I think you also have to plug it in and press play

I know how you feel about it, Birgir. But at some point in time, Colin actually agreed with me about the SR007 being somewhat dark. I agree that "hey look at me" treble is obnoxious, but I guess I just have more tolerance for treble. I wouldn't mind having an SR007, though... just would mean I'd have to bring the treble up a bit somewhere else in the audio chain.
-
Definitely a much appreciated comparison. Although, just wondering, how did you acquire an Airbow? Through some Japanese auction through some deputy service? Edit 2: Reading comprehension fail. You borrowed it from a friend, nvm. Since I'm in the camp that doesn't mind my treble a little hot, the 404 LE might just be the headphone I'm looking for, depending on how hard it is to find an Airbow. Edit: :o:o

All this talk of cheap used HR824s is making me want to get a pair. But I have no room for speakers (no real desktop to even speak of), little money, and little use for them since I just don't have time for extended listening sessions anymore. My time is almost always better spent practicing... Meanwhile, I passed along all the great info I got from this thread and the intarwebs and am now waiting for a response/to see if she makes a decision. Thanks, guys.

Asr, someone is selling a pair of SR-X MkIII for what I think is a good price on HF and I just so happen to have a pair of Alpha Pro Excellent drivers laying around. Not only that, luvdunhill offered to send me some Koss ribbon cable, which ain't the best but better than the crappy cloth cables of ye olden Staxen. Just say the word and I'll get right on making some form of SR-X Pro if you're interested in buying. If not, I might just make it for myself at my leisure. And then possibly end up with two, since I bought the materials to make another from Carl awhile back.

I hate how I read GR8 as "grate" every time. Maybe Grado is telling us something about their sound signature.

I agree on the Eagle and the Grundig but not on any of the Yamahas, regardless of whether or not they're being worn, including the YH1000, which is way too gadgety. The HP50 was the main headphone I thought of when I said both bland and hideous. The T30 and T50, like the old T20 and T10, look very utilitarian to the point of being kind of bland. There are very few truly good looking orthos, in my opinion (SS100, DAC's Grundig, maybe one or two others). Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I hear the Apogee Duet is pretty good for needle drops. Honestly, you've already experienced almost every type of headphone there is - Grado, IEM, bass cannon farty thing, closed AT - and should know what you like and dislike about them. Use that information to formulate your own opinions and figure out what kind of sound you'd like, instead of asking for us to randomly pick at straws and throw some headphone model names around.

Thanks for the offer, and I just might take you up on it. I think that's enough to finally push me to email Carl about the Stax stuff I bought from him and get started on building an SR-5 Pro or SR-X Pro. These Alpha Pro Excellent drivers I bought from Birgir have just been sitting in my closet for half a year... but, frankly, I've been busy as hell for half a year, as well. And it just so happens I need to prepare some Paganini Caprices and Ysaye Sonatas right about now.
-
Does this mean you stroke your one-eyed audio trouser snake every so often to us and/or our orthos? But I admit, most orthos do look either bland or hideous. Or both, somehow. Sansui SS-100 being the main exception I can think of, right now.

I actually did this mod using electrical tape on my ATH-702 120R SFI pads which are basically just open cell foam and it helped a bit, but I still need to acquire some leather to really keep in the bass. So this trick may be just what you need.
-
I also prefer bright and calm to thunderous bass that's overblown. However, you know the next step is to find a compromise between the stock pads and the 205 pads... which may involve making some pads, or tweaking the 205 pads. Glad you're enjoying the LCD-1 so much. When I get back in the headphone hobby, I'm definitely going to buy a new ortho, or at least a pair of new ortho drivers. How does the bass compare to the HD580's, and how is treble extension (which everyone knows I love, by now)? Edit: ^

Cool, thanks. I sent in requests for price quotes for the MR5 and HR624 at Northern Sound and Light, which have been known to be pretty cheap, at least for headphones.
-
I looked up some reviews and I think the consensus is the Bx8a Deluxe is bass heavy and doesn't have built-in EQ adjustments, but might still be a decent option. And I was waiting for someone to post something way over budget... Harbeths sure look nice.
-
I wonder if there's an easy way to make a ribbon cable for 'stats using that teflon hookup wire. If there is, I definitely need to buy some.
-
Nice. Thanks, Stretch I'd ask if the MR8 is worth paying extra for, but I'm thinking it's a bit too big and too heavy for her use, anyway. I've done some research and also saw the Yamaha HS50M as the main competitor, but lots of people say it needs bass/a subwoofer.

I have a friend who is looking for good active monitors, under $400 or so, and mostly used in a near-field/desktop setup. Coming more from the pro audio (mixing and post-production) side than the audiophile side, so as flat a frequency response as possible would be nice. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance. In case anyone cares, I'll also be sending along my modded Fostex T20v2 and T40v1 to this friend on indefinite loan to see if they're up to the task of being good studio headphones. I'm sad to say that I really don't listen to headphones very much, anymore, otherwise you'd have to pry the T40 off my cold, dead hands.
-
Ah, thanks for this. I remembered wrong, then. I haven't heard an SR-X but the SR-5 Gold certainly is not treble tilted at all, in my experience. Very mids-oriented with a bit of a treble roll-off, and a decently fat mid-bass that doesn't extend much past that.
-
The Lambda Sigs are very treble tilted but also very forward. I like to think of them as kind of a Gradoish sound, but a lot better because it's Stax. So not like what I think the Qualias are like, in terms of headstage. I imagine the 4070 also is treble tilted but is also forward due to its monitor and closed qualities. Perhaps the 404 Limited that almost no one has heard yet? All of the Lambdas have more treble than the Omega 2, just for reference. And I suggest again that if you like the SR-X MkIII so much, the next logical step can only be the SR-X Pro, if you can ever find one. I'm still trying to build one, myself. Waiting on Carl.

The latest version, I'm pretty sure, with the ribbon cord that's like 20 feet long and the PS2 transformer box with the fuses and the switch and stuff. Not sure which bias voltage that is, but I'm hoping for more. Because moar is better.
-
Hay guys, what's up in this thread? Do you guys think I should show my Jecklin Float Electrostats to others? They have large bias and a loooong cord.
-
Dammit, need to message Carl to send me Stax stuff I bought from him like half a year ago. Perhaps need to message self to remind self to message Carl... and also need to stop being busy.
-
Damn, I should've known something like that already existed. DAC, I didn't know you also used the 0404 USB. The amp really isn't that good, but the DAC is decent, at least. Try hooking it up to your X-Can. Icarium's description of the bass does make it sound like it just needs a bit of damping to get it to tighten up a little, but you may not appreciate a leaner bass.

Isn't markl that dude who sold his first R10 to get his business modding Denons off the ground and then it turns out he had another R10 all along?
