Cary 300sei woes

Featured Replies

Took my Cary 300sei out of the garage not heated where it has been  unused for over a year, amp was pretty cold temps in the high 40s.

I should have let it get to room tempature but I didn't Amp turned on got a hum from the transformers I really never noticed before,Input tubes light up but My WE300bs never  light up.

Ideas? I have another set of we300bs ,but I don't want to take a chance installing them. I don't have any cheaper tubes to try.

Open it up and see if there is anything amiss?  I think the tubes are AC heated in the 300sei so they should work unless the transformer is busted.  Edit:  Light up that is.

Ooohhh, hope the amp is ok Tom. It has a special place in my heart since I first heard it 15 years ago.

Maybe have the guy who did the mods on it have a look?

I'm a fan of that amp too. Hope it is something simple.

I just looked at the internal pics I have of the stock 300SEI and the heaters for the 300B's are bad...real bad.  They are just a tap off the transformer, fed through a diode bridge and into the tubes.  Quite possibly the worst way to do this.

Tom I would invite in a cheap pair of 300b tubes while sorting this out as the price on the WE just keep going up and up. Good luck as I really liked your modded Cary

my 300sei went silent years ago - (blew a resistor).  I replaced it - and it blew again - so that was not the issue. -- I have not gotten back to it...  (and you Don't want to see the inside of this thing.. ooph)..

I would give Cary support a call as well - the people I talked to years ago were very nice and helpful (at the time).

good luck.

I have seen the insides it a rats nest for sure. I will open it up when I get the chance.& look  for any visual signs/

a schematic would be helpfull mine is the older 11 watt version.

Or get in contact with Dennis Had directly via his email and see if he can give some pointers on troubleshooting/what is wrong. He did so with a few Cary products that went south that I owned years back.
