  1. Just a bit more information since I didn't consider nearly enough earlier: - I'm running a desktop and will be connecting via cable. - I do need solid wireless for my roommate's pc and gatherings at our place. LAN's might be a possibility with at least half a dozen pc's on the wireless connection. - No filesharing, at least not at the moment. My friend does a lot of movie ripping and it would be easier for me to grab his files through the connection, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. - Squeezebox is a possibility. - Not sure if my roommate's lappy is N, I would guess not based on the rest of specs of it. ~~~ I did check the Airport and yeah, the cost is a bit much. I was looking for under $100 ideally. Thanks much for the help guys, really appreciate it.
  2. Heh, I'm dumb. Thanks Dan, I'll check that one out.
  3. Ah sorry, I'm on PC. No Airport for me. No idea if this helps, but the University's connection got insane again, I speedtested yesterday @ 90MB/s DL and 40MB/s UL. Would only an N-capable router be able to take full advantage of this much bandwidth?
  4. Just looking for a few suggestions on what sort of router I should go for, including brand, type (G, N, etc.), whatever else. I must be honest and say that networking is a weak point for me and I don't know a heck of a lot about routers in general, but I just need something for here at the apartment that will give me multiple ethernet ports and a solid wireless connection for my roommate's lappy. Thanks folks.
  5. Rock on Laine. Have a great day .
  6. Congrats elephas and thanks for keeping the impressions coming, not that I'm likely to ever own any of the gear you are commenting on .
  7. Thanks for the impressions Grahame . Sounds like a ballin' meet, keep the impressions coming.
  8. I am interested but have never done a fantasy league before, so if you guys are ok with having at least one newb in then I'm game.
  9. First post with my 10 minute old 16gb 3GS . I'm sure I will be very active in this thread for some time to come.
  10. Happy birfday Todd, you da man.
  11. Thanks bro . Thanks for the advice, yes I do want to take some form of lessons. I have the advantage of still being in school with a music department full of people who would probably be competent enough to help me. Hell, I know the department chair well enough that perhaps he could either direct me to the best person or help me himself . Thanks GPH, acoustic >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> electric. IMO. I looked at tabs once, they confused the shit out of me. I am learning notes/chords right on the neck and reading a little bit of sheet music as well. Playing alto sax for years gives me the head-start of being able to read music without thinking twice about it, but matching it to the notes is a little tricky since my fingers aren't used to it.
  12. Worked, got back home, played guitar, ran. Pretty standard day for me.
  13. Can't believe I missed this. Hope you had an awesome day Danchow .
  14. Very much delayed bump, but I just wanted to share a few shots and some impressions of my first guitar that I purchased this past week: ~~~ I spent nearly two hours at my local Guitar Center the day that I purchased the DX1. Auditioned one Yamaha FG700, two FG730's, a Seagull S6 Entourage, a Martin 000X1, a slightly different custom DX, and the DX1 I ended up with (had to request it from the warehouse in back). Before I went to the store I thought I'd end up with the Seagull. However, the proof is in the pudding, and the S6 had a tone that was just way too warm and relaxed for me. Whatever review I read that had the Seagull as very "spanish-esque" was spot on; the tone did not seem like it be ideal for use with a bunch of different genres. Since I am not sure which sort of music I even want to play yet, the Seagull did not make sense. The Yamaha's were decent in sound, I think the FG700 is probably the better buy at $100-150 less than the 730. The tone was pretty good, but the built quality was very meh. All of the Martins are incredible. I only bothered to play the DX series models because they were the only ones I could afford. They may cost a few hundred more than the Yamaha's, but they feel and play like they cost a thousand more. I was shocked at how good a Martin feels compared to other brands, they are in a totally different league in my opinion. The tone, to me, sounds exactly as an acoustic should. Nothing funky about it, just some warmth and accurate. I really liked the 000X1, but it was $50 more and I was already quite a bit over budget so I decided to go with the more popular model (also a big plus that my guitar was untouched prior to me playing it, the 000X1 they had was on display). That being said, the 000X1 is a very nice guitar and I would recommend that equally to the other DX models even it might be a bit lesser-known right now. So yeah, I spent a lot of money for a first guitar. The way I see it, I am very serious about getting to solid playing level, so I might as well learn and something that sounds and feels wonderful to me as I move forward. Been playing daily, the tone is just perfect on every note and every chord. I'll probably stay loyal to Martin for a long while. PS - I have a Mexican-made DX1. Since it's brand-new, this was impossible to avoid. You have to go back to 5-year old DX models (bare minimum) to find ones that were made here in the States. Honestly I don't really care about this; Martin has every one sent to Pennsylvania for inspection and QC before they are sent to dealers. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.
  15. My case isn't really your standard Dell, at least as far as air cooling goes - My GTS idles around 54-55 C, never loads beyond 62-63. Those temps should be just fine. Before I put any work into the pc, I used to be able to hit over 100C on an oc'd, loaded 7300LE. That feels like a lifetime ago now. I should be fine on the 2x 6 pin, the HX has two modular 6 pin slots. I'll have to go check for the cable, hopefully it came with two.
  16. Turns out my friend has an extra 640GB Black, so I'm gonna pick that one up for $50. He benched the single drive vs. his Samsung Spinpoint 2x 320GB Raid 0 array, and the Black was better in most of the numbers. I was considering setting up a Raid 0 for my OS and games, but I'm just not sure it will be necessary. I guess I could just buy another one later on down the road and mess with it.
  17. Thanks Todd and Fungi . Atm going to sit around for a deal on either the 4870 or the 4890, whichever shows up first will be the one I get. I'll think about the WD Greens, though the Blacks are still ideal. Can't OC the CPU unfortunately, Intel proprietary locks the FSB with no proper way of getting around it iirc. Whenever I get a new CPU, I'll be getting a new mobo and case as well, which is going to amount to a big overhaul. Core i7 and DDR3 are probably in my future, but not anytime soon.
  18. Alrighty, here are the spec's of my Dell that I've had together since the start of college: Mobo - Intel P965 (Dell proprietary bullshit) CPU - C2D E6600 RAM - 2GB G.Skill HK GPU - EVGA 8800GTS 320MB PSU - Corsair HX520 HDD's - 1x WD Caviar 250GB, 1x WD Caviar 500GB ~~~ I'm considering: 1) New GPU. This is complicated for me as I haven't been following either Nvidia nor ATi for at least a year. I know of both the GTX and 4-series, but I don't know where the best value is in either lineup. GTX275 looks good but might just be a bit more than I'm looking for. GTX260 perhaps? $160 is very attractive. Both 4890 and 4870 looked interesting on the red side of things as well. My main use is for Oblivion, which getting a little dated but with my texture mod's has always given my GTS a lot of trouble because of lacking memory. Resolution will be 1680 x 1050 on a 20" wide. No second monitor for now. No need for SLI or XFire, not possible with my board. Also, I bought my HX520 when they were just released, so I never received an 8 pin (6+2) cable for my GPU. Will Corsair still be willing to send me one or two even after a year and a half? If not, where should I look for one? Lastly, I am getting to the point where the E6600 is going to greatly bottleneck me with the GPU? It never seemed to hold back the GTS much, but GPU's just keep getting better and better and have outpaced CPU's by a large margin. 2) Additional HDD's. Probably gonna go with WD Caviar Black 750GB's or 1TB's. If you've got suggestions that go beyond brand loyalty I'd appreciate it. I will say that WD has worked for me 100% thus far. ~~~ Thanks for any/all help .
  19. I'd be in for it; black-anodized cups would make me drool.
  20. If possible, would someone be willing to send me a copy of the schematic for the 1100? I hope to make use of it sometime in the fall .
  21. Here's a belated bday wish to one of the good guys in the hobby. Hope your day was most bestest .
