  1. Clearly, Head-case members are being taken over by the alien pod people.
  2. I'll have to disagree with this part, though rectifier bottles are quieter & smoother sounding than solidstate diodes they can't match the goodness of TV damper diodes in my amp. The TV damper diodes are quieter & have a lower noise floor and the dynamics are also better. As far as I can tell they don't have a sound and that's the way I like it, if I want tubey fat tone I'll do it by using an RCA grey-glass 'SN7 in the amp circuit somewhere. The rectification should stay out of the way IMO, it's there to make quiet DC and get it to the rest of the amp.

No doubt, but I find it's more comforting and usually faster to do it by hand.

It's pretty sad that about the only writing I do these days is when I fill out my income tax return and when I draw schematics. The computer pretty much does everything else.
  5. The easy solution is to go with 12SN7's which are still a fair bit cheaper than the 6V version. A 25V version of the 6SN7 also exists but as far as I know the only variant available is the RCA grey glass one. There's also 12 & 25V versions of the 6080 (6081 & 6082) which as far as I know is a drop in substitute for the 6AS7, and usually a lot cheaper too.
  6. I haven't heard the M3 yet, but I've heard the PPA, warmish and PPA go together like Richard Simmons and a homophobe. Which is to say the PPA is on the cool and somewhat dry and analytical side. I didn't like it with my Grado 225's, it's more for Senn 650's.
  7. A Sarah McLachlan poster. The GF is experiencing mixed emotions...

Get a Benchmade 690, it'll look great next to the RS-1.
  9. I wouldn't even know what the price on those things is these days, I got mine for just over half that price a few years back. I think that's around the going price, but check with jpak or someone who's bought them in the last year or so for the scoop.
  10. I hope someone makes a better K340 for cheap, but I honestly doubt it'll even happen. I look at the way companies are voicing their headphones these days, and it tends towards blandness instead of having character like the classic 'phones. The musical fun just ain't there these days, and I don't know if it'll come back.
  11. One thousand of the above, filled with West Texas Intermediate crude oil.

Pretty smooth highs, but the midrange & bass is pretty thick and syrupy, and dark. Oil will indeed become quite costly in the near future, read up on Peak Oil and then head over to The Oil Drum with their wealth of technical articles, then be prepared to be seriously depressed and angered. Step 1: Find about $75k-80k in spare change, depending on the current price of oil Step 2: Open an account at ICF Holdings or other such securities company which lets you trade oil & gasoline futures Step 3: Research the shit out of Peak Oil, oil reserves & production, and politics in oil producing & consuming countries Step 4: Wednesday is the magic day, that's when the DOE oil inventory report comes out each week at 10:30am Step 5: Make a shitload of money Step 6: Remember to set aside a bunch of money to cover the capital gains taxes Moving back on topic, the GS-1000 just didn't agree with me. I'm addicted to the RS-1 midrange and the GS-1000 unfortunately doesn't have it.

Given that it's in the form of an oil futures contract, and the way oil prices have been going up this year, it basically sounds like $$$CHA-CHING!!$$$

I have been on a buying spree, I currently own an olympic-sized swimming pool's worth of crude oil.

Is it just me or is everyone here going on a major buying spree lately?
  16. Putting some heavy books on top of them to smoosh them down.
  17. That's deep. I'll have to go meditate on that or something...
  18. Clearly, we are all victims of a grand conspiracy. Either that or we're all suffering a mass delusion.
  19. We had punch? I don't remember drinking punch, but I vaguely recall drinking beer. Or maybe that was another time.
  20. I guess the W100 I held in my hands and had on my head was not a W100...
  21. Actually I'd say this latest one from Machina Dynamica takes the cake. http://www.machinadynamica.com/machina60.htm Just read it, seriously.
  22. Nope, the largest I've seen around here is either 1" or 1.5" diameter.
  23. Go to Canadian Tire or Home Depot. They should have some large diameter clear vinyl (I think) tubing. Grab some of that, grab some foam pipe insulation to go around it, then get some PVC or ABS pipe that fits over the foam. Glue it all together & paint it and you'll have one of those swanky cable doo-hickeys.
  24. I is reading some threads on head-fi where ignorant fanboys are getting owned. Someone just compared an amp to mung, that is probably the funniest thing I've read all day.
  25. I seem *cough cough* to have come down with a *cough cough* cold *cough* I'm going home now...
