  1. In the last 3 hrs: first, organic tortilla chips with home made salsa then, beef tenderloin, grilled on wood charcoal, black and blue then, grilled maryland sweet corn, cut when I ordered it, then soaked in water, and grilled then, blueberry and peach cobbler with ice cream and whipped cream
  2. I haven't found anyone with an outlaw 990 complaining about hdmi->dvi. What are the problems you're referring to?
  3. The outlaw does DVI switching, and you can get HDMI->DVI cables.
  4. (and it's the 970 and 990 that they're selling now)
  5. You should give magnepans a shot for the speakers, and if you don't plan on using sacd/dvda, outlaw's got some awesome deals on their pre/pro separates right now (outlawaudio.com)
  6. I mostly go live, too. Studio is so they have it on record, live is where it lives. Jazz is all about the improv.
  7. Fusion is one thing I've never managed to find any soul in. It's cool and all, but eh, it doesn't get me places where I get to feel warm and fuzzy.
  8. That's almost always true of good jazz. If it's not live, the magic is harder to find.
  9. The getz does jobim sacd I have is pretty spectacular.
  10. Hoffman redid getz eh? Hrm. CD or just vinyl?
  11. If he could pull a clean master of the paris shows, I'd be happy.
  12. that said, if he did pet sounds and smile, I'd probably buy a scout
  13. that even if I don't hear what he's mastered onto whatever limited vinyl pressing, there's still plenty of awesome music for me to listen to, and that most of what I've seen that he's done is people I'm not that into anyway.
  14. If I'm missing details on the recordings I'm listening to, I honestly don't care. When I listen critically, I'm pleased with the stuff I expect to be pleased by. The rest of the time, I listen to music because it's part of my life. With the money I'm willing to spend on audio, which is 10:1 music:gear, I'm more than happy with the quality I get. Listening to my recordings of gov't mule that I recorded myself with good mics, at 44/16, I am brought immediately back to the show. When I listen to rips from well recorded cds, I can place instruments, hear micro details, etc. So I'm satisfied. And honestly, I'd rather listen to a shitty recording of charlie parker, than anything Steve Hoffman has mastered anyway, so to me, it's not the details that matter, it's the magic in the music.
  15. Time is the most precious thing in my life. If I have to search out recordings on vinyl, I'm just not gonna hear them. If I have to fiddle with something to listen to it, I'm not going to. If I have to decide in advance what I'm gonna listen to, it's not gonna happen. I'm trying to figure out how to get my dvds on the fileserver, so I can put them away too. Somethign that requires less intervention on my part is key, not more.
  16. Anyway, I'm not invested in this debate, I really don't give a shit if people keep buying records. It's good that people are making good masters. But people are making good cds too. And I basically have no interest in anything that is on vinyl and never got released on cd.
  17. A couple thousand bucks is not chump change. And even if records were maintenance free, you still have to stop every 25 minutes to flip them, have to store them, etc. I'll stick to my recordings on my file server. But you can keep repeating that records have better dynamic range, but just because some music on cd is poorly mastered doesn't mean that the medium is worse.
  18. And any new record has a digital step in between. But even something as simple as pachelbel's canon or the 1812 overture can't be captured accurately on vinyl. Just doesn't work. Even my 20 yr old cd of 1812 has better dynamics than vinyl is capable of capturing.
  19. The flip side is that vinyl can never have the dynamic range that digital can have, even cd. And after just a couple of plays, you start to get clicks and pops that are far more annoying than overcompressed pop music. But I mostly buy cds from the likes of chesky, or I'm buying cds that sound the way they're supposed to sound. And you have to spend a fortune in turntables, cartridges, cleaners, vibration supression, media storage. It's all just not worth it. Listen to live music recorded by friends with good gear digitally.
  20. Have your dad pay and it's free to you
  21. The W2002s are pretty nice looking, but I'm gonna have to go for the custom grado buttholes ftw
