  1. I agree with the Mapletree recommendation- it was one of my favorites when I listened to it at a meet. Granted, that was off a Resolution Opus, which skews things, but at least it doesn't crap on the sound like the RSA upper-midrange glare. Can't tell you what soundstage was like, but tonality was great.
  2. Well, currently on this worthless POS The author/my prof for this class is insane. Just off-the-wall-crazy. Haven't learned anything because she talks to us like we're in middle school, but the class is easy enough I guess. Just finished
  3. Now that we're back to sweet 300B amps, anyone ever hear about or have opinions on Border Patrol? It looks like it'd get along well with the folks here *cough aerius cough*, but who knows. I like the whole power supply-first approach and especially the fact that its a well-finished "exotic" amp that doesn't look like total ass. I can't stand the whole "I'm better because my equipment looks shittier" race- if you're going to live with something long term, there's nothing wrong with investing in cosmetics /rant. Anyway, the stuff looks sweet on paper and isn't really talked about. Haven't heard it yet, but options are always good. http://www.borderpatrol.net
  4. Any thoughts on how the Modwright compares to the Dragon?
  5. There's a review of the S30 on Audiogon/Audioasylum...since its based off of a DNM design, try searching for reviews on those amps too to get an idea of the "house sound". I haven't seen anything on the XS, sorry.
  6. You're right though , it does help the fanboi issue a bit. I guess I was trying to say that "vendor-driven" can have benefits, as long as its transparent *cough*.
  7. I actually like a lot of the vendor-driven aspect of Audiocircle, because a.) you get a different vendor bias than Audiogon/Asylum, b.) you get access to more custom/down-to-earth/direct-sale vendors that have cool stuff, and c.) you see up-and-coming stuff in progress, like the Modwright Transporter. My main point was the sheep-like defense of the vendor/knee-jerk bash of the OP. I don't really mind the vendor's behavior that much, but the way these people just piled on the OP for what could be a reasonable, understandable complaint is scary. Good news is that one of the "Facilitators" sees this too.
  8. I stumbled across this thread on Audiocircle- http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/index.php?topic=44200.0 Any thoughts? I'm not that bothered by the initial complaint/premise of the thread, but the way so many people bashed the OP for calling out this behavior seriously disturbs me. Echoes of another place? (at least this time the mods aren't into it- visibily, anyway)
  9. The HP series button is cool, but at least they could *try* to match the color between the wood button and the cups for the RS series. [/OCD]
  10. I hated the Grado button, but this looks like crap too...I like the old font, I guess. Maybe they're changing the naming scheme to match the GS1000 (no dash)?

    Hey

Damn straight I am Where from? I'm from Meriden.

    Hey

By "the poweramp" I mean the Moscode I mentioned before, which is a really sweet hybrid I found over at Audiocircle. You barely ever find it used, but the company had some B-stock left. I'm going with just the Northstar DAC for now, I guess I'll wait for a good deal on Audiogon. It's my way of finding a transport-less Resolution Opus 21 , or trying to come close to that. I'll see how DRC and a Squeezebox-only transport go, and then I'll either keep the setup, actually get an Opus 21 (loved it at the Boston meet), or maybe wait for a Modwright tubed-output Transporter.

    Hey

Yeah, thats me. The Boston meet was fun , I definitely remember meeting you there. I should clarify, I don't have the Northstar yet, it's just what I'm planning on getting- I'm working on paying off a demo model of the poweramp first. I basically went with it because of you and Reks, along with a couple of other impressions dug up elsewhere. Is there anyone here who calls everything a "coke"?

    Hey

I used to do a SACDMods 9100ES -> MPX3 SE -> HD650, not sure if that'll be recognizeable or not. I'm in the middle of going to SB3 -> Northstar M192 -> Moscode 401HR -> North Acoustics Kitty Kat for speakers, with the Inguz Slimserver plugin plus Acourate or something else for room correction. Right now I have a pair of Merlin TSMs and a Tact integrated, which was a mistake. Horribly sterile- which I kinda knew, but wanted to confirm my sonic preferences. tTW, Dusty Chalk, the East Coast roxors , but I really didn't have any idea how awesome Chicago was, nor does anyone I know back home. It's unfortunate. Still, I find the Midwest inferiority complex amusing sometimes , and its soda, not pop.

    Hey

Yeah, its pretty sweet. Ironically, I applied here kinda casually, not having a clue exactly how awesome NU and Chicago are (east coast bias FTL). Getting rejected from Stanford is one of the best turns of luck I've had . What sucks is I'm halfway through already... Glad to hear you didn't make that jump. I had this painfully hilarious over-the-top PM from Ray a month or two ago, wondering why I hadn't stopped by his place to visit. Would've made a great head-case present I think, but too bad I deleted it Thanks for all the greetings
  17. This thread is genius. I've never gotten the cry of "you're not a real music lover unless you buy tons of music *nose in air*"- I'll literally listen to one disc for a week or two. I love getting to know an album inside and out. Maybe that's because I basically only had 6 albums to listen to over the course of middle school, so that's how I learned to listen. Pat Metheny- Secret Story My desert island disc. A perfect blend of orchestra and Metheny's jazz/world music-y feel, so basically two of my favorites mixed into one. Lushly recorded, emotional, with some really funky stuff here and there. I absolutely hated it the first time I played it John Williams- Return of the Jedi SE soundtrack, disc 2 Mostly a personal thing, I kind of poured myself into it when I was going through really rough family stuff in middle school, so yeah. Miles Davis- Kind of Blue First ever jazz album, basically memorized it. Dave Matthews Band- Live at Red Rocks My sister and I bonded over this when I was little, it was my first introduction to any sort of pop/rock-ish music. She's 10 years older than me, so I didn't get to see her that much, so I hung on to what I managed to get. Barenaked Ladies- Rock Spectacle Another early music/sister-bonding experience, and pretty much the best BNL album ever. I swear I hear my mom calling my name during one little bit of "Brian Wilson". There are probably others, but those really stick with me.

    Hey

So, bored at work, I stumbled across head-case from another link. I've been a part of that other site, but kinda trailed off for a while...thought it was because I'm not really doing headphones anymore. More like everyone worth paying attention to ran over here. I'll probably just lurk anyway, but thought I might as well pop in and say hi. And damn, I was so oblivious to what was going on over there. Me = teh dumb.
