  1. Wow, that's really impressive. Does Verizon=Fios? Cost? I wish they'd come to Chicago!
  2. Mmmmm. Makes me think of the Vonnegut work, Breakfast of Champions, I think, where he describes a race of aliens who show him their best, most obscene porn, and when he sits to watch it, it's a video of them slowly and luxuriously eating the best food you can imagine ... XXX right here!
  3. Thanks, boomana! Good to know. My main concern is if it gets too hot with no A/C. Looks like tomorrow's high is 83 - better than last week when it was in the 90's! I guess it could have been a lot worse. It turns out my area got almost 8 inches of rain that night. Here are some pics in my area - I guess I can live with some damp carpeting! Chicago-area residents try to recover from flooding - chicagotribune.com State of emergency declared in flooded Westchester - Chicago Breaking News Funny. A day after, and I have a bit more perspective. I guess these things happen ... two TRUE stories about my former office partner: He told me once that he drove off from a gas station with the hose still in his tank. He was driving down the street when another driver pulled up gesturing wildly to pull over. He got really irritated until he saw in the mirror what he had done. He drove back to the station and apologized profusely, while handing over the broken off hose. The station owner said not to worry about it, it happens all the time. Another time, he locked his last patient (yes, he's a fellow psychiatrist) in the office with no way out. Apparently, it was the last patient of the day, on a scheduled half day Saturday. She had gone to the bathroom, and he was in a rush to leave for a hair cut, so he wrapped up and left the office, locking all the doors (keyed from the inside only), set the alarm and left, while she was still in the bathroom. Our mail man was delivering mail when he saw a crazed and panicked woman gesturing in the window to help her get out. She set off the alarm motion detector, thus notifying the police of a break in. When they arrived, she screamed through the window that she didn't break in, she was a patient of the psychiatrist. The cop didn't believe her, but before bringing her to the station, she made him page my partner, who had settled into his scheduled hair cut. Annoyed, he finished his hair cut, answered his page, heard the story, couldn't believe it, but drove back to the office and finally confirmed the woman's story. I felt really bad for his poor patient, but I never laughed so hard in my life.
  4. I'm wearing these right now at the gym. They take a beating, sound decent, don't isolate, fold up to a smaller size, plus ... The price is right!
  5. Spent most of yesterday cleaning my office and preparing for life without electricity. Some nimrod truck driver tried to turn his semi around in our parking lot, neglected to notice the electric wires and phone lines overhead, and drove right through them. He took out the wires, the pole that secured them, and a bunch of bricks the pole was bolted to. Then a huge storm passed through Chicago, flooding many highways, houses, and of course, our office building. Luckily, I have great landlords, plus they run a business out of the same building. My side of the building was deemed safe (their's wasn't), but they can't repair the electricity unitl the wall is repaired. They plan to reroute the main breakers to my side of the building. It will be dry by Monday, but I have to plan for the likelihood of not having electricity for a few days. Good times ...
  6. This seems to have fixed it - thanks HPA!
  7. Billy, can I ask what you're paying Comcast, and your customer SVC experience? I'm still slugging along with ATT DSL and considered Comcast, but keep hearing horror stories about Comcast service here in Chicago. I have friends who say they jack up the price without telling you, then won't answer the phone when you call them to complain.
  8. Really? That's how I always ate it as a kid! But haven't had liverwurst since then ... Sounds good! Maybe I just need to grow up and eat like an adult.
  9. I use a Senn PX100 at the gym and am happy with it.
  10. Never mind. It was great all morning, but all afternoon, I keep having to go into the wifi settings to pick the network, then re-enter the password. Blah.
  11. Congrats, welcome to the club! I love the vnc function as well, and have stopped carrying my laptop because of it.
  12. Yup, the update helped a lot! The iPad locked right into the password protected Clear Spot wifi signal the first time, and has been on every time all morning! I didn't even have to enter the password - it must have remembered it from all the previous attempts and stored it as a key. Definitely worthwhile, if you're having wifi issues.
  13. I took a deep breath and updated to 3.2.1 last night. Would've skipped it, but I've had trouble auto reconnecting to my Clear Spot wifi. It won't reconnect after standby unless I leave the wifi unprotected. Weird, because the password protected wifi is fine with my old home router. I'll see later today if it helped.

    2010 RMAF/CJ@RMAF

Don't see it happening this year. But looks like a really cool event, I'd like to check it out some time!
  15. Damn, left my iPad at home today. I'm writing on paper, and scheduling and adding to contact info on the web via the computer! It feels so WEIRD! I'm jonesin', man! Somebody help me! Please!
  16. FYI, signal strength and download speeds have been wildly variable for the 4G. It can vary from 1GB/S to 5GB/S and signal strength meter from 2/10 to 10/10 from hour to hour, and from a change in position even several inches or a few feet. Test it well in your intended locations during the trial period. I found their coverage map to be pretty accurate so far. And I should say that the penalty for canceling early is only $40 (maybe in Chicago area only), so it's not bad at all.
  17. Clear mobile USB 4G internet for laptop and Clear Spot Wifi thingy for iPad
  18. Sounds like I need at least 3GB RAM for Parallels, maybe 4GB? I thought about the new mini, but all the cool new features will sit there unused in my office. This will be used to access the web, do word processing, and basic accounting. I went the cheapskate route and plan to use the savings to buy the stuff I need to keep my 'have no choice' legacy Windows programs.
  19. Just ordered a refurb mac mini! This will replace an old Pentium 4 Win XP PC that's just gotten too slow and frustrating. Basic specs:RFB MAC MINI 2.26/2X1G/160/SD/AP/BT-USA I'm wondering if my RAM memory is adequate? I will be using it in a very small one person office setting - word processing, web browsing, calendar, contacts, no video or photo editing. But I will also run Windows XP via Parallels for medical billing/accounting software and a VPN client to access a hospital network, that I must keep. Close enough to give it a go? Or should I avoid the frustration, and go up to 3 or 4 GB RAM right now? Thanks!
  20. Welcome to Johnsmith Music | Johnsmith Music My wife discovered him on NPR. Nice slow folk rock guy from Wisconsin, a thoughtful song writer about life experiences. He is one of our favorite unknowns. My favorite is 'Hole in the Clouds.' In fact, I feel like having a listen now!

  22. $1k back unexpectedly? That should help with the Sound Anchors, eh?
