  1. In more reality based news:  my Impreza is in the shop, so they gave me a loaner.  Turned out, it was a 2024 Crosstrek.

I get to keep it through Wednesday.

I think they want me to fall in love with it and buy it.

The first part is working.  The second part would work if I had enough money.  Except it's blue.  And I would want a moonroof/sunroof/whatever.  Everything else is :chef's kiss:

Late to the Alcest train.  Really like Blackgaze, thus my love of Deafheaven.  But these guys do a lot more melodic stuff.  The Apple Music Alcest Essentials playlist is a nice 22 song, 2 hr 42 min way to enjoy music across their catalog.

    I love Alcest.  Enjoy.

Check out Holy Fawn when you get a chance.  Their latest album, Dimensional Bleed, is pure, unadulterated bliss.

this - from another thread - thx Ric.

Nice.  I love that album.  If you like that sort of thing, also check out Alleycat by Nucleus.

And if you want a rabbit hole to go down, check out T-Square and Casiopea.

Got another car control class on the books (with the BMW club, hopefully they accept my car 🙃) and I'm going to try my first road rally with the Porsche club.

When I thought rally I thought of sliding cars around on dirt rally stages but this isn't like that at all. It is more like a scavenger hunt that you do from your car and that rewards precision, not speed. I like it! Trying to nail down a co-driver/co-navigator (@Grahame ?).

I think maybe I'll do my first auto cross in April.

This car hobby is quite the rabbit-hole of stuff to do. It is helpful that a large portion of hobbyist motorsport seems to be organized on a single website, https://www.motorsportreg.com, making it easy to find out a good amount of what is going on nearby.

My ex used to do rallies like that when she was young.  She had a real knack for that sort of thing (she could guess most dinner bills to within a dollar, and usually got it closer).

Also, billiards (the whole thing about rebounding and getting it as close as possible, but not touching...

Sounds like a blast!  Do get someone who is good at simple math like that.  You can speed, but only if you're making up for lost time.

One of the Library's missions is to preserve audio-visual materials. Library employees who work at the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center (NAVCC) in Culpeper, Virginia carry out that mission on a daily basis. One of the formats they work with is old 78 RPM records like this one. Standardization practices weren't what they are today in the early part of the 20th century, so each disc is an adventure. The grooves can be different sizes, and some discs have spindle holes that were punched off-center, meaning adjustments have to be made so it can play properly. This is a quick look at the process of digitizing the audio so that it can be preserved and made more accessible to Library patrons like you! It features Library audio preservation specialist Bryan Hoffa.

I tried to find a forum friendly version to share - but it is just a short watch..

Wow, that's only an hour away, I wonder if they're hiring...I could probably contribute some records from my parents' collection that I inherited.

    EDIT:  OHMIGOSH, they are.

  5. The person in the video is not Wednesday Campanella, but rather Kom-I, in the same way that Christopher Walken is not Fatboy Slim.  Watch for the 90 second oner starting at 0:13.

EDIT:  I am wrong, that is, indeed, a member of Wednesday Campanella, and the singer, but she left in 2021, so the current lead singer doesn't look anything like that.

  6. Yeah, I'm sorry, I don't mean to bash on Mozart -- I think it says more about me than it does about him.  I just thought it'd be funny to take those 6 words out like that.  Please resume enjoying music, for Pete's sake.

Dusty, I understood it like that, I kind of feel the same with most of his music, but there are a few works that I find very compelling. Parts of the Requiem are among them.

Yeah, obviously an overgeneralization (and I, too, like his Requiem, and I enjoy it when my girl HH plays his music -- that's when I decided I loved her the best -- she made me enjoy Mozart!).

LOL, close, but no.  (I listen to prog, for Pete's sake.)  No, the sentiment I was trying to convey with that comment was similar to when someone says, "those were words".

I just don't "get" Mozart.  It doesn't resonate with me.  It just doesn't feel "evocative" to me.  There's not enough "there" there.  And other words.

Since I was thinking about it.

    Candy-O (Expanded Edition)

    Candy-O (Expanded Edition)
    The Cars
    1979

    Example:

Maybe it was the album cover and my young teen years that made me think about this album more.  🤓 But it was more unfamiliar than I thought. The first 4 tracks for sure were solid in my memory, so my brother must have played the first side a lot. Being '79 this had a much more 80s feel than I thought it would. Enjoyable with some gems in there, but not has cohesive as their first effort. The expanded edition just gives some other goodies and a few mixes that are fun enough.

I do like the story that they brought Vargas out of retirement at 83 years of age to create the iconic cover.

The big difference between the first album and Candy-O is that they got a little more new-wavier.  But it's still an insanely solid effort for That Difficult Sophomore Album.

@Hopstretch -- who was that guy who had a really groovy sound and French female backup singers and keyboardist (perhaps he was French)?  I can't remember his name and I need to look him up again, and hear more music by him.  I vaguely remember finding a video of an entire concert from him at a beach house or something.

    Ha-HA!   Baxter Dury

No, I didn't all of a sudden remember, he released a new album today.
