    LS3/5a

Yeah, they're pretty sweet. They were getting out of my price range though. At the time I think they were about 1,200 UK pounds.
  5. Ah, cool. I'll dig around because nobody has decided on a standard cheap off the shelf foster phone to use, we've been using whatever comes our way, usually cheap crap off ebay. I'll look to see what would make a likely candidate and go through the process. Don was asking about doing a project like this but again, no standard, easily available shell. Ideally something from the likes of Radio shack would be good. Gimme some looking time and I'll investigate.

  6. I think my head just imploded trying to make sense of that....
  7. Holy shit, my birthdays were never that cool. Have a good one knuckles me old fruit.
  8. Yeah, baffles are rock maple and profiled like the original in that they are dished to the outside an the pads snug into the curve. The driver hole is gently rounded into the driver. They do still swivel as I put the bolt through the cap screw hole, added a washer and screwed a nut on it. It's not ideal but it works as long as you superglue the nut in place. I still have to cap the ends. Man, how'd they get so hairy?!? I blame the cats
  9. These are closed back with small vent and it uses all the original parts except the shell. The housing needs to be rock solid and weighty to let the drivers sing. And they do! Circumaural comfort and awesome sound.
  10. Current production, used all the standard parts except the cups which suck ass and kill all their potential. I love these guys :ian:
  11. Steve, get the T50RP and make some new cups for it NOW!! It's a perfect complement for the K1K srsly good.
  12. Scratch all that, the T50RP (driver) is the fucking tits! Stuck in a new housing that doesn't cripple the driver these are the best phones I've ever heard.
  13. Hi Chu. No pictures of the UR 20, it turned out to be a lost cause as the housing was a bit too flimsy to work well and keep any bass. There are millions, well, a lot of SFI modding pics in the HF ortho thread. Are you planning on making a set and is there anything specific you need to know as it's a little bugger to get right and we've gone through dozens of permutations to date with varying levels of success/failure. I'll be happy to answer any questions yo have.

  14. Yeah, the bass is nice but not a full as I'd prefer.
  15. Yep, orthos are more fun than you can shake a stick at. I'm now in the process of fully molesting the new RP... I knew I couldn't last long without really going at it so I went out and got some nice Kingwood and hacked the crap out of it

I wish They were all lovely little speakers but the were all gone by the mid 80s when I got some Naim speakers, which I then gave to a friend in the mid 90s when I moved to the US. Now I have some big ole Vandersteens hooked up to the TV.

No, I bought a set years ago in the late 70s when they were new. I was looking for some really nice compact speakers and they were just perfect. Lovely design and beautifully smooth. I only had one set of speaker wires anyway so the base fitting wasn't a problem. It was hooked up to a nice Sansui amp and TT. More stylin than the 3/5 and better bass but keeps that same overall quality Beeb sound. I later upgraded to the Tangent TM3 (long defunct) then the Celestion SL6. They alll shared that same smooth mid/high. Creamy, buttery goodness.
  18. I've only ever heard them SE so can't say. Nice phones though.
  19. That's because I have a pinhead, the bigger the head the more retarded the phones look.
  20. Now Duggeh, you know perfectly well that a DAP with SRD 7Mk2 with the O2 is a perfectly reasonable portable setup.... as long as your generator is on wheels
  21. Am I the only who is happy running mine off a DAP? They sound perfectly fine and still better than just about any other phone I plug into it as long as you don't need high volume. Anyway, It's a good phone to have no matter how dumb you look wearing them
  22. Ack, no! Do not awaken the beast from the deep, nothing good can come of it......
  23. Interesting read indeedy, It has to be said, I always liked maggies, apogees, logans, quads etc. So it's nice seeing the planars getting good blind results.

    LS3/5a

The LS3/5a was very nice but I decided to go with the JR 149 which was Jim Rogers souped up 3/5a, same drivers, better cabinet and crossover. Rogers was one of the original licensees as you know and he worked hard to improve on the original. I loved those speakers. I don't know which variant would cost more these days, both are still highly desirable. check it out... http://www.jr149.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/JR149%20History-3.htm
  25. Acubes is getting damn expensive for a lot of things like pads.
