  1. Perhaps you need more time to adjust to real high fidelity sound. I used to love listening to live 5 piece jazz combos playing trad and dixie. The I'd go home and listen to my setup and look for the cues in the live performances that grabbed me. It certainly helped to lay down what real should sound like. Few people have really conxentrated on what things should sound like. People complain about pianos being too bright in the highs, That's what they sound like in real life. To use an analogy, some think that all sonic scenery should look like a lush Swiss mountain meadow on a bright sunny day. It's not like that in overcast conditions. This idea that just because it sounds good, it's hi-fi is a furphy. Hi-fi means great sounds great, good sounds good and rotten sounds rotten.
  2. Get iBuds....
  3. Happy birthday Marc.
  4. More important, is that a book on saltine bread at the back. I can live without music, but I find I need food to continue my mortal existance on this celestial orb.

  8. Almost as good as mine...... well, to me anyway. John designed my case too.
  9. I'd be betting on the amp. Have you checked the output balance on the offending channel? Try it on both DC and AC voltage. DC voltage to see of the balance is close to zero and, AC voltage to see of there is some parasitic oscillation going on. If you can hear it, the meter should pick it up.
  10. The Starving Student takes a lot of beating. He gets beaten up every day.

  24. If i remember correctly they were the tubes in the eXstatA he designed without the helpful aid proffered by all the more knowleged personnel involved in that project. That was before he decided to build the Liquid series of amps. I still can't get over his decision to have a power supply for the eXstatA that was designed for newbie builders and that didn't have protection to stop the supply going unfunctional if it was powered up without a load. I wonder how many supplies went west while their voltages were being dialed in when the load resistor went OC because the power rating was marginal, or was operated without a load. The few extra components to make the supply able to stand without a load, or uprate the load resistor would have meant more builds in service. The idea of making the build as cheap as possible for newbies was fraught with peril for the intended audience, and probably turned off budding DIYers in the process.
  25. ear, ear... (must be said with a cockney accent).
