  1. as a matter of fact, I do have another cable I can try. I'll try the other cable, then I'll try the restore, then it's off to the apple store I go. I bought it as a refurb from apple.com -- isn't there a warranty?

    True Blood

I love this show. It is following the books fairly closely, so if you're watching it expecting something akin to Buffy, or a vampire show, or an action show with a lot of sex and violence, then you'll be disappointed. It's pretty much about a hick town and the people in it, and I really like that about it. There's also a lot of little things about the show that I like, and I think I'm going to have to go back and watch Six Feet Under at least once. The episode where at the beginning they're playing some Tuvan throat singing, and it cuts off abruptly and the episode starts with them arguing, and somewhere in the middle of the argument she mentions crazy Chinese gargling, and he corrects her, and you realize that the soundtrack at the beginning of the show is what they were listening to in the car, and I just laughed. Because I get that kind of thing a lot, myself.

  4. I have to unplug and reattach my iPod to the Mac several times before it registers in iTunes -- is this a common problem, is there a fix for it, or should I send it back for a replacement? I'm worried about killing the battery. The Mac is at 10.5.5, iTunes is at 8.0.1 (12), and iPod is at 1.1.2 Mac. (And no, I don't plug it and unplug it willy-nilly -- I give it a chance to register every time. One time it even caused iTunes to stop responding, and I had to reboot the computer.)
  5. Yay, you finally got your amp!
  6. That's actually a rather famous photochop.

  9. List of people on this forum who have received a Christmas gift from Dusty: ... ...or even a card: ... ...how about a thought? ... PS The atheist/Christmas comment was based on a news story I heard on the way in to work this morning about an ad that they're going to start putting on the local subway ("Metro"). I believe it's something like this.
  10. (used car advertiser voice) "You want to talk about visceral impact? I've got your visceral impact right (smacks self in chest) here. And in case the 'big one' comes, it doubles as a defibrillator."
  11. You crack me up.
  12. I'm an atheist, anyway. PS Here was my original response to this thread, which, in hindsight, would have been more...uh...something:
  13. Well, it's hard to listen to music if you're dead, being the reasoning here. Sound thinking.
  14. Okay, you are off the "gets me" list.
  15. not so good So, since a lot of us are old fogeys, I figured at least one of us would care.
  16. That's just wrong. You realize that says more about your ignorance of linux than it does about linux, right?
  17. You know, I almost did something like that. :-D
  18. I like the way you think. "What do you mean, North isn't that way? It is now!"
  19. Well, except that it's no longer his latest DIY project...
  20. I have a stupid question about Damascus steel -- real Damascus steel is the way it is because it's folded and refolded during the curing process -- which means that unlike most black knives, the portions that are black are actually black, rather than painted black. So here's the (extremely hypothetical) question -- could there be a way to get black metal? Truly black metal?

  22. How about hollowing out an extremely dense and sturdy material until it's the right weight (the barn-parsec joke comes to mind)? Then you can do all sorts of funky things like put a wheel in it to give it gyroscopic effect, or an extremely off-center center-of-mass to give it a hopping effect, or an off-center butterfly weight, to give it a wobble, etc. Modular!

    Fringe

I fucking hated the fake science. I mean, if , how come she didn't know ? And the altered states stuff was just too much. I did like what they did with the location titles, although I was having flashbacks to Superbowls. I do heart Anna Torv, also, and John Noble was amazing -- he didn't "play" loose cannon, he just played his character, which happened to be a loose cannon. So -- wish I could like it more, but the pseudo-science was a big turn-off.
  24. The comics were great -- Ben Templesmith really outdid himself. I love what he did with color.
  25. FYI -- I've been getting good results using a one-two combination of Mac-the-Ripper for getting it off the DVD, and DVD Audio Extractor for getting the audio out of the .VOB files. I've been having some problems, and the one guy has been very responsive. And yes, it's from DVD's I own -- the bonus DVD's from the Depeche Mode sets, which is nice, because it's coming from a higher quality source material (48kHz and...uh, 24 bits, I think). But more importantly, all those bonus tracks I now have access to on my iPod. Converts to .wav, mp3, ogg and FLAC, amongst other options. DVD Audio Extractor also works directly with DVD's, although I haven't used it that way myself, yet.
