  3. jaguar was in the shop 41 times in 39 months. Never again. Some of the parts were on their 3rd replacement. (the autoleveling headlight assemblys at $1400 each) (requires removal of entire bumper) Its a distant memory that is fading. It was all under warranty, but the half a day in the wrong direction every time to take it to the dealer got old quick. It was a great deal of fun when it was working right. Corvette has yet to be in the shop for repairs in 27 months with about 23k miles on it. Other than oil changes, the only replacement part so far was the cabin air filter. And trust me, i don't drive it like a little old lady. So far on the CTS, only a firmware upgrade to the nav system. (xm live traffic update gizmo that has software bugs galore)
  4. If it is a 6 pin plug it is low bias only, and will only fit into some of the older amps with both regular and pro sockets.

  7. You have no idea. My biggest superconducting magnet is about 12 times more powerful than that thing. And its gap is 3 feet long. if you want an isolation system that really works, you really need to go with a pneumatic system, or pneumatics and active piezoelectrics.   8. yep, some of the usual suspects have added their twist to the thing. It will be a sphere, of about .35 inch thickness. It will come apart. The finger holes will be removable. Then i can put a small robot into the thing. Perfect 300 game every time. Trouble is that it is going to dent quick, and the halves will probably not unscrew too many times. May need to change from screw threads to an inner ring with flat screws.
  9. ultra trendy aluminum bowling ball it is. Start by cutting the block in half, use the NC lathe to cut out spheres on the inside, tap and thread to put the thing together. Then machine the outside to perfectly round. Add finger holes, tap the holes from the inside, and use machined finger tubes. If i calculate everything correctly it should end up the correct weight. Anodize or paint....

  11. from here Calculation of density with tungsten 1 cubic foot of tungsten is 1200 lbs. The diameter of a standard bowling ball is 8.6 inches... So a 10 inch cube would be the minimum. electromagnets are very inefficient. Its the reason superconducting magnets exist, because there is no other way.
  12. I've been seriously thinking of making some of my own tubes. I used to make them back in the zenith days, and i did hand made plasma stuff at lucitron. It is actually pretty easy, and i do have access to a really nice glass lathe.
  13. This bowling ball thing got into my head last night. So i could machine it out of a solid piece of titanium, but i did titanium last year. A solid piece of african ebony might be really nice. The titanium is most likely out of the price range for a joke, and the chunk of ebony might be unobtainable at any price. I figure i need 1 cubic foot. maybe some kind of glowing orb... edit: bowling ball made out of titanium would be about 200 lbs and my price is $78 per lb can't be...

  15. One of the people in the machine shop was not amused at last years thing. So no hazardous materials. Nothing radioactive, no beryllium copper, no asbestos... No loud screeching noises attempting to machine damascus... And yes the hammer did take quite a while to machine. justin came up with the idea of a magnetic levitation table for the BHSE...
  16. OK, so every year about this time, i decide to do something silly and over the top. Last year was the titanium hammer. I need ideas for this year. Has to involve computer controlled machine tools. Has to involve expensive raw materials... Obviously it has to be practically useless.

I do have lots of new stuff, but showing off a $10k preamp in that kind of crowd would be a serious waste of time as i have no intentions of publishing the schematics and if justin would decide to build and sell the thing it would be 2 or more years away. The fight between ray's electrostatic fanboys and mikhail's electrostatic fanboys should be highly entertaining.
  19. And a certain person just stopped by my office and begged me for a BH, BHSE, aristaeus, and a SACD standard for the weekend show. I was specifically not invited as it would upset ray. He really thought i was going to give him that pile of stuff on his "good name" alone. Ray already owns an aristaeus anyway, and if he wants a BHSE, he can buy one just like everyone else.

Weight of magnet 4300 lbs. Runs on a DC amplifier that is up to 60 volts at 25 amperes. WATER COOLED... I have an old 3000 lb magnet from a VG sector instrument. You can have it for free. You pay for shipping, or your pick it up. Weighs about 2500 lbs. Also needs water cooling.
  23. Northwestern University has an entire building just for nano stuff. And 6 professors doing lots of interesting things with nanotubes and nanoparticles. Can't say much till the patents are filed. But it is ultra neat... In theory you could make an electrostatic diaphram out of nanotubes, and be able to drive it push pull with no more than about 30 volts. And it would be very efficient.
