I am lucky in that my mother is an awesome lady. I get along with her well, and road trips with her are not a problem. My grandmother, OTOH, is a force of destruction that can upset even the most stable situation. She's has 92 years to master the art, and she's a fricken blackbelt. Today went very well, with the exception of me clocking my head hard on the trunk of the car as I was trying put granny's cane away. I hit it off with Irene, my grandmother's friend. I got to see many original prints done by her husband, as well as two books and and a bunch of postcards. She's in her 80s, so the internets are a vague idea to her. She did manage to get someone to put up a rudimentary website showing some of his work. At the end of the day, I asked if I could see her husband's cameras. There were two Leicas, a Rolliflex, a 1950s Nikon rangefinder, and two more modern SLRs. I took pictures of all of them. I also saw the darkroom he built in the 1950s (which was a dream workspace). There will be an extended geek session about all of this in the photography thread ...later. Right now, Knuckles must faceplant.

Woke up entirely to early. Now I'm set to drive my Mum and Granny to the Berkshires. We're visiting a friend of the family who's in her 80s. Her husband was a large format landscape photographer in the mid part of the 20th century. Seeing his work (and cameras) should be interesting. The lady is quite a talker, and so is my Grandmother. I hope I survive it. 0_o

The WAT? Ya rly. After asking about cable ties in the "Whatchoo bought?" thread, I concluded that this topic needs further discussion in its own, less scrollerrific thread. There's two distinct subjects here: #1 Keeping cables that are in-use from taking over everything in sight. I'm not so good at this. The back of my headphone/computer rig looks like a Moog modular on steroids, and my HT rig even scares Cthulhu. I'm curious if any H-Cers are successful in keeping the upper hand over their interconnects. Maybe I should call this Post A Picture of [the back of] Your Rig. #2 Keeping cables that are not currently in use sorted. I wear several hats: computer geek, home audio snob, lighting tech, and occasional sound engineer. Each area has its own requisite pile of cables. I have a lot of cable ties, but still not enough to keep all the copper I have coiled and sorted. Experience has taught me that the cable ties that don't stay attached are all but useless, especially for field work. The kind I like look like this: I asked in the bought thread for links to places that sell cable ties in bulk. That sucks, Salty. I have not had any experience with that personally, but I have seen the subject come up on dpreview before. I spent much of today (and what felt like all of yesterday) banging my head against rsync, and still haven't figure out how to do what I want. I really should be posting this in the computer forum

Quite a while back, a head-caser mentioned in here that they bought a large assortment of velcro cable ties. Foolishly, I didn't save the URL. I have a whole mess of cables I'd like to keep sorted. Anyone got a suggestion where I should look? I'd like longer ties if possible, and the kind that stay attached to the cable. I know where to get that variety from a couple pro outlets, but the cost per tie is kind of insane for how many I need.

Now that I have use of both hands again, I've gone back to the infrared spectrum: My IR PowerShot G2 can shoot RAW, but it can't do RAW and jpeg at the same time. As an experiment, I went out and fired off a couple dozen exposures in RAW mode and then converted them in Photoshop. The end results are not earth-shatteringly different, but the process was interesting.

Hmm. I will take the above under advisement. Mr. Chalk has been kind enough to send me his old modulator. If that doesn't work out, I'll be looking at a new head unit, I think. My Subaru's stock stereo is unusual in that it's two DIN units, the amp/radio/tape and a 6-disc in-dash player. I can't imagine I could get a replacement head unit (that wasn't a Subaru) that would work with the changer.
