Mac Mini as Music Server
The Mini with Amarra has been the 100% source in my system since I bought it. I think I need to play some vinyl/SACD today just to get the exercise. Controlling thousands of songs using my Touch as a remote is just too easy.

Amarra "Mini" -- $395
For those of you waiting for Version 1.1. It has been released and seems to be playing ALAC just fine in my system. Also added digital volume controls to the Mini. Amarra Computer Music Player

I know the answer to all of your problems. Fly First Class. No baggage fees, free food/alcohol and plenty of room in the overhead compartment. Simple.

Sonic Studio 302 (aka Metric Halo ULN-2)
John, if I want to connect my phono preamp (Manley Steelhead) to this to digitize for needle drops, I do not need the RIAA curves, etc. correct. I assume I can just run custom cables from the Manley to the ULN-2 then via firewire into the Mini. Am I oversimplifying this?

Post the last thing you bought!
I don't have any of these funny plugs on any of my cables so no opinion yet.

I bought my Metric Halo less than two months after buying the 64Gb Touch. Coincidence?

The Jerry Douglas stuff is good. Audio quality varies a bit from song to song but the best songs sound fantastic. Hot Club of 52nd Street is a great live recording with excellent musicians but it is recorded at a low level so I have to adjust volume whenever one of these songs comes up in the shuffle. Nancy Bryan is one I already had on vinyl and is a nice album. The music comes in second to the voice on this one but it is entertaining. The Arnold Overtures is great. Honestly not a huge difference between this Hi-Res and my Tape Project RTR tapes. 52nd Street Blues Project - Blues and Grass is decent Blues but nothing special. The pipe organ stuff is cool but not something I want to listen to all that often. The Nick Drake cover album is great music with varying singers. Some really good covers and some so-so. I like the Billy Burnette. Rock-a-billy Hi-Res. Not much of a voice but interesting songs. The World's Greatest Audiophile Voices is as expected and sound fantastic. The Chesky Area 31 has some excellent music and top notch recording. The Best of New York Sessions is excellent but also recorded at a very low volume. The Smithereens sing Tommy is cool for a couple of listens but nothing special. The Monty Alexander Nat King Cole album is not bad. Great sound and music. Some of the covers are kind of odd though. The Kinks albums are good but nothing overtly Hi-Res about them. The Valerie Joyce is my least favorite. Very weird covers and her voice bugs me.

Ari, I will have a room at the meet hotel you are welcome to stay in. My flight gets in at 6:55 Friday night so I might have to skip dinner and go straight to the bar.

SoFla Winter Meet 12/5/09
It would appear that things will come together so I can make it down for my first Florida meet. Now I need to find out if there are any rooms left at the discount rate.

When running on my 2GB Macbook Pro I did have some sound quality issues that I determined were either caused by lack of RAM or too much heat.

New stuff always sounds better. I am really digging this Mac Mini set up. So easy and fantastic sound. After using my big screen to set up the Mini I am thinking about getting another to use in the living room as a computer/netflix streamer.

Yeah that is what they told me at the store. I got it all set up successfully and I am am listening now. Firewire into the Weiss on one Preamp input and out of the Weiss via AES/EBU into the PerfectWave DAC on another input. A lot of crap to listen to iTunes I guess.

I just use the iMac for a computer in the guest bed room and it hardly gets used as the Mac Pro will handle all my desktop needs. It typically just plays movies for people staying there since I do not have cable/TV in that room. I think mom will get a lot more use out of this than me.

Mac Mini as Music Server
Sorry to disappoint you guys but the iMac is a gift for my mom who I have finally convinced to move over from the dark side after her Dell desktop died in an electrical storm. I already have a Mac Pro and an older iMac so I am not really in the market for anything but the mini for my music server and magic meeses for everything.

They found me a 2.53/320/4GB Mac Mini also so I have tons of new toys to play with tonight.

At the apple store playing with the new 27" iMac. Fantastic machine. They let me hook up some Sony video camera via firewire and process some video in Final Cut Pro and the thing flew. No Magic Meeses but I did get my loaded iMac.

$200 dollars cheaper at B&H

If B&H ever gets the Metric Halo back in stock I am going to have to try it. Is set up a difficult task?

Should really get an 8 Core Mac Pro with 32 Gb of ram to be safe.

Mac Mini as Music Server
Well I couldn't convince the Geniuses to sell me a Mini yet. They are all behind the black curtain. They wouldn't even tell me when they were doing the big unveil so I could go back. The way I see it is this is a significant upgrade for the same price with the faster processor and 4 gb Ram standard. I was going to pay over a grand for a 2.26 ghz with the same RAM last week and now I will pay 799.00. Now if they will just sell me one.

Don't have one of those yet but I do still have the Weiss DAC2 and I hear that Amarra is best through firewire.

I intended to use an outboard firewire 800 HD then I remembered that there is only one firewire output so I have to decide whether I use the slow onboard HD and firewire audio out or use a fast drive for storage and USB out.
