  2. This is amusing...I ask about cost little object amps, now I'm going to build a Starving Student...lol Maybe after I get over my new toy syndrome with the speakers I'll be wanting to build a top-flight amp again.
  3. the team was good, no doubt...i just hate them It's one of those things...I've just always disliked them.
  4. i hate the red wings =/
  5. I know...eep! You know how it goes, though...I say I'm going to get rid of the headphone stuff, but can I really?
  6. Active or not, I finally got around to seriously listening to my Quad 12L actives in a subpar setup and came away very impressed. There was a little hardness or metallic edge to some vocals (especially with Wilco), but I'm willing to bet that's due to the sub-par setup at the moment (can't wait to put the Buffalo DAC in the system). I'm now considering selling all the headphone amps/gear and just picking up a set of UE-11's for when I need the isolation or lack of disturbing others.
  7. Thanks for the great reply, Tyll.
  8. Haha, for sure. I've always been pretty fond of that expression (and have managed to let it slip out at inappropriate times, lol).
  9. you will...the buffalo owns my panties
  10. I thought something along those lines may be the case (though I didn't know all the terms used), but are the outputs auto-sensing of load, or is the DAC set to one or the other on power-up, to your knowledge?
  11. I'll take a look at that link soon. Thanks, Jon L. For my intended use, would a simple resistive control work? I want to pull a headphone output straight from the volume control (or should I place the volume control between the Buffalo and the IVY?) Maybe I should use the digital volume control for the Buffalo that the TPA guys are going to be putting together. Man, I feel like I'm not making any sense today...my mind has been melted by Lost.
  12. It is expensive, for sure. I'm planning to place them right in my source (Buffalo -> IVY -> Autoformer, then split the output to pre-outs for my active speakers and a headphone output.
  13. lol, yes, much with the gooderness. my poor wallet, though also, the 24 step unit would have flying leads, and the 15 step would have bare bobbins that I'd solder wire to...so probably better to just go with the 24 step unit, anyway *wallet screams*
  14. I'm thinking about picking up a pair of autoformers from Dave Slagle over at intact audio. I'm trying to decide if 15 3dB steps is enough or if I should spring the extra cash for 24 2dB steps. Any thoughts?
  15. OK, that makes sense. Thanks Pars.
  16. Excuse my ignorance, Filburt. My DIY knowledge isn't up to snuff. Is current steering the same as the current conveyer types? Also, this is something I've been pondering for a couple days. How can the Sabre DAC operate as both voltage out and current out? I think I'm missing something...
  17. Wish I could make it. I didn't really get a chance to get to know anybody at the last one I went to. Have fun guys!
  18. 3 different encounters stick out for me: Roger Waters last year doing all of Dark Side + lots of other stuff. The whole thing was absolutely killer. Sounds of the Underground tour, I think the year was '05. Most of the show was great, but there are a couple moments during that were very striking, especially the couple times when it seemed like the entire mosh pit (too big to be a pit really...it was huge) seemingly went into sync. I remember one moment where there was a pause in the song being played, and the entire pit went still, but there was this anticipation you could feel. It was like time stopped. Then the breakdown started and the entire pit exploded into action all at once. It was beautiful. Last, seeing Remembering Never in this really small club. It was just an incredibly intense experience. Too cool.
  19. Ha, I hooked them up for a few minutes to make sure they worked, and that's it. I've had a severe lack of time lately, and I had no stands (finally got them in today), cables (got those 2 days ago), or room to put them in (should be remedied this weekend). It's actually pretty sick when you take into account how much I spend on sound equipment and how little I actually get the chance to listen.
  20. I actually bought humanflyz 12L's (though I haven't really listened to them yet...hopefully after this weekend everything will be conducive to me setting them up). I was just curious. Thanks for the responses guys
  21. Which is better in a bang-for-buck sense? Actives really appeal to me, but the inner-"audiophool" contests that passive will always be better quality. Thoughts?
  22. I'd love to see that. I've gone back and forth so many times on whether I think the balanced b22 is any different from my 2-channel b22. As it is, today I think the balanced b22 is a little more clear on low-level stuff (cmrr?)
  23. Grawk, did you ever receive this? Just curious ot: Have you ever compared your balanced m3 to a balanced b22? thoughts?
