Better than those other Electrostatics and not hard to drive!

I remember when you could buy'em for half that price... -
Electrically, the 6BZ7 is nowhere close to a 6922 except in gain. Half the transconductance, twice the plate resistance, a bit more gain. Given that the input & output tubes are direct coupled, I wouldn't drop in a 6BZ7 without seeing the full schematics of the amp.

That's the icepick grip, also known as the serial killer grip.

As a health conscious person who does not want to end up with emphysema, lung cancer, or any of the other shitty diseases associated with inhaling toxic carcinogenic smoke, let's just say that I don't smoke. So the answer is nothing. But I do eat magic brownies.

I've had days like that, I fried the PSU on my KGCA when I went to adjust a trimpot and ended up shorting it out when I sneezed at the wrong time. Surprisingly the amp itself survived, but I had to make a run to the surplus store to pick up more PSU parts. Then there was the time I blew up the probes on my multimeter, I was measuring voltages in a rather tight space on my tube amp PSU. I found out the hard way what 500uF at roughly 350V can do when I accidentally crossed the probes while they were both in contact with the caps. The probes were vapourized, and my ears rang and I saw spots for hours. I had to get a new multimeter after that one. I've come to accept that blowing stuff up is a part of DIY.

Happy birthday! Without Tyll, we'd be a lot further behind in the headphone hobby, he's the key that opened up the headphone world.

Yes, she is. Unfortunately, for myself and Dusty Chalk, she's married.

Y'all are just jealous 'cause I actually get out and have fun with hot chicks.

Well, for starters I have to say that I'm against the screen mod, and as far as I can tell I'm the only one. I've made a replacement screen assembly out of sheet aluminum, cardboard, plastic, and various types fabric & foam. I haven't like any of the results. Yes it can be a more open and extended sound in the treble, but I found it did bad things to the overall tonal quality and sometimes the imaging as well. The headphone ends up sounding "whiter" and somewhat "washed out", and ultimately I found this fatiguing. To me it just ain't worth it, the original screen works just fine as far as I'm concerned and strikes the best balance for overall sound.

Well, you can't argue with success, and I've had quite a lot of success with women.

what are your opinions on the super.fi 5 and the denon ah-c700?
aerius replied to MERTON's topic in Headphones
Conclusion IMO, AKG took a wrong turn in its pursuit of "neutrality" and flat frequency response, the K701 sounds like it's been resistored down and way overdamped, giving a dead sound that's lacking in weight, warmth, and dynamics. I find it to be dry and boring, and anything but neutral, real music is not this lifeless and bland. I can't remember who mentioned it, but it's as if AKG sat down and built a headphone such that it wouldn't offend anyone, and came up with a product which is average or mediocre in every respect, it doesn't have a single outstanding or compelling quality which would convince me to forgive its many shortfalls. I can forgive a Grado's small soundstage since it's got a wonderful tone as well as being the most addictively fun headphone I've ever heard, I can forgive my K340's slight midrange colouration & rolled-off highs thanks to its soundstaging, imaging, level of detail, and spooky real female vocals. The HP-1000's analytical sound is offset by its high resolution & precise soundstaging & imaging. I can't say anything like that about the K701. To me the K701 is just another headphone in the crowded $350-500 segment where it faces stiff competition, and that's the level it performs at, it's a Senn 650 level headphone at best. It's not a giant killer, it's not going to match an RS-1, K1000, HP-1000, or anything else in the $700-1000 range. Postscript: This was written some time ago, after further thought I've concluded that the K701 is a flaming piece of shit. This has nothing to do with the OP, but that's besides the point, the fact of the matter is that Merton's a fucking moron, and should go play chicken with speeding freight trains. -
My middle school shop teacher would've flunked me for finishing wood that badly. They also need to replace their tooling since every single Grado cable gets pinched at the Y on the same side in every single headphone.

I'm totally serious, it came down to either flipping a coin or asking the members of Head-case, I decided on the latter since it would be more entertaining. In all seriousness, I'm clearly, I repeat, clearly not being serious, so it puzzles me that there are serious replies, especially considering that this is the Off Topic forum of Head-case, where we usually make a mockery of seriousness.

Well, there's the slight problem of my K340's drivers never coming apart again since I had to epoxy them after making repairs to the solder tabs and voice coil wire connection to the drivers... As for doing the EnABL process, my friend says she ain't doing it again, ever, since she came really close to wrecking her RS-1 while taking them apart and doing the mod, and doesn't see the next time being any easier. Bud Purvine, who owns the patent would probably be the best person since he's done a whole bunch of speakers and headphones.

Might I suggest a vacation in Nevada to enjoy the brothels? If I lived in Quebec, I'd be celebrating my 10th year of legal drinking. It's also the age where women stop aging, and start lying about their age.

Looks like Mike Vick is facing some new allegations....

Latest update, A Michael Vick chew toy for dogs. -
I think both pairs of RS-1's were older ones. They're not the really deep red ones which some people here have, but they're significantly darker than the current production RS-1's. On a deep-reddish scale of 1-10 with 1 being current production and 10 being the really old ones, these would be around an 8 or so.

Applying a pattern to control standing waves and reduce resonance to both the driver and the wooden housing. Also recabled with copper litz wire and driven balanced, along with rounding off some corners and sharp edges in the internal parts. All listening was done with flat pads, as they were the only pads we had.

Part 2 We had 2 RS-1's, a stock one and a modded one which was recabled and treated with the EnABL process to reduce resonance. The stock RS-1, as I learned years ago at my first headphone meet is damn good, and I still think it's the best current production headphone available. There's a pretty good sized gap between a modded & stock RS-1, as I noted in a previous meet thread the modded RS-1 is simply the highest resolution headphone I've ever heard, it does things which I didn't think were possible. The difference which surprised me the most the soundstage, it's a little bit wider than stock but with a lot more depth, and the presentation is slightly less upfront as well. It feels more spacious and natural, there's a lot more room in which sounds can be layered out, and echoes & decays sound a lot more realistic. Cymbals benefit the most from this, in stock form the cymbals tend to get tizzy and overpower things, it kinda sounds like they've run out of space on the soundstage and gone into feedback. The modded pair brings them back under control and allows them to be precisely placed in the soundstage, the tizziness is gone. It's still unmistakably a Grado though, the bass hump is still there and midrange still has that signature Grado sound, the mods don't turn it into an HP-1000 or anything like that. It takes the RS-1 sound and adds a lot more speed & resolution, plus it clears up the highs and deepens the soundstage. It's smoother as well, but I don't know if I can say it has the liquid sound of the PS-1, it's a different kind of sweetness that's hard to describe. An analogy would be to compare say, Sarah Slean and Leslie Feist, they both have a sweet voice yet they don't sound the same, but can at times, and both are awesome in their own way. Compared to my K340, the stock RS-1 still beats it out in handling complex music, it's faster and has better separation especially in the low end. I think the K340 with all those passive diaphragms plus being a closed headphone has too much moving mass & energy storage issues to keep up with the RS-1. It also has better detail & resolution than the K340, but loses out in soundstaging. It can't do the big wrap-around soundstage which I've grown used to on my system, but the imaging seems to be slightly more precise. I'd also like to state for the record that a properly amped RS-1 will absolutely murder any current production AKG, Beyer, or Senn. more later...

Review: Postjack's Mom She screams real good when you stick your cock up her ass. In fact, I haven't heard such good screaming outside of a porn movie. Earplugs are definitely recommended if you want to plug Postjack's mom up the ass.

Mertonisms, or, the world according to Merton, in other words, inane Merton quotes Sorry about your brain, it's almost as bad as Falafel O'Reilly.

The loops of litz wire tweak. This is quite possibly the strangest tweak I've heard of, get loops of wire and attach them to the ground connections of CD players, amps, and speakers. Sure, whatever, someone is on drugs. Then a few weeks ago I had my CD player open to make sure all the mods I'd done were still holding up, and while I had it open I thought, "time to prove someone IS on drugs", so I made a couple wire loops and put them on the RCA output grounds. I can't believe this shit works. I have no idea why, but it does. I've since applied the tweak to my amp and it works there too. It's relatively small difference, but the effects are as claimed by the inventor.
