  1. Butthole Surfers was outrageous. These guys are teetering on the brink of acid causalities, but they seem to be walking that line just fine. The biggest surprise to me was the professionalism and musicianship. As chaotic as their music is, none of the playing was sloppy or haphazard. The House of Blues in New Orleans is the most miserable venue I've ever been to, but it is also the venue I've seen most shows at. Having said that, when a show is not heavily attended, its not that bad. I was surprised at how many people were there, considering the Butthole Surfers haven't cut a record in a shade under a decade, but still, the crowd wasn't super thick. I hope nobody showed up to hear them play "Pepper", because as far as I could tell the setlist was pure vintage Butthole, but to be fair I have only a passing familiarity with their body of work. They had two projectors pushing all kinds of bizarre shit on the screen behind them, including live shots of themselves and the crowd. The music was straight up acid punk noise, chaotic and hilarious. About 30 seconds into the opener somebody threw a goddamn box of blue glowsticks from the balcony. A glowstick war at a Butthole Surfers concert ensued. I started laughing my ass off at that point, really set the stage for the rest of the show. At one point Gibby Haynes (lead vocalist) bummed a cigarette off somebody in the front row. During the encore break he gave the fan who bummed him a cigarette a Heineken out of their ice chest. I thought that was a classy move. Later a friend asked me how the show was, and I said it was like Jolly Ranchers all night. Sweet, delicious, cherry Jolly Ranchers. Awesome. We were standing behind the soundboard and I copied the setlist from a sheet of paper laying on it: 22 Going on 23 Cowboy Bob 100 Million Graveyard Some Disute 1401 Suicide Florida Gary Floyd 2 part/tornado hey dust devil x-ray Edgar Negro BBQ Pope Goofy's Concern Blind Man Something Who Was In My Room E: Cherub Fast Song Concubine
  2. thanks! it changed natomatically.
  3. hell yeah a disease for my penis! $50 disease from sex.
  4. well that didn't work. experimenting with tapatalk.
  5. The Fall - Bend Sinister "welcome to U.S., 80s/90s"
  6. Going to see Butthole Surfers tonight in New Orleans. Saw Mike Gordon in Bham last weekend. Did I post that already? Anyway it was a great show in a great venue: Workplay Soundstage/Theatre. I didn't even need my earplugs, very balanced mix. Mike was very friendly and hung around the merch table until everyone got all the autographs and weird Mike conversation they wanted. I got a signed LP.
  7. I use an SVS sub with my 22L floorstanders with success. I just keep the crossover all the way down to the lowest setting (40hz methinks) and the gain just below half. it's not perfect (bass is not completely undirectional, i'd need a second sub or less gain to correct this) but it works for me.

    DEXTER

just finished season one, really loved it. now i will exit this thread until the series is over to avoid any spoilers.
  9. Mike Gordon @ Workplay in Birmingham. Great show, he's got a band that can kick a wide variety of interesting jams. I sometimes found the guitarist wanting, but for the most part he could play. Lots of quirky Gordo numbers along with a few choice covers, most noticeably Radiohead's "15 Steps" and Beatles "She Said, She Said". Mike was in a great mood the whole night, smiling and telling the crowd he loved them and whatnot. After the show he went to the merch table and bullshitted with everyone and signed autographs for anyone who wanted one. I picked up the LP of "The Green Sparrow" and had him sign it, which is fun. Its translucent green vinyl and has not really impressed me sonically. My first time at Workplay, its a great small venue with excellent acoustics. I was surprised that I did not need my ear plugs.
  10. yeah we saw it in 3D in the theater. Delightful flick, I love Gaiman. Methinks it's about new novel time for him? Enough with the short story collections. Burning through Dexter Season 1 with the GF. Really enjoying the show. It's my first Showtime original series. Lacks the polish of the HBO stuff, IMO. the sister character (Deborah) is a bit annoying and her actions are often irrational to me. having said that, the GF really likes her character, says you don't see enough characters like her on TV. *shrugs*
  11. avoid the Genesis reissues. Classical is really where it's at for SACD. Check out the Living Stereo or Mercury Living Presence releases if that's your thing. The Dylan SACDs are good, but I haven't listened to mine much because I'm not a big listening guy. Meaning I love Dylan, just don't play him a lot. The Depeche Mode SACDs are awesome. UK only though. 2nd on the Pixies.
  12. latest listens since I don't post in this thread nearly enough: Mike Gordon - The Green Sparrow Death - Individual Thought Patterns David Bowie - Aladdin Sane (RCA) Lou Reed - Transformer (2006 Japan Mini) been having some pretty satisfying music experiences. I'm happy that after many many years of listening Death is starting to click with me.
  13. well hopefully i'll be back with some phish setlists no one cares about if the rumored Cincinnati shows happen.
  14. Little late with this one: Depeche Mode 1 September 2009 Lakewood Amphitheatre Atlanta, GA In Chains Wrong Hole to Feed Walking in My Shoes It's No Good A Question of Time Precious Fly on the Windscreen Jezebel Home Miles Away/The Truth Is Policy of Truth In Your Room I Feel You Enjoy the Silence Never Let Me Down Again Encore: Somebody Stripped Behind the Wheel (extended hard dance version) Encore 2: Personal Jesus Waiting for the Night Awesome show. High energy from the whole band, especially Gahan, who is one of the happiest freaking frontmen I've seen live. My one quibble is he does that thing a lot where he holds the mic out to the crowd to sing the chorus. There were entire songs where he didn't even sing the chorus once. Gore was the real attraction for me. They are both amazing vocalists, and I still consider Gahan to be the best, but it was Gore's singing that really got to me. Truly better to hear it live then to listen to records at home, which means it has only improved with age. I had not been to Lakewood since the last time Phish played. Lakewood is also the place I saw Phish for the first time so it holds special significance. My girlfriend and her friend were given passes to the after show meet and greet by someone on the event staff, so I was able to walk around and kill some time in the venue while they met M. Gore. ) here's a shot of roughly where I was standing when I first saw Phish in 2000. I was 18 years old.
  15. looks like tons of win will ensue. I shoulda come.
  16. war damn eagle. would love to kick some tide ass this year.
  17. thanks for the info Steve! will the vinyl box be in mono?
  18. oh no sir, you misunderstand! I was responding to Asr's above request for popular mainstream metal/industrial releases. I've had all those albums forever.
  19. Highly popular mainstream metal or industrial albums: Slayer - Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven Ministry - Psalms 69 (The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs) NIN - Broken, The Downward Spiral Metallica - all through s/t, skip to Death Magnetic Megadeth - all through Countdown to Extinction Sepultura - all through Chaos A.D. to me "mainstream" industrial ended with The Downward Spiral, and most of the good "mainstream" metal was 80s / 90s. the above is a horrendously incomplete list, am on iPhone. not sure if I consider current contemporary favs mainstream. Opeth, Mastodon, etc.
  20. happy birthday!
  21. sounds nice!

    Perfect songs.

awesome. and you're right, the live version stomps the studio version, which suffers from that "we're all snorting ritalin" issue that you see a lot in studio songs of that era. I'd also add "Fight Test". I dunno about Song #2. Grows to weary to be perfect, IMO. With you on the other two though. Its a masterpiece and Mercury is a god. Agreed. My vote for most perfect Genesis song is always "Firth of Fifth". I can't listen to this song and not give it my absolute full attention.
  23. whenever I ask for monitor recommendations I got room treatment recommendations. Today, if someone put a gun to my head and made me buy monitors, it would be the mini Harbeths, no doubt. I'd keep all my Quad electronics (99 Pre > 909). that new radial driver looks badass, though I've never heard it: out of your price range I guess. glad to be unhelpful! but I'd consider Nate's advice as well. Those $700 Paradigms look great. I have never heard them but have read plenty of positive reviews, and almost bought some myself a while back. If you do a sub eventually, I can recommend the budget SVS, but keep in mind throwing this in your system will pretty much destroy the transportability aspect. The SVS subs are freaking heavy. I have the cylinder sub and it gets attention from everybody that comes into my house. "Nice speakers. What is that? A sub? Thats a sub?!"
  24. 601, pretty sure it's a Green. one of the best cigars I've tried, in my limited experience. also had an Oliva Serie O and Partagas Short this weekend.
