  1. don't worry, I drink a can of wd-40 whenever i start a project like this.
  2. fuck yes! thanks again kevin. I found a rusty on with a 2 1/8 inch base for 25 bucks after shipping. I think I can clean it up, take out the bit and wrap some magnet wire around the post and turn the thing into an electromagnet.
  3. damn, that means that she machined them. Fucking engineers! I thought that it may be some type of step drill bit or reamer.
  4. Kevin, you seem like a guy who's seen a lot of tools in your day. Can you identify the type of drill or boring bit that is used in this video--or if it even a bit at all? 5. I would lik an electromagnet because you can adjust the field strength with out moving the magnet. I did buy a bunch of the largest neodymium magnets I could find on the web just in case my dreams of an electromagnet don't come true. That is a generous offer kevin but I just can't afford to even pick it up let alone the massive DC power supply that it must take.
  6. about a liter of ferrofluid, 300 feet of magnet wire, and ac/dc power supply.
  7. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpBxCnHU8Ao&feature=related]YouTube - Ferrofluid[/ame] 400lb at the contact point just won't be enough I don't believe. magnetic fields dissipate at a rather short distance dramatically. I'll need an an extremely powerful field to be able to lift that much ferrofluid. I just got some money from my school today to experiment with this stuff so I have a little more money than I anticipated. I may be able to buy a serious magnet now. We'll see.
  8. the four inch one is 160 dollars which is way out of what I'm willing to spend. I can build one for for under 25 dollars magnetic wire and all. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my questions though JB.
  9. Ah ok, I need to be able to adjust the current which an amplifier would do well. I could just put a potentiometer between power supply and it. I have a question for you, what type of power supplies would be best?
  10. I'm still on my quest to build a large an powerful electromagnet. I'm wondering if I can put a non oscillating signal in one of the RCA jacks if my old crappy, "don't care if i blow it" amp will amplify the signal. Also how can I put in a non oscillating signal? Would a 1.5 volt battery work?
  11. again i ask, what the fuck is wrong with florida?
  12. HA! you're so right. I really like his almost drunken sounding drumming in the song strawberry fields. It will certainly be a challenge!
  13. it's going to have to be way more powerful than one you'd make with a couple of batteries and some magnetic wire. I'll probably have to find a decent volt dc power converter. I might be able to find an old laptop power supply somewhere. I'd like for somebody to tell me what to do so I don't kill myself by making a mistake.
  14. my GF and I want to build a ferrofluid sculpture. We'll need a pretty damn powerful electromagnet to make it work. The problem is where the hell do we get a powerful but inexpensive electromagnet. I'm hoping that we can build one. Is this something that a total amature can pull off?
  15. I just cited the divine comedy in a paper I wrote today.
  16. not only can you call bullshit with causing trouble with the mods, it's the mods themselves that commonly call bullshit. This is truly a great site if you love audio gear. It's full of assholes but if you're nuts yourself, then it's full of very personable assholes.
  17. I really couldn't tell you why but I really like that picture.
  18. I think it's supposed not to make sense in that dada absurdist way that one either likes or doesn't like.
  19. what the hell is up with you floridians and guns?!
  20. If there's anybody that want's to become the larryminator of AT then you could probably flip the wood ones after they become unavailable for quite a bit more than what you payed for them. You'd have to create a topic of course about how incredible they sound and how it's a shame that you can no longer buy them new.
  21. [ame= - Sound and Salt[/ame] A pretty cool video that shows sound waves by patterns salt makes on flat driver. [ame= - Amazing Liquid[/ame] This one is harder to describe but is also pretty cool.
  22. I grew up in central IL from 76 to 1997. I remember, some time in the late 80's it getting frighteningly cold temperatures. So cold that if you splashed a cup of cold tap water in a high arc it would be frozen or slushy by the time it hit the ground.
  23. is that pic from the fi? That's pretty funny.
  24. I would sport that belt any day though I doubt I could find one that would go around my 34 inch hips.
