  4. Jeff, your query is quite broad. Where do your priorities lie (weight vs. comfort vs. fun toys), what sort of places and conditions are you looking to visit? It all can make a huge difference in gear. I have similar big pack, an Arcteryx Altra 75, but I only use it for winter hikes requiring a lot of gear, or times when I take a full DSLR rig with tripod and full camping gear. I did a 7 day trip in thr Sierra earlier this year out of a 50L REI Flash, which weighs 3.5lb less. And I love my REI Stoke 29 for sub 20lb loads.

  6. Saturday: Hosted a birthday party for our 3 year old. It went great: the kids had fun, weather was good, the cake tasted awesome and for once I bought pretty much exactly the right amount of food. Sunday: Got up early and ran a rather cold (43F) 5k with my pregnant wife. We had our two kids in the running stroller. I ended up wearing a track suit which worked great at keeping me warm though it did look very silly IMHO. The 3 year old then took part in the kids race and then we all had pancakes provided by the organizers. A lot of fun was had by all. In the afternoon I spend 3 hours trimming the bushes in our back yar for the first time in at least 4 years. It was made a lot easier by the electric trimmer but I have some bush that is a spiny ugly mother which still succeeded in giving me a few scratches. I cut one of two of them out and hopefully it will behave better. The 10ft holly bushes in the front are next on my list. All in all a great weekend.

  7. We went out to a local steak/wine bar tonight for dinner. Debbie ordered a 10 oz filet cooked medium. When we got our steaks, hers was pretty blue in the center. Our waitress was very good, offering to replace the steak immediately. Debbie did send it back and they gave her a complete new dinner with the steak cooked correctly. The manager came by our table and let us know they were comping Debbie's steak and all the wine we had consumed. Awesome customer service in our books, and because the waitress was so attentive and apologetic, she got a big tip. So a night that could have been shitty turned out good.
