My opinion of "going balanced" is: don't bother unless you have a source that you really, really like. If the 840C meets that criteria for you, then why not. HD800 benefits from balanced in my experience but as already pointed out, not every sonic "improvement" will necessarily make it sound better to you - the typical sonic attributes I've heard comparing SE vs balanced on headphones in general have been improved clarity in bass (and clarity overall) and faster impulse response, but there's also a sort of soundstage expansion that might not be ideal on the HD800. As for cables I have a more positive opinion of it than say MPI and the only vendors I'd buy from would be Moon Audio, APureSound, or Enigma. My position is cables last - optimize every other part of the system first and then when you have everything where you want it, then do cables. If you're not at that point, then get there.

The amp's name is spelled Sonett. Geez how many people have to keep mis-spelling that when it's right there on the manufacturer's Web site? As for the JH13, it scales up nicely but you don't need an overly nice setup to enjoy them. I routinely enjoy mine directly out of my MP3 player. How about you just use a Pico DAC into the Pico Slim for less money? (Which I tried and sounded pretty good.) Or you could try an Arcam rDac into the Pico Slim if you need more than just USB input. Or the future HeadAmp "Gilmore X2" which was recently announced on HF.

Thanks for the info Pars, I went ahead and tested power without the amp boards and then Left and Right individually. DC voltage readings came out at plus/minus 29.6V on both channels, I'm guessing that's close enough though? Ok, bad news first: I ended up with yet another blown fuse, but just 1 fortunately. The good news is that I was able to isolate where it's coming from. With both of the amp boards disconnected, the amp powered up ok. It's probably a good thing I tested the Left amp board first, as it powered up and stayed on - but the Right amp board did not and the fuse blew almost immediately with it connected instead. So now that I've verified the Right amp board is the cause, what now?

My local dealer told me yesterday they're expecting to get their first shipment in early next week, so I should be getting mine pretty soon.

This ZIP file will be deleted in 30 days. The very last pic in the set is something I noticed while doing a closer inspection, missed it before, thought it might be related.

Nate, I got 2A 250V fuses (slow-blo), same spec as the fuse that was already in the amp. I haven't tried another fuse btw, didn't think that would help anything. I don't know how to disconnect power to the amp boards either, so I can't try that.

Finally got a set of new fuses today and installed one right away once I got home. Unfortunately the new fuse blew almost immediately - I saw the power light turn on for a very brief instant but it went out almost as quickly. I re-opened the amp but nothing looks damaged as far as I can see, and no weird smells either. Sounds like there'll be some troubleshooting to do... Definitely never taking the B22 to a meet again I think.

Following instructions that Nate gave me, I took the fuse out and verified that it was indeed blown. That was easy, will be getting a new fuse soon.

Thanks for the info all, and Nate has given me some good info to work from so I can check the fuse. Will be doing that shortly but for now I've set up the M3 in its place so I can listen to tunes.

So a Nugget B22 that I recently bought from penger died at a local meet yesterday - I walked up to the amp while someone else was listening (more likely trying to listen) and noticed that the amp was off, which seemed odd. The power switch did nothing and re-plugging the cord did nothing either. One day later the amp still doesn't power on so it wasn't temporary either. I verified this amp as working before the meet, and it worked when I set it up at the meet too, as I listened to some music for awhile on it. I hear absolutely no internal noises when depressing the power button and have no idea what caused this and no idea how to fix it either. (Edit: the power button still "clicks" mechanically, it's just that nothing electrical happens.) I opened the amp and nothing looks like anything blew either. So what are my options on getting this amp fixed? Among the amp builders around HC/HF I'm not sure whom to ask either. If anyone could give me some pointers, would really appreciate it.
