  1. I've been fortunate enough to have power this entire time, but I am still experiencing a serious voltage sag. Even now I'm barely above 100V. I went around the house and unplugged anything that I deemed voltage-sensitive. Unfortunately there's some things I can't unplug, like the fridge, boiler, stove and of course the internets boxes. I took walk through my yard this morning and there's a lot of blowdown. The roofs of my outbuildings appear to be in tact, which is a blessing. It looks like we got lucky WRT flooding. I've seen some photos from north an east of here, and it's not pretty.
  2. Route 9 in Wilmington, VT. Taxi in NYC. Very lucky. Fair Haven, NY.
  3. Yeow. Power's still on, but I've got a major voltage sag here. 98V coming out of the wall right now. My AR preamp does not like it, and shut itself off. I turned off the rest of my audio gear to be safe. The lappy's power brick is rated 100-240V, so I suspect it'll live. Shutting down just about everything else.
  4. *sigh* Just checked the basement, and the foundation is holding fine. Unfortunately, the space by my front door is leaking again. The contractor who installed the door has been back TWICE to stop the leaking and clearly failed both times.
  5. Crikey. Just got woken up by the wind. When I said "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" I was commenting on a video I thought I posted, but didn't. I was referring to this one: Why can't hurricanes hit Hollywood? Speaking of... Guard patrols Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during Hurricane Irene. Shit just got real. The water isle at a local Stop and Shop, Central CT. Eastern North Carolina. Gas station canopy in Avon, NC (Outer Banks) Start of Irene from Observation Deck of Empire State Building, 9:45am The storm makes landfall on the North Carolina coast. Central Jersey resident is "prepared." The road heading out of southern Jersey. Atlantic City Beach The empty Grand Central Terminal Irene making waves in Rhode Island. Hilton Hotel in Ocean City, MD is prepared. House in Richmond, VA. High tide yesterday at Edisto Beach, SC. Images (mostly) courtesy of reddit's /r/irene.
  6. Up too early to meet the locksmith pre-hurricane. I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
  7. $165 or $30
  8. Being a somewhat paranoidal New Englander of Vineyard descent, I am already overstocked with canned goods. I drew off a few gallons of drinking water this afternoon, and I'm going to do several times that this evening for toilet flushing (I have an electric well, not town water). I also have two new bottles of Scotch and a whole stack of cigars in case the power (or worse yet, the INTERNET) goes out. I took the AC out of the window (boy, that sucked) and battened down all the hatches I could. I'm more concerned about flooding than I am high winds. I moved all my lighting equipment and anything else of value to higher elevation in the basement. Now I'm going to hit one grocery store and see how thoroughly it's picked over by other paranoidal New Englanders. As per usual, the greatest danger is other people.

  10. Nice, but it is my duty to inform you that Velvia 50 is the real deal, not 100 or 100F.
  11. I just killed the Eastern Wood Pewee that has been plaguing me the entire summer using a 1986 Sheridan Blue Streak airgun. I sort-of feel bad for the little @#%$, but he chose to sing his two note call outside my window REALLY LOUDLY for 17 hours a day. Three months of that would cause Mother Theresa to take up arms.
