  1. Elephas, Glad you are having a great time and nice to see that the Qualia fits you well. You might need to order a dynamight for them. Icarium seems to think highly of his rudistor with the Qualia. I agree with you completely that the Qualia sounds amazing and very fine electrostats like especially in details and speed. One of the best quality of the Qualia is the imaging. Probably best imaging out of any headphone I've tried and that was with my stock SDS not the upgraded SDS.
  2. I don't think the mods on my Sony is anything but simple (about 7K worth of modifications - I bought the unit for a fraction of the cost though). I would love to hear some of APL creations though.
  3. Wonder how the Exemplar and Modwright units measure up to APL stuffs.
  4. JP, This thing must sound really sweet. I heard Mulveling's Zana and was mighty impressed. The Zana is probably the best deal in headphone amp right now. Funny how Ray's B-52 is almost four times the price of the Raptor while the HD2 is less than two times the price of the single end Zana Deux.
  5. The W5000's pads are even larger than the L3000's. Not sure if they will fit the A100ti. Purk
  6. I hope you get to check them out one of these days. IMO, the W11JPN is very similar to the W10VTG but with deeper extension, better imagining, and more details. The lacquer finish is also very beautiful and they are super comfortable. They are pretty nice sounding though but I don't think that they are worth the asking price. Honestly, if you have about $1200 to spend on a headphone, and don't mind an open design, I will be taking a hard look at the Grado HP1000.
  7. Will you even take them over the W11JPN? BTW, the earpads and headbands are also new. The earpads are the W1000's not the lambskin of the L3000 or thw W2002. I personally think the W10vtg is a nice sounding headphone and probably more balanced sounding than the Denon D5000, though the Denon might have more resolutions and details.
  8. That was my old pair that I recently sold. In great condition. The seller is a very very nice guy and is having a little bit of financial problem. All he wants is around 600 bucks I think, which isn't too bad.
  9. You probably will need someone to lend you an amp to drive them too. They are the most demanding headphone I've heard. I had to tweak my system around to make them sound at their best, but once they do...they are second only to the HE90, imo.
  10. Dusty, I wish the A950LTD is as nice interm of build quality and craftmanship. What do you think?
  11. If you have the two versions of the R10s side-by-side in a controlled environment for a year, you might agree with my findings. As for Ray's R10, I believe it is the bassier pair. What I can offer you guys is just my experience with them and the lighter bass version is much more difficult to drive and my SDS 6SN7 was not be able to supply enough juice to make them sound their best. I had Tom Hankins over to listen to them in many occasions and we agreed on our finding.

I'm going to try to make it too. I went to the Florida meet in June and it was a lot of fun. I will try to bring my R10 and HE90 to the meet. Maybe a SDS and L3000 too.
  14. I had the the A950LTD and it was definitely closer to the A100Ti than the L3000. It definitely has bigger bass response than the both the A100ti and A1000, while has similar tonality to the L3000, but just not as refined. The bass is not as tight or as extended as the L3000. It is also slightly darker than the L3000.
  15. The bass light R10 is the most difficult to drive headphone I've heard. I had to upgrade my 6SN7 SDS to high voltage to drive the bass light R10 properly.
  16. You should check out a used Modwright Sony 999ES w/ Platinum mods or an Exemplar Denon 2900. These used units can be purchased for less than $1600 USD, which is an excellent bargain. I had the SACDmods Sony SCD-C555ES and I don't think it is as refined as the Exemplar or the Modwright Unit. The Zapfilter has a very powerful and upfront presentation, but not as refined or as liquid sounding as the Modwright and Exemplar units that I've tried.
  17. MarkL, I went through that process before. When I first got my R10, my SDS w/ 6SN7 tubes didn't do a good job at driving them. In fact, my HA2002 was doing a better job driving my R10 than my 6SN7 SDS. I bite the bullet and got the amp upgraded w/ high voltage option to run the 6BL7GT as well getting some tube adapters, and the improvement has been very night and day. I'm now running my SDS with the following tube combo for my R10s: Slyvania 6BL7GTs/GTAs as output and GE 12AY7GT or Tungsol 2C51 as a driver tubes. Markl...I'm sorry to see that you are letting go of your R10. I wish you spend $1800 bucks and check out the Extreme Platinum w/ the R10 before selling them. Regarding the case, the retailed price for the carring case for the R10 is around $450 but Sony no longer has any more in stock. I searched for the case high/low from Sony & partstores.com and didn't find any.
  18. Yeah....plus he probably already made b/w $500 to $1000 for the case. A net profit of around 3k.
  19. Dusty, You need to check out the A900ti. http://bluetin.com/catalog/product_info_products_id-127.html?osCsid=7c04e430efeb471052c750e0d3e7c539
  20. I do have a speaker system, just not in the same level as my headphone rig. Sony TA-E9000ES (process/pre-amp) Sony TA-P9000ES (multi-channel analog pre-amp) Sony TA-N9000ES (5.1 amp) Sony CDP-XA7ES / Pioneer Elite 59Ai w/ modwright mod as source Paradigm Ref. 100 V.3 (fronts) Paradigm Ref C590 V.3 (center) Paradigm Atom (rears)
  21. Tom, I can bring Exemplar Denon along. I'm very curious about your NAD M5 myself so we can trade the player for a few days. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330192329570 These are the tubes that I got for the Denon. The Amperex 7062 pinched-waist is the best tube for the Denon according to Hirsch and Boomana.
  22. Tom, I can buy the HE90 clone and you should check out the Thiel clone. This could be nice 2nd system for you instead of those Magnepan.
  23. The 7.2 is actually better. I just listened to his system couple of days ago. About 3 months ago, we went to the Theil dealer and heard the 3.7 running with the Ayre monoblock and the system sound amazing. But Tom's system just got a whole lot better after his loaner preamp arrived as well as the all the cable upgrades.
  24. Which version of the Theil speakers do you have? I'm a big fan of their top of the line 7.2 (?). Regarding MarkL, I wish he gave a good tube amp a try.
