  1. Sitting in the airport on my way to Christchurch after spending 5 days in Queenstown. We are so far south here it doesn't get dark till 11pm and the sun is right back up at 4:30 in the morning. Right hand drive cars are an abomination. Some quick highlights: Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  4. 1000vct is somewhat high for a choke input supply. Remember the higher the raw voltage the more you have to burn up in the regulator. For +/-350 volts regulated, you want to have around +/-370 volts raw PS output at your minimum brown-out voltage. If the brown-out is 10% low, then that works out to 410 volts raw supply out at a nominal voltage (e.g. 120 volts US, 240 volts EU, 100 volts Japan). Figure another 10% losses in the choke, etc. and that works out to about 900 vct at 50 mA or better. Now if you use the KGBH supply which is cap input, then divide that by 1.4 to give around 640 vct, but you should also go with around 100 mA current or more. Those should give you an idea of the transformer size.

  5. You HAVE to have two 6.3 volt windings because the 6SN7GTA cathode sits at around -320 volts and the 12AT7 cathodes sit at around 0 volts and above. You cannot get away with one 6.3 volt winding, due to exceeding the filament-cathode ratings resulting in premature tube failure. This is one of the screw-ups in the SinglePower ES-1.

  6. You don't really need a 5v tap, I just used it to power the delay circuit. You do need two 6.3 volt windings (on KG's board he actually uses a 6.3 for the 6SN7GTA/B and 12 volt windings for the 12AT7s, so be aware of that. So the two gray boxes on the left are transformers (the smaller one is actually for the rectifier tube. The other boxes in the middle and right are chokes. You can substitute a solid state bridge rectifier for my hybrid rectifier, and you can eliminate the second pair of chokes. The basic KGBH supply will work also, just set it for +/-350 volts.

  7. Glad you stayed upright, Chris. 1 minor crash on yesterday's group ride and 1 pretty bad one on a group ride on the other side of town reported today. Sucks. On more positive news, hit 7500 miles today for the year. More importantly, I think I've done more meaningful rides thanks to having a power meter since July. And found a training partner who understands how to train properly (ie not hammer all day everyday) and has become a good friend and fellow beer-douche.

  8. Happy Holidays everyone.. Happy to report i have my CARBON up and running for some 6 hours now. I have set the current output to 17ma approx. I attached some digital thermometers to the Hottest part of the 2 heatsinks and monitored the temperature. 35 deg/c +/- 1 seems to be what they have settled at over the last couple of hours. I zeroed balance/offset to practically zero, the offset drifts a volt or two but much lower than any previous KGSSHV BUILDS. I have found that having 2 headphone outputs makes balance/offset adjustments easier. This amp drives my sr507/009's easily with plenty of range left on the volume control. Speaking of which i was thinking of a relay based volume control such as this http://diyclub.biz/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_248_85&products_id=410 does anyone have any experience with these? any advice on alternatives would be appreciated (i would rather something pre-assembled). I won't go into what it sounds like (i will leave that to those more capable than myself at explaining such things) But i will say i have put my other amps in the closet for now! this thing just sounds superb. As always many many thanks to KG and all those that make these projects possible. Any questions you have i shall do my best to answer them. Usual rules apply......If no Pictures.........Then it didn't happen!! So here you go. By the way i think i over-did it with the Heatsinks in the psu and could well have gotten away with a single heatsink for the HV +/-.

  9. There is some truth to your statement, Raffy, and Dan is obviously correct, but let's review the arc of this stupid issue: -Crappy posted a bunch of lingerie shots he took of his co-workers -Chris says he doesn't understand why med students would pose for these pics and then let Crappy post them publicly and wonders if Crappy is doing a fundraising calendar -Crappy unloads on Chris with his typical persecution-complex response raising all kinds of irrelevant straw-man arguments about double standards and such. Then he defends himself and his models on the basis of information Chris didn't have any chance of knowing instead of just making a rational response to Chris's reasonable comments and inquiry -I stew about it and eventually crack and post a self-righteous, half-crocked response dumping on Crappy for blowing everything out of proportion and claiming an attack where there really wasn't one, like he has many times -Crappy responds with a bunch more irrelevant claims but does not address or even acknowledge my main point repeated above -Shelly expresses her valid feeling that this type of photography is demeaning to women (my wife said the same when I vetted my response) and says that she would prefer not to have them posted in the thread without a spoiler tag -Crappy once again flies off the handle with claims of double standards (still not sure what two classes of people he refers to) and disdain for Shelly's feelings: he says he is insulted, that Shelly lacks courage, that she is just part of the mob attacking him (a legal US citizen, no less), that she is prudish, backward, unevolved, offensive, and stupid. He twists her simple statements on her own feelings about this kind of photography and honest statement that she would feel the same way whether the subjects were med students or strippers into a claim that the models are strippers. He also assumes that Shelly would chastise or belittle anyone who looked at strippers or porn, but she never said anything like that either. -Various other people chime in with positive thoughts on the photos and Crappy personally, and some wonder why I'm such an asshole to him on occasion. Other people here may not see the out of whack and misguided responses by Crappy the same way I do, and that is fine. I don't actually have a "beef" with him at all. I think Crappy would acknowledge that I was friendly and supportive of him when we first met and when Gene and I gave him a place to stay for free so he could attend CanJam Florida. Hell, I put up with his weird math trance and I almost threw Stevieo off the third floor balcony when I tried to steal Crappy's couch. I just have little patience for Crappy after years of sharing HF and HC space with him, and this whole issue is just another example. His obnoxious and unwarranted retorts to Chris and Shelly are prime examples of why he annoys me. Sorry for stirring the pot and keeping this going, but I thought I would explain myself for those who asked. Now I will attempt to return to live and let live vis a vis Crappy.

  10. Here is the board layout for one channel, wired point-to-point. It's pretty straightforward, signal flow from right to left with input on the right and output on the left. The other pic shows the output current load heat sinks - the wiring goes through the supporting shelf to the current load heatsinks bolted to the other side of the shelf. Other layouts are possible of course. The small heatsink on the left is for the output stage current sink, and is a bit marginal - a bigger heatsink would be better. Everything is soldered together which is good for electrical connectivity but not so good for repairs, but I was building it for myself rather than a commercial design where ability to make repairs easily is an important concern.
