Sherlock
Brett was the quintessential Holmes, I grew up watching that series and have fond memories. But I also enjoy the heck out of Cumberbatch's Holmes and don't think that there's a need to disparage one in support of the other.

Cool Kickstarter/Indiegogo Campaigns
To me, at best, it screams unnecessarily complex. At worst I think Steve's probably got it right and it'll be $1M of funding wasted.

Nice Dan. I did the commute back and forth to work today. The afternoon was supposed to be hot but actually wasn't too bad. Both trips felt good.

Watches
I prefer the Omega band by a large margin. Specifically what I don't like about the Hirsch is what appears to be a large yellow reveal on the side of the strap. Too much for an accent, in my book.

Use 9DW-1-YEB9E to get $40 off (each) Michelin Pro4 Service Course tires at Steep and Cheap. I just grabbed two @25mm and the total with shipping was $67. Pretty timely since my existing tires are shagged and cracking. In other news I made it out for a good 24miler yesterday and was surprised to feel half-decent and not be terribly slow considering how little I've ridden this year.

Post what you're watching
I watched the first episode the other night and thought it was really good.

Top Gear
From where I sit I think they went out in pretty good order. The last episode in particular had me in stitches. I'm hopeful, but doubtful, that the three of them will get together elsewhere to do something. Right now, it's like an athlete retiring way too soon...

Can't say that I've tried an SSD with the touch but it might be worth it. I'm just not sure if you can set it up without network access..

The Rpi solution requires a network, based on some quick reading, so no-go there. The Transporter, which I lusted after for years, also is streaming only so while I wish it would work, it doesn't. Basically if someone just made a Transporter/Touch or similar that could actually deal with having a 2TB drive hanging off the back that would do it. Sadly, the Touch gets pissed with drives that big and kept stopping/buffering mid-song.

Squeezebox Alternative or Chasing the Pegacorn
You know, it doesn't even really need the ripping functionality. That's just a nice to have. Part of the issue is that I've basically a) hated every iPod dock I've ever used and b ) don't want an iPod Touch for this duty with it's limited HD capacity. If they still made the Classic I'd probably buy one. If they basically took your average USB portable HD and just strapped a display on it it'd work too.

I looked at that one last night, Todd. Great minds... And ironically enough, the eventual plan is to have a vinyl rig in the office.

ecp audio
I had to the chance to hear this (and its larger cousin) recently and Doug's work continues to impress.

Squeezebox Alternative or Chasing the Pegacorn
At a bare minimum I'd have to get a dedicated permit for something like an iPad, not to mention a Laptop or PC looking thingy. Hence me wanting to have it look as much like a CD player or home stereo component as possible.

Squeezebox Alternative or Chasing the Pegacorn
I didn't say it couldn't have network connectivity just that it can't require it for day to day usage. There is no public network at my office and that's where I want to use this.

Squeezebox Alternative or Chasing the Pegacorn
Yeah, I really don't a laptop and unfortunately don't have the time to figure out how to custom build a box with a touch screen, etc. But I don't mind something that I have to control with a smartphone in order for it to be more useful. A used Olive 04HD might suit the bill if I can find a decent one at a fair price.

That's actually the Sony that I was looking at yesterday. Issue #1 is the puny HD (500GB) which can be overcome with an external, Issue #2 is the ~$1000 price tag, Issue #3 is I don't need or want the built-in speaker amps. I know I'm after a product that evidently nobody else wants (hence no one making them) but jebus I'd hoped to find something for about half what I'm seeing...

Squeezebox Alternative or Chasing the Pegacorn
So what I'm after isn't truly a squeezebox alternative but that's as close a description as I can find. Probably a better comparison is to the Sony HAP1ZS but that's way out of my league. In essence what I'm looking for is a music player with a HD inside that I can rip or transfer content to, has an intelligent and usable interface that doesn't require an external monitor, does not require a network connection to function, and doesn't cost $2k. Perhaps even better put is what I really want is an iPod that's wall powered, with a larger display and larger HD. A decent internal DAC would be a bonus. I don't want to just use a laptop. I don't want to use an iPad. I don't want to use an iPod. Thoughts, suggestions and entertaining profanity are welcome.
