  1. I had nothing to do with the gift (sorry -- would if I could), but I'm still really glad that you're back! And thank you for your service!
  2. EDIT: First of all, yeezh. I got an XtremeMac TuffWrap for my iPod, which I'm very happy with. (a) The silicone actually makes it harder to drop, due to its no-slip surface; ( and it provides a modicum of cushioning when I do anyway. I have no idea how that would translate to an iPhone/iTouch.
  3. Chinese: Starting out with egg rolls, then it's a choice of chicken with black bean sauce, or with hot garlic sauce (and then the remaining will be eaten as leftovers tomorrow).
  4. Yeah, Julian Bream is nice, but classical guitars have too much "bloom" for my tastes, I much prefer the new style acoustic guitars that don't have those stupid resonances that are so hard to listen to. I don't know of too many classical guitarists that record with those, though, it's mostly the like of Fripp & co. (League of Crafty Guitarists, etc.) and other contemporary music makers. A couple more: Funk #49 -- Joe Walsh in the James Gang the ultra-bright acoustic guitars on "Life's Been Good" -- Joe Walsh solo the similar ultra-bright guitars on "Fire On High" -- ELO the one-two eargasm of "Witch Hunt" & "Vital Signs" on Rush's Moving Pictures
  5. You live in a fantasy world. And I only know this because I'm the previous tenant.
  6. We have a really classy local place called "Total Beverage", and there are recommendations throughout the store -- I really liked this style, because I was looking for Vouvrays, and no-one was available to help me, so I just grabbed one of the employee's personal favorites, and was quite pleased. I also think Fray is worth trying, if you want something organic.
  7. While seeing the new Bond film this weekend, I was seriously impressed with Jack White's guitar tone on the song during the opening credits. Does he have other songs that have seriously delicious guitar tones? I like everything from ridiculously processed (Isley Brothers -- Who's That Lady; Shotgun Messiah's Violent New Breed; Nine Inch Nails; Landmind-era Ministry; etc.) to some nice subtle compression with maybe a little bit of tube distortion (Tommy Bolin's Savannah Woman; Al di Meola's Ritmo de la Noche; Eric Johnson) to some nice dirty spittle-flying guitar tones (ELO's Ma Ma Ma Belle; godhead's Fall Away) to ...uh, I don't know what to call it -- let's just call it David Gilmour -- his Pigs (Three Different Ones), Dogs, Echoes, Shine On You Crazy Diamond -- heck, even Rob Dickinson pulled off some great guitar tones on Handsome. And yes, of course shoegazer -- Black Metallic, Just for a Day, Loveless. So what are some of Jack White's songs with great guitar tones, and what are some of your favorites? I wanna hear.
  8. Fuck no.

    LS3/5a

I love LS3/5a, and fully intend to voice a speaker I am going to make after it. My fantasy is to be able to get that same midrange magic with more extension in both frequency extremes and more dynamic range by using multiple drivers. Of course, I've only heard a true LS3/5a once, but it was enough to convince me that it was what I thought it was -- what I owned was Spendor's 8 ohm version, the S3/5a, an earlier version of the S3/5 that they're selling now. It was quite special, and made Absolute Sounds' Golden Ear awards several years back (2000-ish). But I have to admit -- I miss my Spendors a lot less, what with the Quad 12L's. They're definitely in the same family of sound.
  10. No, it's because the O))) part is a visual representation of the name. It's like having a picture of a...Britney Spears after the words "Britney Spears" -- you don't call her BritneySpearsBritneySpears then, do you? No, you just look at the picture. And then you move on.
  11. Conspicuous consumption -- he's being a patriotic American and stimulating the economy.
  12. The only LCD that I've been even remotely happy with is the Sharp Aquos. And I haven't heard the most positive things about the Panasonic, so am leaning towards the Samsung plasma, myself -- probably the 50A550. But I'm pretty much an LCD snob -- I hate most LCD's that I've seen. But even in the same line of stores (Belmont TV, a local chain), I've only seen them properly set up in one of them (the Laurel store). And I've been disappointed by the picture at Best Buy, too. The advice I've heard is, if you have complete control over how dark you can make the room (room darkening shades, or shutters, or something), then go plasma; otherwise go LCD. Oh, and if you're going to go LCD, look at response time (faster == better) and frequency (60 Hz is adequate, 120Hz would be even better, although IMHO unnecessary).
  13. Ump-bay. Considering purchasing ER-4s's, must know if these are the same/better. I've seen new er-4p's for not much more, albeit (a) on sale, and ( the 149 price on the hf5's are retail, but don't see them for less (new product, etc.). Although I probably won't be buying anything, so this is just window shopping. The "cobalt" and "ruby" options are pretty.
  14. Oh, well, kudos, then. Of course, I'm a city/suburban/exurban kid, so I go for station wagons, hatchbacks, and -- were I a true family man -- a minivan. But I guess with all your offroading out in the sticks, you need an SUV. (And yes, I've been to the sticks, so I know that I'm not kidding -- road repair is a joke in WV as well.)
  15. I really like that pattern.
  16. So I guess I should keep my comment about environment friendly vehicle to myself?
  17. Must...download...ASAP... I loved showing people that invisible dragon.
  18. Did Zoe Keating open for her there? What kind of music was it (as compared to Dresden Dolls)?
  19. apple care?
  20. DT770 Koss Pro 4AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAFONZIEAAAAAAAAAAA (Haven't heard the Koss for myself, but can speak for the DT770 -- tanks.)
  21. cavalry 1tb (I ran out of space again)
  22. MF A3.2, definitely. Or spring the extra 750 or so and get the A308. Whichever one you get, though, make sure it comes with the remote. I wonder how much the A1 FBP goes for? Or you could look around for the last X-PRE (v8?).
  23. I see a tripod -- maybe he/she just wants his/her picture taken.
  24. Western Digital quietly intros WD TV HD Media Player - Engadget So...who's going to be the first to try this and tell me how the internal DAC is? I want the same thing except with a digital audio out (will also help with the multi-channel situation, like ripped DTS tracks), and component and/or S-video. Or should I go iPod/iTransport (Wadia)? Or should I go laptop/external DAC?
