meh @ n!. the real fun starts when you get to n!^n!^n!^n! generators. i did computations with those on my 10 year old thinkpad using qbasic. -

i ran into that problem with some longish bit cryptosystems mostly because i was bored one night and wanted to test the limits of computation of magma. i really had to use some weird keys to not get a response from magma. so now im morbidly curious as to what you are doing that wont get done in 60 seconds. strange group order calculations? -

surely you are aware of this but just in case... http://magma.maths.usyd.edu.au/calc/ also, i hate the guy who did the departmental presentation for sage when it came out so i hated sage by proxy. perhaps i should be a bit more rational in my approach to evaluating mathematical packages but what fun would that be -

Am I the only one that still uses mathematica? I feel alone. R is quite nice. Either of you use magma? Has the craziest number precision of any software I have seen. Can deal with numbers that makes C++ cry. Extremely pleasant to use for crypto stuff. -

laptop display issue

thinkpad t410. everything stock except added 8gb of ram about 6 months ago. if i lock the computer, the screen goes blank after a few minutes. when i move the mouse to bring the screen back up, it locks up the machine and the only thing i can do is to manually turn it off and turn it on again. i used to have a screen saver (the flying windows from windows 98) and disabled it 2 days ago thinking it might be causing issues. problem persisted. just came back from the gym and i had locked the screen when i left. pressed the caps lock key as it has a led indicator inside it to see whether it had already frozen or if bringing it back to life screws it up. the light lit up and then the machine froze. display did not come back. i THINK all this started when lenovo told me there was a driver update available for the video card and i clicked yes for it to be installed. i uninstalled that driver and installed the latest stable release from nvidia but still have the same issue. the video card is a nvs 3100m. any thoughts as to what might be going on?

That's super pimp shelly. When I first started teaching I wanted to convert all students to math majors. A few years later I'm content with hey you with the funny name. I don't hate math as much. Thanks. Hearing that is surprisingly pleasant. Nice of her to not waste the money on a pair of shoes. Nicer of you to promote kids her age to think critically. I toast you with a tall glass of lemonade.

i do shoot in raw. i was following the camera ev reading so far but all my shots seem underexposed so started going by what i was seeing on the screen. better results. will try and perhaps over expose shots a tad and pull it down in lightroom and see if i can get any better results. -

wasnt being critical for the sake of being critical. asked so i could improve if i was doing something in poor practice. if it is camera limitation then so be it. however if i can be doing anything different to get sharper images then id like to learn. -

for some reason i cant get shots as sharp as the one jeff posted a long time ago of that tram in nyc with my nex 5. iirc he mentioned using the kit lens even. dont know if it was post processed though. at 1:1 viewing, i see a lot of grain/noise in the photos - even the ones taken during the day at 200iso with 1/4000 sec shutter speeds. i can slow down the shutter to say 1/320s and stop down the lens but even then i see that grain. given that the zeiss 35mm is one of the sharpest lenses out there, id like to know if its something that i am doing wrong or whether it is just the nex. -
Damn it. Might not have as much money saved up by then. Was looking at apts in the area and the shitty ones are $1600 a month. Boca raton is pretty expensive too but 1600 gets a reasonable apt on the intercoastal. Any suggestions? Don't know if living at uc is an option. I doubt it would be any cheaper though. Perhaps...

A friend and myself are considering spending next summer in Berkeley, Ca working on mcat prep. The classes are held on the Berkeley campus for 12 weeks starting around may 20th. Could the locals or Cali residents offer any insights on the area, transportation ease, cost of living including rent and food etc? We have options of irvine, San Diego and a couple of other cities but berkeley seems to have the best teachers so I'm looking at that first. The cost of attendance is the same for all locations so I'd like to stick to Berkeley unless the cost of living is absurdly less in other cities. Gross estimates for 3 months would be very helpful in helping us plan how much to save over the next year. We wont really have much time outside of prep so nothing needs to be attributed to crazy outings. Once or twice perhaps but the emergency fund should take care of that. Thanks
