After the creative camera I used to own it will take a lot to convince me to go anywhere near one of thier products. Bleh...

Inexpensive, but decent, CD transport with AES/EBU
philodox replied to philodox's topic in Home Source Components
I was thinking about it more and Pars and Nate are probably right... I should just use the adapter for now until I get a transport with true AES/EBU output. All a transformer would do is change the impedance, not the format, so whats the point if the DEQ already handles that... -

You know me, though I have no skill at such things, I have no problems asking others to do it for me. Dusty - That looks to be pretty overkill for what I'd use it for. What do they usually go for second hand? -

Thanks for the tip Pars, I can use that as a temporary solution. -

You've heard it before? That would probably be my first choice. I'll have to run it by Renato and see what he thinks. -

Already have it, a Behringer DEQ2496... more of a DIY project really. I've been interested in the AKM dac chips, so wanted to try a product that uses them. I figure that if I like it well enough stock I may look into building a second box psu, swapping the dac chips with AK4396's, zapfilter output, etc. I've also been very curious about digital EQ's and figure the worst case scenario is that I put it in my closet until I have a serious speaker rig and use it for room corrections. Haven't heard the beast yet though of course, since I don't have my transit and I am an idiot. [thought the E5 had AES/EBU] -

Good to know. Not sure if I have room in there for another transformer, but at least I know it is possible. That looks like a good option, though it means an extra cable added to my Signal Cable order. Damn. I think I saw that FS post as well, but it was before I knew about my dilemma. I doubt I would sell the E5, but who knows. -

Thanks Salty, I was considering that. $400 isn't bad if I can find someone to build it for me. Nate - The DAC that I want to use with it has one AES/EBU in and one optical in. The optical in is going to be used by the M-Audio transit I just picked up, so I wanted to use the AES/EBU for my CD player. Another option would be to add AES/EBU to the Eastsound somehow. Would that be possible/feasible? -

Hi all, I made a *slight* mistake in thinking that my Eastsound has an AES/EBU connection. Wondering if anyone has any inexpensive, but good suggestions for a dedicated CD transport [or CD player] with AES/EBU. The cheaper the better, though I don't want something that is going to fall apart on me. Thanks in advance, Jay -
No, because the context is completely different.

It depends on how your head is big. I have a huge head, but its not exceedingly wide... so AKG fits like a glove for me.
-
LOL, my thoughts exactly.

Huh? I said I have no problem being corrected when I am wrong. This implies that Nate corrected me and I WAS WRONG. Sheesh. Dude, an electronic device is balanced if it has both phases of each channel amplified. Stop. A headphone, by our definition, is considered balanced if it has been recabled in order to be driven balanced on a balanced amplifier. Please see above. I can't believe you are telling me to speak clearly. If it is a stereo amp, wouldn't the ground most likely be common? I know you can't tie the grounds together on tripath based amps, but those are special cases.

Some power cables from Reks and finally a M-Audio Transit.

Did you read my reply to Nate? I think I pretty clearly stated that "I have always been told that having it connected at one end is proper". I also admitted that I was wrong. If anyone is being a snippy whiney bitch, it is you. NYAH In addition, there are obviously times when both configurations would be preferable depending on the grounding scheme of the two devices that are being connected. I read that blurb at the end and they are talking about something completely different. Yep, I was agreeing with you. It will happen sometimes. Well, yeah, that would be what I'm arguing with you about. You, for some reason, are applying theory behind connecting two balanced devices to transducers which doesn't really make sense. I don't owe you shit, and I'm not trying to bully anyone. Of course not. If I'm included in your 'they', you haven't been paying attention.
-
Good to know. I have no problem being corrected when I'm wrong. I've always been told that one side being connected was the way to go, but I suppose it really does depend on the two devices you are connecting and how their grounding is setup.

Happy Birthday Jay!!! Hydrocity - that post was inspiring.

XLR cables are supposed to have the ground only connected at one end. Having them connected at both ends does not make them true balanced, it makes them poorly designed. People call headphones that have been recabled to accept + and - for each driver "balanced headphones". Get over it. No, you don't call speakers balanced speakers, because there is no recabling needed. If the drivers are being driven by a 4 channel amplifier, the system is effectively balanced as far as I and everyone but you use the term. There is no difference between speakers or headphones in this regard. BTW. A dual monoblock is the same as one stereo amplifier... so no, that is not balanced. To go balanced with monoblocks you would need 4 of them. Like you said before, you are being pedantic. The language we use in this hobby is basically created by us, so you can't go around telling everyone they are saying things wrong. That is Reks' job! [though at least he sticks to the English language proper]

Wow, thanks for the detailed info Kevin. What is your take on balanced headphones being faux-balanced?

Oh man... that is too much.

LOL, that's about it.

Lots of cool gear, but your place... man, I'm jealous!

You're either talking over my head or through your ass. Can we get KG in here to clarify or something?
