Sonic Studio 302 (aka Metric Halo ULN-2)
Voltron replied to jp11801's topic in Home Source Components
Yes, JP, Filburt and I put them through some paces today. They were both quite good, but the win goes to the Amarra 4. Probably closer than I expected, which means the ULN-2 was closer than I thought it would be. We listened to 16/44 and 24/96 files, and had 6 songs that we intended to compare but I think we did more like 3-4. I felt the 4 was better in terms of bass tone and definition and quantity, there is more weight to the sound (maybe the same thing), the image is a more compact and flatter on the ULN-2 and the definition is a little better with the 4. We did have some issues in trying to switch back and forth using one Firewire connection and changing settings and such, but we were ultimately able to get a sense of it and I don't think the technical glitches really prevented us from hearing the units. We also tried Filburt's modded Assemblage DAC and it sounded very good as well. The bass is very strong and it sounded very good overall both through Filburt's Headamp Dynalo and through my speakers. Great DAC for the money. -

Sorry about the toe, Mike. You know the only thing that makes a banged up big toe better, of course, is plenty of pricey whisk[e]y, so I hope you took care of yourself properly. Woke up in Mayberry, did a bit more wisteria maintenance, picked some persimmons for a neighbor, drove to SF and met JP and Filburt at my house for a ULN-2 vs. Amarra 4 comparo, with a little Filburt modded Assemblage DAC thrown in for good measure. After some hard work comparing those and fighting the lock-ups caused by switching firewire cables and software settings, and such, we headed to Toronado for some beer, pizza and/or sausages. The Limb & Life on tap was quite nice, and the Life & Limb tastes quite similar to the bottle incarnation. Capped off the day by making dinner for the family and now chilling with some tunes. Good end to the long weekend. Now toes were injured in the making of this day.

Wouldn't miss it Dom.

Hope it was good and boring right to the end Haj! Many happy returns. Cheers!

Keep the one Gail bought you, it's ballistic nylon after all! I don't think their leather is all that great, it is heavy, and the nylon could hold a bazooka.

10,000 Maniacs -- Secrects of the I Ching (UK vinyl) Cannot find the very cool cover online anywhere, so I will take a pic next time. Much better looking than the US pressing, but still sounds pretty amateurish in many ways.

Don't have it yet, Nebby. Just bought it for delivery on Tuesday. I have the 70-200 f/4L and an older wide angle L lens, so this will fill a gap for me and be an all-rounder when I need that. I think I am going to take it to the meet next weekend, so I will -- and likely you -- will see how it does.

^^^ I like. Especially on vinyl. A new album would be cool. I am going old school female rocker with the following: Pretenders -- Pretenders (Japanese vinyl)

Thanks for the suggestions, and that looks like a very cool lens, Greg. I found Amazon had the best deal for me by a couple bucks, anyway.

I think whoever that is came here solely to stir shit.

Anybody have any ideas where I could look for Black Friday deals on Canon lenses? I will search around, but if anybody already had seen something I would love to hear about it. Thanks in advance.

Happy 21st dood! Cheers

Hear hear, even in this thread started by some douchy guy with an ALO amp and IEMs he likes to post pictures of. I started the day sawing and chopping and clipping a whole lot of wisteria from the front of Mayberry. It pulled down a rain gutter and was starting to threaten parts of the railing and such, so it had to be tamed. Here are a couple shots of the pile of vanquished vines. Those of you who have visited Mayberry will recognize from the after shots that a whole lot of vine had to come down. It had been all the way up and covering the corrugated porch roof. More came down than I had hoped, actually, but some just couldn't be supported after extricating the porch railings that were pulled out of place, etc. It grows like crazy, so it will be back in no time. Afterwards, I had a beer on the porch and then went to Thanksgiving at my sister's house with 40 other people from my family, her husband's family, andmy wife's family. Two turkeys, 30 lbs. of mashed potatos (ridiculous), three kinds of stuffing (classic, veggie, and meat), two salads, 4 bags of rolls, two green bean dishes, vegetarian pasta, Nigella Lawson's sweet potato recipe with marshmellow topping, 2 kinds of gravy, cranberry sauce, 8 pies (4 pumpkin, 3 pecan, one berry), package of Trader Joes brownie bites (Grahame should have been there to microwave them though), beer, wine, etc, Good times.

I know I am old, but I get really sick of people in front of me at concerts holding up their damn phones and filming incessantly.

Anchor Steam Beer is the flagship brew of Anchor Brewing Co. It is called "Steam" because that was a generic term for beer on the west coast. It is not a lager, but a unique brew that I am not sure how to characterize. The Anchor Christmas Ale is the holiday brew that changes every year, some better than others. The tree on this year's label is a very cool Monterey Cypress that is at the entrance to Golden Gate Park in front of the park ranger's traditional home, which is now an office. It is lit up for Christmas every year. Cool story about the draftsman and the label was in the paper the other day.
