New Grado RS-2
I think just the fact that they are so obviously cost cutting makes them unattractive. In a vacuum they are decent looking headphones. Personally I find the GS-1000 to be a very attractive phone, as well it should be for a grand. Also the pair I briefly owned smelled fantastic. I really miss that smell.

yikes, the Bernstein set is even more expensive then the SF, and its redbook. I'll probably go with the SF.

SFS Mahler cycle
Cool, thanks humanflyz. I'm not a very good judge of performance quality at this point in my classical self-education. I'll look into the Bernstein set as well.

Link To SFS Store Anyone heard this? I've really been enjoying the Living Stereo / Fritz Reiner Mahler's 4th, and am thinking the above might be a great way to get the whole cycle in glorious SACD sound.

Last minute mini-meet
If this trend continues, all the RS-1s in production three years from now will be pink. "The Ladies' Grado" On a more on topic note, I have spent the past few evenings spinning Ryan Adams and Steely Dan vinyl, listening to my RS-1 with flat pads through the Dynahi. It truly is a fine headphone.

Recommend me some universal players
This is some good sense right here. Modded players are aplenty, and its not like I have a ton of DVD-As I need to listen to right at this moment.

Is the iMod a ripoff?
and if it was from ray the vinyl guys over at sh.tv would cream all over it.

lotta love for the 3910, seems to be a good bang for the buck player. but now that I have all this money back after selling a bunch of gear, I find myself reluctant to spend it! the paypal balance looks so nice. And then hungrych does an IC on his L3000s. Grrrrr...

ack, also the sacdmods 3910 has balanced outputs, if I ever decide to go that route.

yeah, APL being "the" name in mods makes his the most expensive. of course by all accounts they are superb units worthy of their asking price. The sacdmods is attractive because I possibly could at some point in the future go multichannel with it if the fancy ever struck me, plus its a grand cheaper. The Modwright is stereo only, but again I know I like Dan's work. Both companies stand behind their products by all accounts.

So I'm tinkering with the notion of dumping the 999es in favor of a player which also handles DVD-A and HDCD. HDCD capability is important since all of the new Grateful Dead Rhino releases are HDCD encoded, and I love the Grateful Dead. The most immediately obvious choice is a modded Denon 3910, since it is widely positively reviewed, and modded models can be had cheap on the gon. As we speak there is an sacdmods for 1300 and a modwright for 2300. I tend toward the Modwright since I'm already a fan of the Modwright house sound, and since it has that big ass overbuilt power supply (which, if I bought used, I would send in to get the tube rectification upgrade). I'm looking for recommendations beyond just modded units, they can be stock as well. $1000-3000 territory, thanks.

DCD on DSD
Very cool, thanks for this heads up. DCD is great.

Is the iMod a ripoff?
My biggest qualm with the high price of the iMod is that, in my experience and the experience of my immediate group of friends (which, given, hardly is a representative sample of all iPod users, but FWIW...), iPods tend to die quickly relative to other electronic gadgets. The first two iPods I owned died in the first year, but I sold my 2g Nano a month or so after I bought it. Now I have a 1g shuffle and it is great.

Review Gear You Haven't Heard
Also please note no one gets more enjoyment and information out of this forum then I do. Per your's and Earl's concerns in my FS thread I have abstained from creating any unnecessary humor in the on topic forums.
