Is there a general preference?

Just to second what Jacob said, I'd go Neutrik or Canare for 1/4" plugs. I have had good luck with Switchcraft's 1/8" plugs though.

For 1/4" I would definitely recommend Neutrik over Switchcraft.

There's not much difference in their 1/4s, both are good. Their 1/8 straight are pretty close too but I think the Neutrik are more durable, Canare F12 are far better than either. In 1/8 RT angle, Neutrik all the way. SC 1/8 RT angle look great, but are crap design and fail regularly.
