Dinny, optics and VR on new and old Nikon 18-200 are exactly the same. The new one, as you mentioned, is supposed to have less zoom creep as well as nicer action on its zoom ring. It also has a zoom locking tab to keep it at 18mm.

Got rid of more than few trees/branches that fell in to our yard a while back. While I was at it, also sawed off few still-attached branches that were starting to get too big. On an unrelated note, I just realized that I've most likely left my filter pouch somewhere in Buffalo when I was there couple of week ago, along with two circular polarizers. Argh.

Basically what Shelly said, though same holds true for all other brands, and fastest available zooms are at 2.8. Oh and Shelly, have you bought 50 1.4g yet? I'd have thought about if I did t already have. 50 1.8g.
