Was offered a dream one year research position with my absolute favorite professor in all of med school. The man is close to retirement as a practicing neurologist so this is one of the last year's he is taking on students. He can tell you which page any neurological disorder is on in the neurology bible and can act it out on cue but more importantly is one of the most humble and down to earth people I have ever met. It's a research position on paper but I basically would be an apprenticed to him and shadow him during any patient interactions in his office and in hospitals. Instead of MAYBE (he is so popular, his office does a lottery for students every month) doing a one month rotation with him in my third year, I get to take a year off after taking my first boards and spend an entire year with him. The fellowship comes with a tuition waiver for the last two years of med school so that's a huge help but most important of all, he wears scrubs every day and has no dress code for students rotating through his office! Says he can't think unless he is comfortable. He asked me to think about it over the next week and get back to him. I told him I was taking the spot immediately. There was nothing to think about to which he replied, "you kids get more impatient every year. Im not giving you the answers to the licensing exam, you know." Hooray!

Received a video of snow outside my dad's apartment in NJ. Sent them a video of the weather outside my apartment in South Florida. Don't think I'll share that video here. Stay safe and warm everyone.

Anova will be having a sale around Valentine's Day. Shall wait the 3 weeks. Then join the brotherhood. Looking forward to better results.

I don't think a bite from someone else's plate counts. There was too much sauce. I couldn't taste the egg. Also, in trying to season my pan, this keeps happening. And I don't know how to get it to be a nice even finish. The pan I seasoned at Julies place is pretty much perfect. Nothing sticks to it. Mine on the other hand doesn't seem to want to cook eggs without taking half of them. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

Never had poached eggs. Lots of things to try. My chicken has been drying out of late. I found myself cutting a perfectly good breast in half so it is slimmer and cooks more evenly but that has made it chewier. I guess I could stick it in the oven and then sear it but then I wouldn't be able to justify a new toy

I looked at the price trends for searzall and it's never really been discounted so going to just wait to buy it when I buy the anova circulator. Although, I saw it could be used for eggs. I love fried eggs but hate overcooking them when I flip them for the whites to get cooked. I think the searzall will come in very handy for that.

For anyone else looking, the TS8000 torch attachment is some 50% off on amazon right now. Camelcamelcamel shows it to be the lowest price its ever been so I grabbed one just now. Will probably wait for the anova to come up on sale sometime in the near future.

Damnit guys. Had I not just spent $1300 on board exams I need to take this summer, I would have already pulled the trigger. I guess I need a blowtorch apparatus with the searzall attachment as well. Could use my trusty cast iron pan but living in an apartment with a very finicky fire alarm and a roommate who freaks out when I even stir fry stuff these days, I think the searzall is a must with the sous vide. Of course, that could just be my way of rationalizing it. Will sleep on it and discuss with Julie tomorrow and assess whether its a need or a desire. She is a lot better at making rational decisions. Even though that might not be the HC way of doing things =/

Are there any deals for sous vide cookers? There seem to be a lot of options... =/ Would love to try it but seems like a steep(ish) price of entry. Does anyone besides Colin use it enough to where they can justify the cost of admission?

I have had the same one suit since 11th grade in high schools that I purchased From JCP I think. Can probably count the number of times I've worn it on my fingers and toes. Pretty sure my choice of residency will likely take attire into account as well "Let your resume do the talking. If some place doesn't hire you or admit you because of the clothes you are wearing regardless of your academic accomplishments, then you don't want to be there anyways." - grandma.

Breakfast this morning at Ally's Comfort Cafe. Julie and I shared a tiramisu pancake and I had a Monte Cristo sandwich. She had already devoured into her lamb gyro before I got a chance for a picture.

Wasn't my cup of tea. Actually liked the opening act more - could hear her words. Unless you knew the words to the songs already, Garth is near incomprehensible. Julie danced the entire time so I am happy she had a good time. I had the ety ear plugs. Purchased them right before the Ben Howard show last year and man were they a life saver. We were in the highest row possible perpendicular to the stage so none of the speaker arrays were pointed directly at us. It was loud. But given the location and the ear plugs, it was still not as loud as the Ben Howard show at the Filmore (a lot more intimate) which was a little too loud. All in all, I didn't walk out with a headache or any pain in my ears so am very pleased with how well the ear plugs performed. Did pull them out during the concert once and realized how freaking loud it was without them. No signs of tinnitus yet. Hopefully it doesn't crop up once all the ambient noise goes away for the night. Going to try to get Dave Matthews tickets for the next live show. Only seen 2 concerts so far but I think Dave live would be something both of us would enjoy a lot more.

Julie got two tickets from work to a garth Brooks concert. Never heard country music before but she is a big fan so I tagged along. So far it's not too loud. But I doubt it will be this volume for much longer. I don't know where anyone else in the arena is though. Everyone is camouflaged quite well...

That's fine. Your suggestion for Kat prompted my post. As a sysadmin, I assume you know what you are doing when it comes to (relatively) transparent and open protocols. Wanted to make sure Shelly knew there were alternatives.

Please avoid public trackers if you do wish to go the route. There are private trackers that have some requirements but are also relatively safer to use.

Julie trying to hang herself with Robyn's hair on New Year's eve. Not a fancy picture but especially dear to me because Robyn wasn't doing the infuriating duck face or fake smiling or whatever stupid crap teenagers do these days when taking a photo. That and I really liked the read background for some reason - the particular shade of red looked very pleasing to my eye. -

There might be some truth to it. We were dressed in dinosaur t shirts with math jokes on them but once Julie told the lady to stop patronizing me when it came to the math as I had a PhD in it, the color from her face drained and she stopped arguing with my calculations. They were already aware that I was in med school. In retrospect, when I was leading my civic last year around this same time, we talked the dealership down from 13500 to 7700 total cost of ownership for 3 years and I was treated with respect. No funny business was done other than the usual back and forth to arrive at a price. For Julies car the lady kept pointing to the monthly payments but refused to address how we were paying more than the agreed upon price as a total cost after the loan period. The differential was just a few dollars here and there. It was $3854 first. Then $2900. And progressively went down to $0 eventually when I got up from my chair. Magically all the math suddenly made sense to her and she triumphantly stated, "oh this is what you were asking for. You should have said that from the beginning!!!" "At the end of the loan period I am not going to pay a cent more than $17000 for this car. How you structure the monthly payments or taxes and fees is immaterial to me." Didn't think that was too dense a statement for a financial consultant to follow.

Julie needed a car pretty badly - the old one was about to fall apart any day. For the last 5 days I had been traveling between some 12 dealerships all of whom promised me prices on cars on the phone and ended up coming up with a significantly higher price by the time we were done talking. Today we walked in with a truecar.com certificate hoping to make matters simple. Turned out the dealer didn't accept those. Using that as a starting point, we negotiated and agreed upon a price that was fair (not great). We shook hands on it, Julie signed the appropriate papers and then we waited 4 hours to speak with the finance people. This was Julie while we waited. We walk in the door to the finance lady's office and she is the happy funny person making jokes left and right. Then she tried to pull fast ones on me saying that I didn't understand the math (lol) and was making simple errors none of which she could explain. The price that was on the computer was $3800 higher than what we signed. I politely said that no way in hell was I paying more than the sticker price for the car. On top of that they were charging a 5.69% interest for the financing of the car even though Julie qualified for 0%. We were told that we could either get the 0% interest or we could get the price discounted. Again, I was told that the arithmetic was over my head and that I didn't understand financial math. This was Julie when the lady left the room to go grab her boss because I refused to continue talking to her. PS. The boss "restructured" the deal as a favor to us and ended up with a price that was $500 more than what was agreed upon, forced me to sign it saying that there were 5 other customers waiting to pay for their cars. I calmly got up and said, "you are more than welcome to take them. I am sorry to have taken your time. I will think about your offer and get back to you in a few days." He circled the number we had agreed upon, wrote down 0% next to it and smashed the pen into my hand. I signed it. Julie walked out with keys to a brand new fully equipped 2016 Toyota Corolla LE. Once we got out of the dealership This was the first time in her life she was driving a brand new car and she more than deserves it.
