D2000 ain't even a woody... gotta upgrade to a real one, a la D5000 or D7000, my friend.
-
A rather obvious and possibly overplayed song, but I'll say it anyway: Bohemian Rhapsody. I also have a soft spot for long well-done songs like PF's Echoes and Atom Heart Mother and PT's Anesthetize.

Seems like everything in this thread is about the JH13 but I'm just a poor young'un, so anyone have impressions on the JH5? Specifically on bass and treble extension, but anything else is also appreciated. Also, is UE the only company to have the ambient feature for reduced attenuation?
-
The Sigs definitely have more treble than the Pros. I don't think extension is what hurts your ears... at least it shouldn't. I've heard the ESP950 as well and think that it has an acceptable level of treble stock, but wouldn't mind just a smidgen more. I would need a couple hours with it in my own system to figure out exactly what about it I find unnatural sounding, though. Anyway, DAC, moar impressions, please! And/or modding. And/or pics of the bare driver. Clear would be interesting.

I have yet to experience a Stax with too much treble energy, and I've even heard a Lambda Sig. I hope your minor issues have something to do with there being too much treble for you. And I do like my bass tight and fast.
-
In other words, you won't. It has a Wolfson DAC, btw, the WM8350.

The older ones aren't. Since Microsoft has always been big on backwards-compatibility hopefully they will make the new firmware for non-touchscreen models. Now I'm waiting for Apple to revise its iPod Touch at around the same time of the HD's launch date. Some 3GS stuff is most likely going to trickle down into it. It never ends...

I'm definitely liking the pricing, and will now probably go for the 32GB model. What's weird, though, is the fact that the 16GB is only in black (which I prefer) and the 32GB is only in platinum. That's what Amazon makes it seem like, anyway.
-
Cool, you bought one. Do post impressions when you get it; I could be wrong about the frame. I assume you may try making your own pads to eek out all the bass you want, since I doubt the velours are keeping everything in.
-
Oops, my bad. 320 would make a lot more sense. Another thing to consider is the HD Radio receiver, which I'm quite interested in. Better sound quality than FM, free, and certainly helps when you only have 16GB or 32GB to work with in storage space. You can also tag the songs you hear and like for later purchase. I know I made plenty use of the radio function on my 30GB Zune when I was still regularly using it... it had really great reception. And I shall now shut up about the HD until it comes out.

To anyone who has event a mild interest and ability in DIY, I recommend just buying a set of drivers and picking a better headphone frame to put them in. No offense to Audeze but the frame they're using looks really cheap and the pads in that picture look like they're rotting and about to fail apart. I doubt the full potential of the drivers is being delivered due to a junk frame and pads and lack of ortho mods. If the LCD-1 drivers only extend to 16kHz I'll be very disappointed, but I highly doubt this is the case. The drivers probably aren't damped at all and there probably isn't a reflex dot in place, which would explain the high frequency roll-off inherent in all stock orthos I have encountered. Audeze claim a usable extension to 50kHz, which I also doubt is the case...

It's widescreen aspect ratio, 16:9. The Touch's is 480 x 360. So when you're watching movies it's the same size, but is otherwise smaller. I think it's reasonable, for a smaller form factor as well. And yeah, it outputs 720p. A pic of its internal memory, WM8350, and headphone out:

I admit a lot of my interest is due to the possible trade-up offer by Microsoft and the fact that everyone and their mother has an iPod (for good reason, I admit). The Zune software wasn't too terrible for me and thankfully not bloated like iTunes, although some things were extremely frustrating, like being unable to rename tracks/artists and even the occasional inability for the Zune database to recognize albums for the tracks I uploaded. It's true that I could just jailbreak an iPod Touch, I suppose. The screen is a 3.3" OLED, 480 x 272 pixels, which is much improved from previous models, and it seems the UI on the Zune itself is nice and easy to use. Also, nVidia's Tegra chip is in there, which both makes the Zune faster than the Touch and intelligently conservative with battery usage as well. Microsoft has to make a product better than the iPod Touch to even make a small dent in Apple's sales, and I think it's certainly trying very hard to achieve that.
-
Anyone else can't wait for the Zune HD to come out? I've been wanting a portable web browser with music/video playing capabilities without having to use iTunes for a long time. In case people don't know what it is, it's like an iPod Touch, with less/crappier apps, at least initially, but has HD radio and a better screen. Prices are estimated to be around 250 for the base 16 gig model and maybe 100 more for the 32 gig version. There's rumors about a trade-up program Microsoft might be setting up where you can trade your old Zunes for credit for new ones. I'd love for that to come to fruition since I have an old 30GB I don't use much anymore.

I like how bald the guy is. The headpad is obscuring my view of its shiny glory. I was thinking about converting my SR-5 Gold into a Pro version, but I got sidetracked by various things and I let someone borrow my soldering station, in the meanwhile. After 3 months, I still have not gotten it back from him. Interestingly, this was around the same time I bought some stuff around Carl which I also still have yet to receive. If I do decide to go through with the Pro conversion, I'll probably have to buy a pro bias ribbon cable from somewhere, though.

Two comments: 1) You need to try an SR-X Pro 2) I need to try an AD2000 ... 3) Time for my monthly/bimonthly PM to Carl for some Stax goodies

Note to self: take picture of self wearing eye-blindingly sexy Jecklin Float Electrostatics to post here.
-
If by interesting you mean dead sexy, I agree. At least with the amazing pics DAC took on his fancy DSLR.

Actually looks semi-decent in there, albeit somewhat cramped. Yama's quoted me $100 for an entire Lambda (SR-202) arc assembly when I asked over a year ago.
-
Are those just modified SR-3 drivers or something? Looks cool, but I already have SFIs that need proper housings.
-
Might as well buy a pair and see how they sound first. Certainly a rarity, at least in the US (actually, I haven't seen any here). But I doubt Stax did any extensive thinking and design with the cups like they did with the 4070. I could be wrong...
-
Now if they could use the BA-K-(N)-47 as one of them bacon blowtorch thangs that burn through sheet metal, I'd be impressed.
-
SR-50 is the crazy closed Stax electret, right? Why exactly would you want something like that, and couldn't you use some other fosterphone for the same purpose? You'd still have to recable since electrets are only 4 pin. Yeah, Carl is busy with real life. I bought some Stax stuff from him the last time we all wondered where he was and he's still taking his sweet time. I sent him an email a few days ago. I just hope the stuff gets here before summer ends so I have some time to fix up some stuff.
-
You're right. I'm beginning to think no one outside of the Stax crazies know the differences between all the Lambda variants.
