  1. Well, I will never claim to have a golden ear. However, it seems to me that the bass is very tight and very dynamic. What I do notice is the resonance or tinny, off-kilter sound signature caused by the thin plastic can shell (my guess). That definitely adds to a sense of muddiness, but if you can stand to raise the volume, the dynamics of the driver drown this out - sort of. IOW, the driver sounds great, but the housing ... not so much. Or, I could just be full of BS. Come to think of it, that's probably the more likely case. Yeah, I'm going to have to figure out how to pay him back for this one. I can barely listen to any of my other phones after getting used to the highs on that Yamaha. Marvel Mystery Oil is much better ... but seriously, I don't know what's in the stuff, but I've used this RailZip junk for years on Walkmans and such - works great. It was developed to cut down on oxidation with rails in model railroading. Plus, it doesn't dissolve plastic, which many similar formulations will do. http://www.internettrains.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=PAA-PT23&Category_Code=BMCCATWAL This may be obvious to many of you, but the highs are much better when I hold the cans away from ears. So, as you say - a small amount of reflective material might just do the trick.
  2. OK - I'll have to modify my initial opinion. After just a small bit of burn-in, the T50RP's are really starting to improve. Highs are coming in quite nicely, which is a bit strange compared to dynamic phones - it's the bass that comes in later, or at least a sweetening of initially-harsh highs. They also seem to be taking more volume travel to get the same sound level, but maybe I'm going more deaf as I go along with these things. They're still not at the level of the effortless highs of Colin's Yamah YH-3's, but the bass on the T50's is as tight as any I've heard. You guys have posted about this, but that locking mini-plug and socket is the pits. I'm going to have to use my model railroad Rail-Zip on it shortly to improve the contact and stop the cutting in and out on the right can ... very irritating for brand new phones.
  3. Well, I can confirm that the T50rp at B&H Photo is the NEW one with the smooth pads. We agreed it was one of the higher priced deals with shipping - about $81, but I've ordered from them on and off for 30 years - I guess I felt they might be reliable after that length of time. Unfortunately, I'm not impressed so far - they don't hold a candle to the modded Yama YH-3's you let me borrow, except for more bass. The T50rp's are definitely more efficient than the other Ortho's I've tried, but seems like mine are rolled off in the highs compared to the fluid transperency of the Yamaha's. Maybe more burn-in?
  4. A guy at TooleAudio told me about it. I actually joined a month before pre-Head-Fi-crash, btw, I just lurked for awhile.
  5. Boy, that does take one back - I stacked Advents! Kevin is right, too - I seem to remember the small Advents had issues. It was bad enough stacking the regulars - you had to have a good amp that didn't balk at low impedance. At least, that's what I remember ... and it's been what - 35yrs?
  6. You might check BDent - http://www.bdent.com. I know they have some Sanyo OsCons; not sure if they have the SMD type, though. One thing if you look, though - their search feature is very unforgiving. You should enter as little of the part number as possible to get a good scatter of results. Otherwise, if you have one syntax error in the way they store the part number, you'll get a blank.
  7. Yeah, I'm kind of with Grawk - the best rebuild is a clean one from a virgin wipe. The problem is that Jude had so much crap built on top of things with all that advertising, there's probably no way to re-create things in a stable manner. The further away you get from the base forum software, the harder it will be to re-create it in a stable state. Did anyone notice that d*mn "Intellitext" that went on in the last few months? That stuff is a virus all on its own.
  8. Soniccraft A wonderful source for Black Gates and many film caps, including their own "Sonicap" brand. They generally carry most of the boutique parts, connectors, etc. Great service and absolutely reliable.
  9. Yeah. He's bothered a few of us on occasion. Instead of discussing their suspicions with you, they go right in and delete one of your For Sale threads, edit your signature, etc. - then wait for you to find out about it on your own. Then when you do find out, cry foul and point out their error, the response is, "Get over it. You were moderated." There may be some karma in some of what's happening now. Although, I really wouldn't wish it on anybody. For that level of commercial interest, there are bound to be even more consequences than what we're seeing talked about here.
  10. Ditto. It's been awhile since I administered a server cluster, but I remember enough that RAID wasn't all it was cracked up to be. (I was running hardware-based RAID-5 on several servers running process controls.) Even back then, the controller was recognized as a weak point unless you duplicated that, too - and the power supplies. A backup restore was impossible if you lost the right drive on the OS volume. It happened to me once. I remember a Microsoft Engineer telling me at the time that restoring a tape backup on the operating system was like trying to get in and out of a car doing 90mph. We had to rebuild it from scratch. They've probably fixed that over the years, but I bet they are new pitfalls to replace that one. Also, does anyone else think that 4Gigs of RAM on a 24 drive server is a little on the light side? I guess it's not as crucial on a NAS unit, but as they said - they ran into memory issues just trying to run the restore from the backup. With as many vendors depending on the ads and proxy entries into their e-business storefronts, they're probably going to have to send out a significant number of refunds. They may even have some stores residing on their systems. It may be a coincidence, but TTVJ was offline for quite some time during the same period. Anyway, this may be piling on, but perhaps a more rigorous approach was warranted. I guess that's what they were trying to do by moving to a clustering arrangement, but the weaknesses hit first.
  11. Actually, I think that's Piccolo with your Stax, isn't it? He gets to do what he wants as the meet sponsor, doesn't he? Now I know what you guys mean about the boobies. I saw them, but I guarantee I wasn't going to touch those things with my daughter around. I like the idea of those nametags and space labels they had in the NYC photos. We need to do that next time.
  12. Crap. Where's the edit-post around here? I'm never going to make it if I can't edit my posts and correct my spelling. ... maybe I'm toothless and barefoot, that's the problem.
  13. What can it hurt? Most think we're toothless and shoeless down here anyway. As for Alabama, why would they cared? They're getting everything they want from Georgia's reservoirs.
  14. More pics: Many, many thanks to PiccoloNamek who hosted the event at the Holy Cross Anglican Church in Loganville.
  15. Thanks for the kind words on the MAXes, MexicanDragon. I was very impressed with those HF-1's of yours, too. Here's some pics of the meet:
  16. TomB

    slow forum

Yup - been that way since early yesterday evening - at least, maybe longer.
  17. Careful is as careful does. I thought I had learned by now that you hated tubes. Interesting marketing method to attract customers, though.
  18. Very nice. So how do they sound? Something tells me you're not testing them with a SOHA.
