  1. LOL... actually much worse, it would be a huge step up to sound like $40 BB speakers. Thanks for any help or suggestions, I am willing to try anything.
  2. If I can find a CD on online source for a sweep tone I will try that. I doubt that the driver is fried because the speakers sound identically "bad". My experience with a fried driver in the past has been that they sound raspy and most of the music is missing. The woofer and tweeter reproduce the whole range it is just that the music is muted. What I mean by that is veiled, no bass to speak of sounds as if the driver is trying to play through a pillow. No prat, no texture, basically sounds like a cheap boombox. Before the mods the speaker played well at small room listening levels with my test Charlize amp at nine o'clock, after the mods, I had to crank the Charlize to two o'clock to get the same sound level. Insignia is Manufactured in China so the true source of the driver is a mystery. Given that, a data sheet from the manufacturer is a dead end. Danny Richey ran a sweep and posted the chart on the hyperlink above, it's Greek to me though. Bad ears is an option but bad attitude is probably more accurate.
  3. I did that as well one of the first and easiest was to switch speaker terminal connetor from amp. I am trying to post a scan of the schematics as well as a picture of the cross over but having a little trouble. I will try image shack for the CO How do I post a PDF of the schematic? Thanks for your ideas and patcience.
  4. I think the resistor value is too high or the inductor is a bit too robust and not the best choice or I can't read a schematic and messed up the wiring but Danny would have caught that.
  5. Not sure what you mean by this, but I did switch just the tweater connects, then just the woofer then the tweeter and woofer I tried every combo on my Excel matrix that I created to make sure I tried every variation that I could think of, then I waited for the full moon and a glass of Port, same result....... I have a pair speakers I am working with so I kept one speaker as is for A/B'ing with no improvement in the B'ing pair and they still sound equally awful.
  6. Your on! If you mean switching positive and negative connections, I tried that for both the woofer and tweeter with negligible benefits. I even tried voodoo but that didn't help either. So I am defaulting to someone smarter, which in this case is anyone reading this post. :'(
  7. Unfortunately, I have neither but I do have a soldering iron, a screwdriver and a ton of frustration.
  8. About six months ago I got swept up in the Insignia decent speaker for cheap craze and purchased a pair really cheap at Worst Buys with the intention of trying my hand at the Danny Richie Mods. My plan was to replace the mediocre speaker pair in my office with some nice looking and killer sounding moded speakers..........rrriiiiiight! http://www.gr-research.com/insignia.shtm Bottom line, they sound awful, worse than stock. I checked every resistor connection, inductor, and how I ran the connections. Out of desperation I sent the crossovers to Danny who hooked them up and ran a sweep. He found no problems, but they sound awful. I have fifteen hours of painful burn in and there is absolutely no improvement. I hate to throw good money after bad at this point, but at this point we are talking ego. I will not let this debacle end in defeat. Is there anyone out there who knows crossover designs who can take a look at the coaxial driver, inductors, and resistors I am using and find a solution? I will compensate you for your time. Thanks all. Greg
  9. Napkins, both cloth and paper. may have been processed in bleach to make them white and no matter what there are some traces of bleach remaining which will effect the taste of wine strained through them. I know because I have experienced the after taste myself when trying this. Preferable to cloth would be some type of metal strainer or better yet decant the wine into a pitcher and scoop out the cork remnants with a spoon.
  10. Interesting conglomeration, what style of music would you say? Thanks I will give it a try.
  11. I am a big fan of the ECM and MA Records labels. I have found most of the recordings from these labels have great music detail and mixing, especially anything Todd mixes over at MA Records is exceptional in sonic quality. My dilemma is that both labels are very deep in talent and have many CDs available and I am reluctant to just randomly pick CDs without knowing what I am getting. Both labels have an eclectic roster of talent but some of it is just a little bit out there for me at this point and I would rather not buy a CD just to have to wait a while for it to grow on me. Any recommendations? What artists have you purchased and liked?
  12. Agreed. There is nothing worse, in jazz especially, than a cranked up clipping album of music. Some engineers think buyers of CDs believe if it is loud and distorted, it's high end. Sheeze!
  13. A Damascus chisel would be a real nice complement.....
  14. I never in my wildest dreams ever imagined I would say that a hammer was a thing of beauty but .....that is impressive. How does it sound?
  15. I would be really interested in your experience with the single driver build. My journey took a lot longer and exceeded my budget but I am pretty satisfied with the end result. If you get your build ratios correct and place the finished cabinets near the corners of your listening room you will be quite impressed with the lower order bass definition you can achieve. Good luck and please keep me/us posted.
  16. ...those are on my Fostex 166E's I have in a full range BLH arrangement and they fill out the mids and uppers very nicely seemingly adding detail and texture. The Seas have a great reputation though I have not heard them that I am aware of in a full range setting.... I would welcome the opportunity to do so some time.
  17. Voltron, Deepak, Thank you for the comments. For purchasing information contact Boris at: [email protected] Boris is great to deal with, very responsive and knowledgeable. FYI the original price of $720 plus shipping was a mistake which they did not catch until after I had ordered mine. I suspect that they determined pricing in early 2007 before the dollar depreciated against the Euro. Their new stated price is $870. Kind regards, Greg
  18. Excellent impressions Deepak. I wish I could spin some of my music for a comparo. The only experience I have had with the duos were in systems that I feel were not set up properly. Again, what amp was used, the SET one you mentioned earlier I suppose?
  19. I think that is because Eddy Merckyx designed one of the op amps pictured.
  20. I agree with Nate and Boomana on this in every way. I don't know but it appears lately, perhaps because we have somewhat of a reputation for not taking any BS but there seem to be a number of people migrating here to act out. In my opinion it is one thing to have uncensored dialogue on various subjects which I appreciate and value but it is another thing to have juveniles acting out to prove some type of point. That acting out behavior is a waste of bandwith and offers no value to me of any kind.
  21. Well as of this moment, your only choices are Mladenovac, Serbia or Southern California. Equidistant actually to where you are now but not very convenient.
  22. Boris Bhadinov, moose and squirl bahahahaaaa!
