  1. Octobass!
  2. Where did you find a screw long enough for both, and I assume no hum or anything?
  3. I experienced the same thing in mainland China awhile back. On the first day some guy was way, way up in my space on the train/public transport so I gave him a small shove and stared him down like a massive douche. After a couple days of more close encounters I realized they don't really have the same sense of personal space. To add to the thread, I went to Thomas Sweet in Georgetown
  4. Best thing to do with the Marantz sound-wise is sell them and use that money to buy a Stax SR-5NB or Gamma or something. You could probably even get some Lambda variant if you wait patiently enough. If they have sentimental value, it is what it is. Most of those Elegas/Napolexen look very similar to various Stax models. The NSA is clearly a SR-X clone. Those big, bulky cups in the early Elegas are probably taken from dynamic headphones they previously made. Superex made the same mistake and also corrected it in later models.
  5. That's why I never bother buying NOS headphones... first thing I do when I get them is open them up and see what makes them tick and sometimes to fix them so that they tick like they're supposed to. Prices definitely keep going up, but you should be able to find one without an adapter/energizer for cheap, and just rewire them for Stax. Do you actually know anyone who owns a SE1000? Only pic I've seen is straight from Pioneer's website. The Pioneer SE100 was introduced in 1971 so if these are indeed all clones they probably came out a couple years later, so mid 1970s
  6. Cool, I always wanted to own a Pioneer SE100. Wonder why so many different companies sold them... seems kind of like Fostex/Foster do these days, OEMing drivers everywhere. Also strange that the drivers are from an entirely different company but use the same 6 pin Stax plug, albeit wired differently. What's the diameter of these drivers? I still want to do a swaparoo with some SR3 drivers if I'm going to put the Gamma Pro drivers in the SR3. They look potentially big enough to swap in your pics
  7. Apparently they've been closing a bunch of stores every year for years, and just closed the very first K mart store. Sad
  8. Welp, I'll figure out what to do with them when I open them up.... They look almost identical to these http://www.head-fi.org/t/355709/k-mart-electrostatic-headphones K Mart needs to start selling electrostatic headphones again, it will definitely save them from bankruptcy
  9. Another American made (sort of) electrostat, the Teledyne ph305. Most likely a Stax electret driver inside. No doubt the ph305 was made after Teledyne bought Acoustic Research in 1967, but not sure how much later. I really hope the stax electret drivers are the same size as SR3 drivers...
  10. I love that about Schnabel, because it was one example of many of his uncompromising musicality. He had a stronger forward drive and sense of pulse than anyone, even Richter. Probably overdoes it a bit in the onslaught that is his Hammerklavier, though Anyone who wants to delve a bit into his methods should check out on youtube The Teaching of Artur Schnabel with Eunice Norton.
  11. On the opposite side of the spectrum, some performers like Glenn Gould were/are avid proponents of studio editing and getting heavily involved with the process. Bit of a funny dichotomy to his inability to stop humming and gesturing during recording. He even fashioned his entire public persona from this same mentality, with many alter-egos and especially in his "interviews" which were all pre-coordinated and more like performance art. He was also a hyponchondriac with no real feeling for temperature (probable fibromyalgia), who took a ton of meds for problems that didn't really exist. What is real is what you perceive to be real, I guess is the takeaway.
  12. I'm sure most people back then, including Phil, thought he'd be doing OK with the Knicks right now Magic already made his first move in the same day. Lou Williams to the Rockets for a first round pick and Corey Brewer. While the first round pick is the right idea, Corey's contract next year is actually slightly bigger than Lou's and it's definitely going to be a very late first round pick. I can't help but think part of the rationale was to give a nice little present to the Warriors in the post season this year, especially because Jerry West doesn't want to come back.
  13. Wow, that's a slight gap there And that quote epitomizes my life! Are you planning on crossing the other two items off the bucket list?
  14. Yes I am well aware hehe, those crazy Italians and their handmade bespoke instruments. Man, what I wouldn't give to be able to play Schubert impromptus and Chopin nocturnes on a whim. Glad you're still playing!
  15. Cool! Did you buy it from him originally? And have you ever tried a Fazioli? I "played" on a Yamaha G2 from age 2 but didn't get very far with it before changing instruments... one of the big regrets I have is not sticking with it.
  16. Okay that's pretty funny along with all the roasts of magic's old tweets That said, this is pretty accurate: http://www.latimes.com/sports/lakers/la-sp-lakers-buss-transactions-20170221-story.html Not sure whether to cry or to cry harder
  17. Certainly can't get worse than 17 wins in a season he apparently started working with D'Angelo so hopefully some of his Magic will rub off. Lakeshow is back!
  18. http://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/lakers-fire-gm-promote-magic-johnson-to-president-of-basketball-operations/ Too damn lit AF
  19. I just hope there is no page in his book in which he states 6-10kHz is low treble. ......... but at what frequencies? There's no such thing as a perfectly matched two channel setup, and one that is perfectly matched 1dB apart at every frequency is also very unlikely. Clearly something poorly matched slipped through the cracks at Focal QC. He should have nixed the review when he found the poor driver matching. Would you be happy if someone did a review of the SR-X Plus in which he definitively stated his opinions, when the build in question or tubes were faulty?
  20. I'm definitely inclined to agree with you, but on top of all that other stuff I just read that he calls the 6-10kHz range "low treble." That implies 10-20kHz is mid treble and 20-40kHz is upper treble. That, or he doesn't quite understand logarithms. Hopefully he just got his intern to write this whole blog for him while he did some substantial mastering work.
  21. A lot of suspect stuff in that review... first the whole Amb amp and Audeze amp sounding exactly the same and then the Utopia drivers 1dB off without stating which frequencies they are 1dB off. If you can clearly hear the stereo image shifted to one side, get a different pair of headphones or at least run a frequency sweep of both channels..... Also opens with stating as a fact that his speaker setup is the best in the world in a perfectly treated room and then mentions EQ. WAT
  22. If you just need an extension cable, there are still 6 pin to 5 pin vintage ones floating around. I used to have a few just because they came with the SRD7 boxes I bought, for whatever reason. They are not low capacitance so will change the sound a bit IIRC Would love to have normal bias cables to replace the cloth cables on the vintage stuff, and of course for the odd experiment/frankenphone. And some pro bias ones so I don't have to cut up an extension cable Edit: I also really need some vintage arc assemblies because those things are so fragile with the thin plastic. If anyone can point me to a person or place to buy some that'd be great
  23. What is the conversion to miniliters?
  24. Do you know where/how we can buy parts, especially vintage parts, other than flying to Japan? Those pics of Stax factory tours show they have boxes of parts for pretty much every headphone they ever made.
  25. That's a very interesting angle to sit at while listening to speakers
