What a game! If Neuer did not play sweeper, Germany would have lost that game. Definitely the man of the match IMO. Schurrle's goal was just incredible but if the pass was not behind him, my guess is the Algerian goalkeeper would have stopped it. Ozil's goal was pretty nice too and he needed that to build his confidence back up. Mertesacker absolutely sucked, not only slow but totally oblivious to what was happening in the game and Gotze looked like he was playing for Algeria given who he was passing to in the first half. Algeria played their hearts out and absolutely made a great showing. They played Germany much better than anyone else in the tournament.

I agree totally, except about the not watching religiously part

I have to agree that the handball call was pretty marginal at best. I actually like that referee, he is one of my favorites in the premier league, but he was just off his game today, way too much stoppage of play. I especially liked the yellow card in the second half where the Chilean player hurtles into the Brazilian defender (who was actually moving away from the Chilean) and then throws himself on the ground. Yeah that should be a yellow card on the Brazilian defender. Nevertheless, Brazil was really lucky. They had so many chances to take shots in the last ten minutes and nobody wanted to take the shot! WTF Brazil? I think Brazil is going to have a real hard time against Colombia, their defense looked superb and their two goals were things of beauty.

A 1-0 loss to Germany is not a bad result. The USA played well and had opportunities. The goal scored by Mueller was not due to a US mistake but was simply a perfect shot. I think this was actually the best game we played in the tournament. Oh, and somebody please tell Uruguay to STFU and stop whining.

I agree with this 100%. The USA is playing well as a team and they just need to keep bringing the game to their opponents. That is what they did wrong in the last 10 minutes of the game.

I still love it. Ronaldo showed why he is the player of the year, even when hurt. Futbol at its best. The USA looks good and I just have this feeling that Jurgen Klinsman knows how to play Germany.

Central and South American teams have improved drastically in the past 8 years and it is really showing in this World Cup. Costa Rica is the real deal. Congrat. France was really impressive and beat up on my Swiss team (Karen and I agreed on 3 of 4 semi finalists, I chose Switzerland for my 4th and she had France). France just blew them away with the pace of their play. Now watching Honduras and Ecuador in a motel room in Louisville, KY drinking screw top white wine. This is living.

England looked good on offense but their defense looked unsure. Suarez is an awesome player, too bad he's a headcase.

I think Antonio is right and Spain is at the end of a cycle. But that also means new players coming up to play the style of futbol pioneered by Spain. I am optimistic that the Spanish national team will be back in winning style soon. That being said, Chile played a very good game and deserve a lot of the credit for the win. The team I was most impressed with in today's matches was Australia. They played the Netherlands tough and had a real chance to end the game in a draw. Their tenacity and determination were impressive. No bludgers or wallies on that team.

Viva Mexico! Viva Ochoa! That was some supreme goal keeping, I think he just helped his free agency.

What an awesome opening game for the USA! All you Jurgen Klinsman doubters (yes that means you Alexi LolAss) can just STFU! And Germany looks really impressive considering Portugal is no scrub team.
