He had an old Audio Alchemy transport going into an Audio Note Dac 1. The good news for you is that he lives in Santa Barbara so you can probably arrange to be here some time to behold it. It's definitely worth the trip.

Happy Birthday Dave. I hope that it was too "shocking" to be another year older!

<snip>
The K1000 sounded really nice, but I actually thought the HP-1s were gorgeous. We all agreed that Frank needs to slap on some speaker taps and maybe a 4-pin XLR instead of the 1/4. Nice stuff.
I can't make the comparison because I didn't listen to a K1000, but the HP-1 was fantastic. As I pointed out in the previous post, it's the first pair of Grados that I could love.
The best news is that I discovered that Frank lives in Santa Barbara too. So hopefully I can invite myself over and listen to them again and again. For me, his amp was the star of the meet. :prettyprincess:

And I love the space cadet look Ken has going on.
Yep, I finally found some Grados that I could love, the HP-1000 series. I could be happy with either the HP-1 or HP-2. Unfortunately, neither my wallet nor my wife could be happy with them. Sigh.

Happy Birthday!

Minor correction. My wife said that he's 57 today. She's right. I looked it up and his birthday is January 30, 1951. Now back to our regularly scheduled dissing.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I was looking through my boxes of dead players and found a new Toshiba combo DVD/VHS player. I seem to remember having one of them die so this is probably a replacement from Costco. I'll try to go easier on this one. Nate's idea of an on/off timer is a good one and I'll probably try that. If and when this fails, I'll either go with the Pioneer or an Oppo.

It turns out the sometimes it doesn't matter if you save them or not. They just disappear.

I often play a movie to help me fall asleep. Of course, this means that a DVD can run overnight or even for days at a time if I forget to remove the DVD. I've gone through a series of inexpensive (<$100) DVD players. They run fine for a couple of months and then I'll find the image frozen on the screen and the player will no longer initialize a DVD. I thought that maybe the laser lens was dirty so I took the most recent failure apart to see what was going on. It turns out that the drive will no longer spin the disk. The machine is a Toshiba SD-K840 (a Costco special) and the drive seems to be direct (i.e. no belt).
I considered getting a new drive, but decided instead to buy a more robust player instead. I'm looking for a reliable DVD player that is < $200 (it would be better if < $150). It doesn't need to have great picture and sound quality. It just has to provide a decent picture and decent sound. What it needs to be able to do is last a while. Can anybody recommend such a beast?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

get an extreme or mpx3!!!!
An Extreme will drive them. Also either a PPX3 Slam or MPX3 Slam will do it. I don't think that a non-Slam MPX3 will do a good job driving low impedance headphones.

I find black pepper gives a blacker background and lower noise floor.
Is that before or after being cryo'ed?

I hope we can get that point from carolina in the 2 games they have in hand on us...and I LOVE that last 10 column. It's weird being in DC and watching a team and having hope that there will be spring hockey...it feels so weird.
The weirdness has nothing to do with the location. It's the team!

Sometimes we like to disagree even if we have the same opinions.
No we don't!

tkam won once the imaginary votes were counted. I casted a lot of imaginary votes for him!

Ken, if you get a pair of those purple boots, no one will doubt your craziness. Mike, we're getting you that Teres!
I'll wear them if one of those rich lawyers will buy them. Size 9 please.
-
Oh, I also went a little crazy at the eye doctor today bought four pairs of glasses because I couldn't decide on one. Knowing me, I'll probably wear none, but I'm liking the funky reading glasses I picked out. They've got the whole librarian thing going on. I'm gonna get me one of those beaded necklace-type things to hold them so I won't lose them like my last ten pairs.
Sounds like a plan. Isn't Al renting a van? I can see it now. You, me, Matt, Gene, Stephen, Aaron, Al, Wayne and Ken arrive at the guys front door. Three lawyers alone should scare him into handing it over. The others will threaten to mess with his computers and amps. I'll drive.
Just one look at my crazed nerdiness ought to be enough.

Referring to the thread title, it would not be all that big of an upset if the Giants were to win. It would be nothing like Superbowl III, Colts vs. Jets.

I went a little nuts and took a step closer to my ultimate tt:
Nice. Are you working up to this as your ultimate tt? Careful, I heard that it has a bunch of Pioneer parts inside.

I really like the odysseys. But any bike battery I leave on a trickle charger when not being ridden for more than a couple days.
I like the Odysseys too. I have one in my Guzzi. Unfortunately they don't make a replacement for either this battery or the one in my 1988 Honda Hawk GT. So they'll both have Westco batteries. Westcos are sturdy and work well. They have AGM architecture. Anything is better than Yuasa.
-
Westco battery for Suzuki DRZ-400. I bought the bike used in July. Supposedly it had a new battery. Now it won't charge with a trickle charger. I hate Yuasa batteries.

I'd be up for any, depending on the mood of others, but the Social Distortion show has my vote.
Ditto, except that I'd vote for David Grisman. Of course, drinking beer would be ok too!

amb posted this in the DIY forum on HF this morning talking about it.

How were the amps being powered for these graphs, battery or AC? I assume that both were being powered the same way.
