King size Tempur-Pedic bed. I was told it needs 40 to 50 days to break in.
It depends on what method you are using to break it in.

That seems a very reasonable repair bill, especially for a statement product. Sony could learn a thing or two from AT there
It's been my experience that Sony doesn't seem to be able to learn anything about customer service.

My geography is generally pretty good. My weaknesses are Africa and the asian former soviet republics. The map in this test is very difficult for small countries and worthless for islands, where all you see is the flag. I took the test 3 times and got:
60% (too many African countries)
90%
90%

What is a "tinker's cuss" anyway?
It's when a tinker says "damn".

Transformer coupled 300b's at a sane price are something to look into.
Have you looked at the Bottlehead kits? You would seem to be the kind of customer they are trying to address. You have the skill to build/modify them.

What other dynamics are you refering to?
I really like the ed9's but I would like to try to hear the great contenders (but I guess most of them are no longer being made..?) so that I have a clear view on what's out there in that pricerange and how they stack up against the ed9.
When spending that much money on headphones, which I'm definitely gonna do, I'm not buying blind or based on someone else's opinion.
In the end it's also a matter of taste and i dislike the hd600/650 so far from what've heard. I kinda lost what I wanted to say...I'm tired...thanx for your input though
If you like them better than anything else you've heard and want them, by all means you should get them. Who cares what anybody else says. The idea is to please yourself, not others. Enjoy them!

One of these filled with vinyl for the Bay Area:
Hey Mike, don't you really mean "from the Bay Area"? Or are you starting to export vinyl from Florida to there?

Someone needs to tell me what these miracle amps are, I've yet to hear the K701 sound decent on anything I've heard to date.
As I said in an earlier post in this thread, Voltron's SDS-XLR qualifies. The K701 was recabled and balanced though, so maybe that's not fair.

It couldn't possibly be a matter of people's brains getting used to a new sound.
No-sir-bob. That's just crazy talk.
Heresy! Heresy! Get the stake and wood. Hmm, that would make an interesting emoticon too.
-
Btw. I don't hate Rudi but he's incompetent and the crap he's selling should be illegal.
Then why are you going to build one of his amps? Or did someone else design it?

Hyperbole? Guilty, but I needed a way to express just how much better the Qualia is in that particular aspect of sound than just about anything else, IME.
I'm curious about your comment about "headstage". I take it as the ability for a headphone to place instruments in a discrete location is space. The space in which those instruments can appear is the "headstage". However, the nature of headphones can sometimes cause discontinuities in the space (the "blob" effect, with concentration of sound at the ears and in the exact center of the head), which is why some people use crossfeed. I've never had issues with the "blob" effect on most high-end gear, which is why I tend to think of the need for crossfeed as a symptom of something else in the system that needs to be fixed.
Biggest "headspace" of any headphone: K-1000, followed by HE90 and Qualia 010. Most precise placement of instruments in that space of any headphone: Qualia 010, followed by HE90 and R10.
I took "headspace" to mean that with headphones, unlike live performances and speakers, the soundstage goes from left through your head to right, assuming no blobs. To me, it's almost as if I'm laying just in front of the music group. The sound is left to right and mostly eye (or ear) level and above. With speakers, the sound is left to right and out in front of you, like a live performance.
I do agree with your description that good imaging headphones produce a continuous music stage left to right without any blobs and that too many headphones have blobs.

I never noticed any burn-in with my stock 701's. They sounded shrill to these (at the time) 49 year-old ears, which is scary. They never lost that "edge" after some long burn-in sessions and a lot of painful listening sessions. I almost gave up on them until I read some threads on recabled 701's so I gave it a try and they are now my second favorite phone. They sounded immediately better in the top-end and also in the bottom end. They haven't changed much to these ears and I am sure (but I'm not anal enough to really keep track) they have 500+ hours since the recable, So I am as bemused as the rest of you by the burn-in bandwagon with the 701's. I have experienced burn-in (or acclimation or a combination thereof) with both of my recabled AKG K340's so I am not burn-in "non-believer".
Welcome to HeadCase. Sorry about your thin skin.
Burn-in is the fotm (or maybe "all time") magic elixir at HF. It fixes all problems.
Interesting, 701s have never sound strident to me. In fact it's always been the opposite. They sounded too bland. That was until I heard them out of Voltron's SDS-XLR where they came alive. So I think that amplification is very important to get good sound out of a 701.

I've come to appreciate Jude's policy. I see it's in HC's best interest.

Yeah... I need to grab some microfiber cloth apparently.
Costco sells a bag of 10 (I think) for under $10 in the automotive section.

After reading this thread so far, a couple of you guys (recstar and smeggy) are scaring me just slightly more than a little.
The only time I really liked the HP2s were with Frank Cooter's set up at MOA, and with Johnny Number's HD2, even though I've always appreciated them. I've really liked the L3000 every time I've heard them, even when I was in a bratty, pouty mood at a mini-meet. After announcing to everyone that all their new gear sucked and meaning it (Transporter, Woo5, GS1000s, D5000s), I sat curled up on a sofa and listened to a baseball game and bad Creole music on a Clix2 radio, unamped, and was perfectly happy. Yep, they're that good.
Oh, I've never heard them with the Zana.
They don't sound too bad with a Platinum Extreme either.

You might want to ask the question at audioasylum. You'll get lots of good responses there.

Me too.

OK, who is it? Gotta read the profile fast before it is gone...
Hopefully it's nobody on this site. It's one thing to call oicdn on his douchebaggery when he does it, but an attack like this out of the blue just fosters sympathy for him and actually supports his position. So if it is somebody on this site, please stop doing things like this. If you must rag on him, just wait for him to post and eventually he'll do something that you can call him on.

the "american" in american indian refers to the american continent, not the united states of america.
Definitely. It would have been "amurican indian" if it just refered to the USA.

I wouldn't have a problem if he were offering the mods based on what he posted in previous threads - in which case it would just be a somewhat expensive but totally legit service fee - but what stinks is that the current version is supposed to be incrementally better than previous ones, and, of course, with that info not being available to the public. That's like giving out shareware.
I see he now has MOT status there. Doesn't that mean no more reviews and no more adding to his "markl mods" thread?
-
Anyone can do those mods - at least the ones he posted the instructions for.
I don't get how people could be queuing up to get Mark to mod their D5000 when he went to such painstaking lengths, posting pictures and directions on exactly how to do it such that even a monkey like me could follow them.
We need sheep and/or lemming emoticons.
