If you can find a Northstar I would do it. I can honestly say I would pay Perrotta Consulting's demo price had I known it sounded this good.

Keep in mind I heard the K501 for a very brief time at a hifi audio store (probably spent about 20-30 minutes with it) so my statement might be romanticizing the K501 (most average to good headphones should sound good in a short audition, the K701 did to me). And it was playing out of a McIntosh integrated amp with Arcam CDP.

I've now sent them out to the new owner. I won't miss them in the slightest. I listened to them a lot before I made the decision to sell and they were unbelievably dull. They couldn't capture the emotion of the music like good headphones can. Also lacking in dynamics, and just boring to listen to. I did a few K1000 vs K701 comparisons and the K1000 was just so much more involving to listen to. Where's the K501 sound that I loved when I heard them in NYC? IMO the K501 are truly mini K1000s.

So did this happen when he made the announcement in the Chicago newspaper? Do you know who is in the new band?

Interesting findings, sort of mirrors mine. I don't care too much for the HF-1 and Melos. Surprisingly I sort of like the HD580/Melos, has a very fast detailed sound that suits the Senns.

I'm finding I'm not getting enough headroom on my Melos pot since the Northstar DAC outputs higher than my previous DAC. (And the Melos might have a pretty high gain) I like have a lot of room to play with on the volume knob, but right now I can't take it past 9 o' clock. Is there something I can do that won't degrade sound quality? This is only a problem with my HP-2, using the Melos as a preamp works fine.
