The day started well with an IPA from 21st Amendment brewery but the promise of an easy day soon passed. We set up both the amarra 4 and the sonic 302 and got made sure the drivers and sonic consoles were set up (Mike thanks for emailing the 302 file). Like good audio geeks we then did a run through on our test songs and got the output setting stabilized using a SPL meter. Let the games begin... well not so fast as every time we switched dacs either the sonic console hung up or the amarra software got hung up. We were able to go back and forth between the two dacs a few times even with the glitches. The model four had better dynamics, lower and better bass, the image the 4 threw out had better definition with greater front and back stage definition. The model 4 also sounded more open on top. We also fired up Filburts assemblage dac and played that with the model 4. The assemblage had greater bass weight and tonally was thicker sounding but the 4 had greater feeling of openness to me, they both were really great but I may be used to the metric halo house sound. I would really like to do a longer term comparison as I think particularly with dacs differences are more subtle and are often time heard better after a few days with a the "better" unit in your system then switch back the the other unit. We did salvage the day with a few pints from Toranado beer bar after the listening was done.

I would love an idler just to try but finding one in great shape, ready to play is difficult and costly. My best turntable experience was at the VSAC show hearing a 401 in a birch ply plinth out of massive gotu horns. Direct drives to me sound better (greater focus, dynamics, soundstage) than do the belt drives I have played with, including the LP12, VPI Superscoutmaster, Scout and even the table of my dreams the Galibier Serac. When you get in the post $5k realm and into the upper Galibiers, modded aries from VPI or Raven tables DD is a cheaper and arguably sonically at least as good as many sub 5k belt drive tables.

PIcked this up Friday, stone mint example of a Denon DP-59L, looks like it just came out of a store in 1983 This one so far is still my favorite but I need to do a better head to head with the Denon

had a moment to check out the JH13s with the Balancing Act and a Spectral DAC, very nice and zero hiss/noise at listening levels and above, his/noise only at levels that would damage your hearing. Great sound and a good match, not sure that it is that much better than the stacker ll but I'll need to compare them at the next meet.

I'd love to do a two song vinyl transfer comparing the two as well to see how the ADC compares as well. Let's see if I sell the Sonic 302, one bicycle, a guitar, my HF2s and went on ramen for a few weeks I think I could swing it.
