much abliged John, cant ask for more relevent experience than that! and i'm glad you mentioned the feel as well, it was something I meant to specify, since it still needs to be tactile. it might just work, any chance I could file 0.5mm off top and bottom without riuning the integrity of the encapsulation/Can? it does save just a little by being panel mount, I need another excuse to do a board revision with new regs and with the amp on the same PCB anyway after a year now, might even do some inputs for an Amanero, as I use this also in the office for watching iview and SBS online with some active monitors. i've been meaning to make a new front panel with a couple seeed/itead PCBs now they do custom routing and then mount all the indication LEDs as SMD and use a frosted perspex false panel in front of that. the proof of concept worked well for the last 12 months or so, so its time to get it into a final format. pricing isnt too bad on that unit either, looks good quality. smaller would be better, but its a good back up. has anyone else got any recommendations? I will have to file a flat on there for the knob grub screw. thanks again mate! Jeremy

Hi guys, can anyone recommend a small (suitable for transportable chassis) single deck (preferrably sealed) reasonable quality, and rugged potentiometer model? 5kΩ or perhaps 10KΩ (I can just parallel a fixed R). I can deal with stereo if need be and just wire it up mono, but it needs to be smallish and reliable. it doesnt nessecarily have to be amazingly linear, as its used for controlling ESS digital volume; so just attenuates a 3.3VDC voltage which is sent to an ADC/MCU. the ones I have been using are just too flimsy and exposed and when contact starts to falter and resistance gets screwy, instead of losing volume like in a normal analogue setup, I get bursts of full volume! the ESS is directly connected to an internal balanced combo IV/headamp... as you can imagine through my jh13, full volume isnt good!! format is not a huge deal, i'll probably do myself another PCB to suit, but it needs to fit within say 10-18mm vertical height and standard ~6mm shaft to suit my Titanium knob . I live a stones throw from the Beach here, so sealed is definitely desireable. ive gone through 2 of these in the last year of use and i'm onto my last one after the 2nd started dying yesterday perhaps Justin may have something suitable? are the Alps RK series still the way to go? something like RK09Y11L0001 perhaps? anyone have any experience with these or other recommendations? can anyone recommend a source for them for just a few pieces? the more suitable parts seem only available wholesale. thanks in advance for any help with selection and sourcing sorry for the long post Jeremy

absolutely love the stuff, I use it everywhere. I use the cardas stuff and since I love SMD, its a godsend. I too love the smell of it, reminds me of the guilty pleasure as a child liking the smell of textas (felt tips). it adds an extra cleaning process ar the end for best appearances, but its well worth it. the cardas is no clean, but leaves some waxy kinda residue that is best cleaned off if you want it looking shmick. effortless shiny smooth joints every time and great for rework. when I get asked by beginners about recommended tools of the trade, flux is right near the top for me

KG, yep linear is doing some of the most amazing stuff in this area I have seen. the active current source controllers are particularly interesting. difficult to find around the place, but you can buy direct even in small quantities AFAIK and farnell carries a chunk of it (albeit at the usual farnell inflated prices) they have a fairly generous samples policy also in fact they seem to be revolutionizing this whole area. below will source/sink +/-500ma, but you can use this in conjunction with mosfets to boost current capability. very interesting device. I toyed with the idea of and may still pursue, using this in place of a TLE2426 rail splitter in my portable dac/amp (portable buffalo II), so instead of buffering a Vground reference, use this to truly actively control the sourcing and sinking of current in a floating bipolar battery supply. In effect this thing BECOMES the ground channel; with only a few external components and not much in the way of power consumption. Currently i'm just using a plain old center tapped 4 cell and 6 cell A123 lifepo4 battery pack (these things are so good, anything I add after them will fall short), so I dont want for current, but this thing is still on the radar as its just so cool. linear are the kings of battery management, insanely low noise LDOs and just generally kicking ass in forward thinking power supply devices IMO. I was blown away with how completely their stuff integrates, but you really dont see their stuff used as often as you would think in audio, but i'm sure their defense contracts are substantial 1970fb current sink-source.pdf

nah i'd say the stereo price is legit. he has very good prices on his pots and rotary switches; along with a few other things. cant see how the 4 gang could be right though, unless hes doing some sort of clearance.

quite possibly the case isnt grounded to earth ground (even through a loop breaker) and most likely the reason you havent heard it on the KGSS is because electrostatic amps are inherently balanced by nature. adding a 4th channel to the B22 would also probably solve the issue (or at least mask it) with CMRR. but sure get a better shielded transformer in there. personally I would only ever use ferrites or a choke on the shield, I just dont like the idea of using them in the signal path when there are other ways to solve the issue. grounding is an area that isnt done correctly all that often and there are fairly straight forward rules that when followed, go a log way to ridding the system of any noise such as this.

sure mate, we have just been conversing over that option. it does work out cheaper to send separately and the small flatrate only takes 64oz, which together we are just over when packing is included. I dont particularly need it in a hurry, but at the same time, we have just sold our house and settlement is in 3 weeks time. if you are able to ship them (mine separately) to me by earlyish next week they would still make it here given the flatrate 'priority mail' 6-10 business day window. i'll simplify it since you still arent getting the picture; hint 1 device = many remotes. I never said anything about having the dac functions on the amp....... my journey from the bus stop is 1 listening to my portable dac/amp/JH13 via USB (camera connection) 2 I round the corner and pick up my hub, wake mac from sleep 3 check volume on (or choose) my transport in audio midi setup panel (RME PCI interface feeding BNC, AES or, M2TECH USB) 4 select playlist in itunes as if I was there 5 hit play 6 walk through the door to the music I just selected 7 open mail 8 relax on the deck, sipping single malt, listening to tunes and checking email *volume will be controlled directly with ackodac uC as soon as the API is finished and again, it doesnt have to be an ipad, just seems the logical choice (FOR ME) I get the idea of a cool hefty dedicated remote to match the superb chassis, but I have enough of them and I personally like having it all on the one device much more, so was just a suggestion. BTW I used to run high resolution (>10000dpi) drum scanners in a pre-press house for my job and photographic compositing (in photoshop) freelance for many years after that; I have a pretty good idea what high resolution looks like. my guess is you were using iphone apps on the ipad early in the piece before native apps were the norm. but no more OT, its clear you are anti idevices and thats cool; therefore this conversation is not only off topic, but not going to go anywhere. i'll go back to watching these sexy amps take shape from the sidelines and look forward to hearing Nattonrice's amp at the next Sydney meet. good show chaps!! stay safe

haha, theres always someone wanting to hate (love the smileys here) I guess you missed the content of the brackets in my post (specifically inserted to circumvent a post like yours), ipad just happens to be IMO the most suitable platform, due to the excellent screen, speed and size of it; but if you write it for jailbroken ipads etc. you can do so in an open format than any VNC, WPD or SSH capable device can use. The ipad is THE BEST remote i've used, I can have my music playing before I walk in the door (even continue with the SAME music I was listening to on the ipad); expediting the time it takes to destress from the insane bus people . its like flipping through a record shelf; soon I will be able to change HW/SW settings on my ackodac directly, including volume, samplerate and even ESS9012 registers/filter modes if I like. so you could have something like the blowtorch LCD, but larger and higher resolution; then you could order a pizza on it. thats another thing I like about it is that it ISNT yet another remote, but one of many things on the same device. so only one remote needed to perform every task to get music playing at the right level but hey its just a suggestion, I can appreciate the want for a dedicated thing too, but you could bet making a custom sexy billet Ti one would cost you almost as much as an ipad and you would still need another one for the source
