Squeezebox Touch

So now SBTs are going for thirteen hundred bucks on the secondary market. But on a hopeful note we now have: http://vortexbox.org/content/149-Logitech-SqueezeBox-replacement-for-under-30 Have I mentioned lately that the VortexBox people rock.......

This is good to know since my SB3 is starting to act weird of late for no discernible reason.  Though I may just get an AppleTV since my speaker rig is my TV rig.

If you are happy with the audio being resampled 44.1k -> 48k https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2715198?start=0&tstart=0

And issues with the optical out put https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3789959?start=0&tstart=0

And the firmware updating not working for non obvious reasons ... http://www.zdnet.com/the-incredibly-annoying-case-of-the-apple-tv-update-7000008387/

Then knock yourself out.

its fine for its intended purpose, less so for audio.

You might consider the raspberry pi for such duties. It too is a work in progress

Some people have used it as a (n underpowered)  LMS Server

Or more reasonably as a client (with external usb dacs, but there seem to be issues with the pi's USB audio / Stack)

and then packaging it up in a retro form factor

The hdmi interface (for audio output) does not seem to suffer from these issues ... (search for squeezelite , raspberry pi, HDMI audio output)

We live in interesting times for cheap, capable, streaming audio transports / clients.

Hate to say it, but a two SB Touch/three Airport Express one bedroom apartment here (I know, I know) and at this point the later is getting a lot more use. All depends where your music is sourced, but system-wide iOS device streaming is what pushed me over to the Apple solutions. Wish a laptop/desktop on was unnecessary for all (non-local file) streaming with the Touch. Course if your situation is even slightly different none of what I'm saying applies.

That's more reasonable. Still a bunch of money for a discontinued product. Then.... http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002LARRDA/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new I don't know what any of these guys will eventually get, but my plan to buy two spares when the price slid south part $150 looks to be pretty much shot in the ass. I just ordered a PogoPlug. We'll see how it works.....

Alan and I built some VAMPs using the image Andrew from Vortexbox put together. They went together flawlessly and they "just work", straight out of the gate. They play 24/192 files natively to boot. :):):)

^ Nice.  I was seriously thinking of getting things together for it recently when my SB3 stopped outputting music and couldn't figure out why until I realized one of the cats knocked off the digital cable from the back.

Probably still going to end up with AppleTV, though.  With folks other than myself or my wife (e.g., grandparents, my sister, babysitter, etc.) needing to use the system on occasions, it would far easier to have a visual guide that pops up on the TV.

Does anyone have issues playing 24 96 files? I am getting audio dropouts. Just checked my original source files and they are fine. Is it a bandwidth/Ethernet issue?

Not me, but before I upgraded my WiFi setup, I got weirdness like that on uncompressed streams. So it could be network.

It would occasionally happen to me over wireless with very high bitrate 24/96 FLAC (usually quite compressed rock albums)

On the VAMP front - I tried out my little NetGear WiFi to Ethernet bridge on the VAMP and it seems to to work fine. It works so well on my BluRay player that I literally forgot it was there.

I bought mine at Best Buy, but I can't imagine there's anything wrong with using the refurb version for half the price.

I am network challenged. So this replaces a USB dongle and is better, because you can move it closer to your router and it has a better antenna?

Actually, it gives the VAMP WiFi connectivity without worrying about about drivers for a USB WiFi dongle, which might be a bit of a stretch for the VAMP. (Although it's an intriguing possibility) WiFi connectivity being a Squeezebox function the VAMP doesn't natively replicate. The fellow who develops the VAMP is into HomePlug, the Ethernet over power mains thing. The idea of deliberately putting that much RF on my power circuits kind of creeps me out, so I wanted to toss out a more conventional idea. The real thread is over on vortexbox.org. We're just kind of following along.

Thanks Grahame.

Not surprisingly works wherever you can add an address (WunderRadio on iOS, etc.).
