SRM-727II

Featured Replies

Untill now I read only severe negative posts for SRM-727II.

But I still can't find anywhere concrete opinion what's the problem with this Stax amp. I see most people own SRM-007tII, SRM-006t and even SRM-717 but not the 727 :)

How many of you had the opportunity to compare 727II with another amps?

If anyone needs help to burn in their SRM-727II, I think I can help

The 727 is supposed to be a similar design to the 717 with the output

stage dissipating about 3 times the power, therefore a more extended

high frequency and low frequency response. If it really sounds much

worse, there certainly could be a number of reasons, but i would be

surprised if on a casual basis anyone could tell the difference between

the two. Unless stax made some kind of horrible mistake.

I didn't compare them directly but I did compare them against a known reference and I preferred the 717. I found the 727 to be too warm and slow for my liking.

No one.

I don't mean a brief listening of 727II but a more detailed comparison.

I've noticed that one term listening can't give me the complete picture of one component. It depends on many conditions - technical, psychological, etc. Often the first impression is quite different from my final conclusion...

800-1000$ is the norm but you can find higher and lower as usual.

Hm, I'm eyeing that Omega II with 717 interest check on headfi. Has the right voltage, too, 230V. Do you think something like $2200 is a realistic offer?

I think thats a very realistic offer, though I've seen the for sale prices on used OII/amp combos vary wildly, from $2000 to $3000.

If the set is in great condition then that is a very fair price.

Cool, thanks guys. Excellent condition as far as I know with flight case and everything.

damn, i shoulda snapped up the 717 that an aussie was selling for AUD$700. too bad i was broke =(

wtf. surely he didn't let it go for $23.50...

Just bought the SR-007/717 package for $2300 shipped. Saw some pictures, perfect condition, really nice.

Gotta love the weak dollar. :D

Congrats!! It's tough to do better at that price. :)

Congrats on the new gears!

Hey, someone's gotta take advantage of it.

Something strange about the 727II :

Today I measured bias voltage 318V

In the specifications of 727II the bias voltage is shown as 580V so can anyone explain me why is it less?

You can't measure the bias at the front panel connector without

a real VTVM. Digital meters are way to low in impedance...

Dear Kevin,

we used a Yokogawa 7532 03 DMM, which measured ~380Vdc before the ballast resisitor (4.7Meg), falling to 312Vdc on the pin. OK, maybe the DMM drew some current when measuring bias voltage on the pin, but the voltage before the resistor comes from a low-impedance source, so the problem remains.

Something is definitely wrong with the bias circuit if you measure only

380 volts before the ballast resistor. Likely one of the 2 diodes.
