My Mini3 built by Marshall has a gain of 3, plenty of volume at 9:30 o'clock position when using HD600, painful at 10:00.

You can't go wrong with either one. I've been listening to my y1 + mini3 for around a week now, while I can't tell exactly what it excels, it's even harder for me to tell what it doesn't do good. Edit: I think my mini3 is a 12V version(if there's such thing), since mine is powered by a 12V wallwart only and without charging circuit.

I thought about getting a D10 but I went with y1 + mini3 instead

I always found there's no equivalent class between Canons and Nikon. For example, 40/50D are actually above D90/80 but below D700/300. Same as D700/300, while they're a slight step about 40/50D, they're below 5D/1DmkII.
