July 5, 201114 yr So, I have an idea for a new thread. Basically, I'm going to be playing bartender for an upcoming bachelor party. What I want to do is to make up a small drink menu, where the names of the drinks are somehow related to my buddy. He's a English PhD with research on Lovecraft, who is converting to Catholicism and enjoys fencing and Japanese culture. So, we'd either throw out drinks that would fit the genre (i.e. Lucien Gaudin Cocktail) or a name of a cocktail that doesn't exist, and people would work up a recipe that matched the name, which is either an original cocktail or somehow modified. Okay! So, the first name would be 'French Letter' and then someone would post a cocktail. Or, someone could take the Lovecraft suggestion and suggest a title to a drink, etc.
July 9, 201114 yr Author Ok, first drink without a clever name. It's basically a Hemingway Daiquiri. 1.75 oz Wrey & Nephew overproof rum .75 oz fresh lime juice .25 oz maraschino liqueur .25 oz grapefruit juice .25 oz Campari 1 sugar cube In an old fashioned glass, muddle the cube with the lime juice. Then transfer to a shaker. Some sugar will remain. Add ingredients, except for Campari. Shake! Float Campari in drink served with crushed ice. I think this one is nice. The W&N is subdued here, but has it's original character. The Campari really adds something. Maybe remove the grapefruit juice? Edited July 9, 201114 yr by luvdunhill
July 9, 201114 yr Author I got some sake as well to experiment with a cocktail. Anathema I know. Any suggestions?

EDIT: I totally misread the intent of the thread. My new suggestion is NecronoDaiquiri. But I like Dinny's suggestion. I got some sake as well to experiment with a cocktail. Anathema I know. Any suggestions? Japanese Cobbler 3 ounce sake 1 ounce fresh lemon juice ½ ounce orange curaçao ¾ ounce simple syrup Shake all ingredients and strain into a large goblet, top with sweet or dry soda to taste. Garnish with a sprig of mint and fresh fruit. Courtesy of Dale DeGroff Edited July 10, 201114 yr by morphsci
July 10, 201114 yr Author Fun with Sake..... 1.5 oz tequila 1.5 oz grapefruit juice 1 oz sake 0.25 oz simple syrup 3 oz sake 0.5 oz Shrubb 1 oz lemon juice 0.75 oz simple syrup I like both of these.
July 10, 201114 yr Author Lucien Gaudin Cocktail One with Vya Extra Dry and one with Dolin Blanc. The Vya is better. The Blanc doesn't compliment as well as ends up being too bitter and showy. Did I ever say I like Plymouth?
July 10, 201114 yr Or, someone could take the Lovecraft suggestion and suggest a title to a drink, etc. Something with absinthe would be highly appropriate for that.
July 22, 201114 yr Author Well, the party is Saturday, here's what I came up with.PGE Cocktail Menu.pdf
July 22, 201114 yr That's an excellent list. Now I'm thirsty. Oh and I think you have an unnecessary comma in between Peychaud's and bitters under the Vieux Carre.
July 22, 201114 yr Author That's an excellent list. Now I'm thirsty. Oh and I think you have an unnecessary comma in between Peychaud's and bitters under the Vieux Carre. Thanks! The interesting thing is, there really aren't a huge amount of ingredients here. I think I have two wine cases packed up, and even that contains a good number of duplicate spirits...
July 22, 201114 yr Great list Marc! If you want more name suggestions, here are a couple. The Rhum Old Fashioned could get a fencing twist as the Rhum Riposte, Riposte de Rhum, or Rhum Contre-Riposte I'm not sure how appealing it is, but Panther Piss Sazerac has a certain ring to it given your choice of rye.
July 22, 201114 yr I was definitely going to suggest that last one but I was hoping he was only using the name, not the actual "spirit".
September 10, 201114 yr Author Not Theory (proposed) 3/4 oz Reposado Tequila 3/4 oz Gran Classico Bitter 3/4 oz Cocchi Torino 1/4 oz simple syrup Stir and garnish with a grapefruit peel. Sorta a play on words that this is an odd mix of ingredients at first sight. I realize that this is similar to other drinks, but this particular combo of particular ingredients is very nice.
September 10, 201114 yr Actually that looks pretty good. I've been meaning to ask, what do you think of the Gran Classico Bitters? How does it compare to Campari?
September 10, 201114 yr Author In my opinion, its better than Campari. It's very versatile as well, it easily substitutes for Campari, Italian vermouth and even something like Peychaud's... Not a direct substitute obviously, but it always results in an interesting variation. Highly recommended.
September 10, 201114 yr Cool and good to know. I remember seeing it up in Champaign, now I just have to remember where.
September 10, 201114 yr Love the name Marc. As a knot theorist, I really should approve the drink first though. Unfortunately, I will have to make it with Campari since I don't those bitters.
September 17, 201114 yr Author So, I have another one. I wish I had an anjeo tequila to try in this one, but as is it's tasty. Not sure on the bitter choice, but I don't have a lot to choose from. Definitely needs Jim or Al or anyone else to take a stab at it. (no name, but a Spanish twist on Monte Carlo would work) 2 oz tequila 1/2 oz Benedictine 2 dashes Peychauds 2 dashes grapefruit bitters Stir!
October 17, 201114 yr Author So, hosting a dead-Bond themed shin-dig, and looking for a cocktail menu to support. Here's what I have.... any other Bond cocktail references, or obvious "dead cocktails"? Vesper Martini (Casino Royale) Vodka Martini (Dr. No) Scotch and Soda (very popular, not sure what to reference here though) Vodka Tonic (Dr. No) Gin and Tonic (On HMSS) Americano (From a View to Kill) Old-Fashioned (Live and Let Die) Stinger (Thunderball) Mojito (Die Another Day) Black Velvet (Diamonds are Forever) Negroni (?) Pink Gin (The Man with the Golden Gun) Mint Julep (Goldfinger) Rum Collins (Thunderball) Zombie Corpse Reviver #2 others?
October 17, 201114 yr Red Death Cocktail 1/2 oz vodka 1/2 oz peach liqueur 1/2 oz amaretto almond liqueur 1/2 oz triple sec 1/2 oz sloe gin 1/2 oz lime juice orange juice Pour all ingredients (except orange juice) into an ice-filled collins glass. Fill with orange juice, and serve.
