guy for $4 to try to help improve my vocabulary and literacy...

Heh, is that Len Kagamine opening the door in the first video?
  17. Not bought yet, but one of the R2 DVD boxsets for Lain popped up on regular old ebay tonight, which I'm pretty much guaranteed to win for a good price to add to the Lain collection.
  18. Seven is the point at which one finally realizes the situation and says why the fuck do I have seven DACs I gotta get rid of some of this crap...
  19. What about the brown ones?

    That's just so wrong.
  23. My pair the guide is based on is serial #03796. A 2nd pair I just bought is serial #10585, so hopefully when I get it it turns out to have this other PCB so I can revise the guide to account for both. If it has a significant amount of glue I'll see if I can update the guide for more detail on that as well, or perhaps make a section for full grille reassembly regardless... The fine wire on your pair Duggeh is the voice coil wires. The posts are looping back up to the front instead of to the back like on mine, and there are two fine copper wires twisted in with that white bit (string?), which is likely used to give the wires some amount of reenforcement to protect from damage.
